    We both read this book many years ago. It's been good to re-visit the methods raised in the book. Thank You

      You're very welcome! It is a book we both read and referred back to a lot when we were teachers as it is a real reminder of how and why we and the kids behave in certain ways 😊

    This is an amazing book, I’m not a great reader , however I listen to audio books, as I find I take the information in better, and this book is amazing, absolutely fascinating and has made me realise and understand myself much better, I really enjoy watching and listening to your self care and mindset vlogs, much appreciated, thanks Richard

      Thanks for your kind words Gee- glad you enjoyed the book. I think for me it was also how the information in the book helped me understand my inner voice and how I needed to be a bit kinder to myself with that inner voice.
      Many thanks again🙏

    A great review of a book that I have read in the past. Time to revisit it again. 🙏 Richard for the prompt. It’s also a great audiobook for the walkers out there. 🚶

    Great book review Richard. I’ve been a major fan of Prof Steve Peter’s for a few years now. His books and workshops have massively helped me understand how I and others tick 👍

      Thanks for this- unfortunately I didn't get to hear him live as a speaker in all my events over the years. Guess it's a bit late for that now that I have jumped off the treadmill😂
      He's a pretty inspirational bloke👍

    Thanks for recording this Richard its an excellent summary and really helpful. I am a fan of his work and he has written other books which are equally interesting and also offer very practical steps to improve mental wellbeing. As an early retiree and a VW camper owner, my wife and I love your channel.

    Great video Richard. It always amazes me how primitive our brains are compared to how advanced we are as a society and technologically!

      Thanks Ron...no matter how technology moves on, this part of the brain is going to stay with us. It explains a lot in modern society and strangely brings some comfort when looking at how some people choose to act.
      Thanks for the comment. Have a great day👍

    I went on loads of courses in my previous career and loads of people kept mentioning it. I eventually bought and read it. It makes so much sense and I still refer back to it when situations happen. It just sits there in my subconscious mind!

      So true- it almost needs to be kept behind glass with a "break in case of emergencies" label😂 It's strange how we all have these books that we keep coming back to. I do feel that this one is a timeless one that always offers more support and guidance upon re-reading.
      Thanks for the comment Gerard. 🙏

    Thanks for another fantastic and informative video Richard. What I took from this was to build on my daily morning and evening journaling by adding in a weekly review and reflection and what I can take into the coming days and weeks.

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  11 дней назад +1

      Thanks Steve. I think that the review of the week and looking ahead to the new week is an area that is often neglected in daily journaling. It's amazing what I have forgotten at the end of the week when I look back over my daily thoughts.
      Glad you enjoyed the video. Have a great day👍

It's great when you read a book and think ".......would love this book". I am a bit of a geek for passing books onto people- the feeling it invokes is so lovely.

    Hi Richard, I first heard about this years ago whilst driving to work. It was on the Chris Evans radio show. I'm also a fan of Guy Martin, who in his books, refers to the chimp as "Steve". Giving it a name I suppose makes it more personal. But I always refer to Steve the chimp when I come across what I think is irrational behaviour, which could include saying things you don't actually mean (fortunately, not me), it's just an impulsive reaction to something you feel you can't control.

    Very nice video on the topic! Evolutionary psychology is interesting indeed! If you haven't read it, I can also recommend "The Compassionate Mind" by another British psychologist. Also based on the understanding of how our mind has developed during evolution but in the context of how we can use that to better understand and be compassionate both towards our own faults and sufferings, as well as others. Probably one of the most influential books I have read so far.

      Thanks for this Bjorn- I am absolutely up for book recommendations as this sounds a really good one for me. That inner voice we all have is a tough one to understand at times. Anything that helps me understand better is good by me.
      Thanks again. 🙏

      @@earlyretirementwanderlust You are welcome! I guess you might have read Sapiens as well? Not so much self development but a great (if simplified) overview of the human development from this point of view.
      I'm 45 and left work, perhaps for good, 3 years ago. The FIRE movement has obviously been a big interest of mine but stumbled upon your channel just recently. I find your summaries of experiences and reflections on early retirement both very helpful and very down to earth. Thank you both!

    Would you strongly recommend for those in teaching ?

    • @earlyretirementwanderlust
      @earlyretirementwanderlust  11 дней назад +2

      Yep Ian- absolutely! Not only does it help us explain why some young people choose the behaviours that they do, it also helps them understand their emotional responses and gives a common language that we can all use in schools to discuss these things without the need for anyone to feel that it is directed at them. It really depersonalises the discussion which makes it much more effect. Plus it is a valuable life skill that we need to learn...it just took me until my 40's to find it😂
      Thanks for the question👍

      Thanks for this tip Clare- my first foray into self help writings came via Robin Sharma...the monk who sold his Ferrari and the associated additional volumes. I will need to revisit his work, because you have reminded me how much I loved his thinking. Have you heard some of his podcasts? He speaks how he writes- really calm and deeply inspirational if you like his stuff.
      Have a great day👍

      Thanks Rich. Always good to be reminded of the need for self compassion. The ' Be Perfect ' drive is strong in so many of us which matches beautifully with the 'beat yourself up' drive!
