Agreed, the OLED viewfinder and its features (live focus peaking & digital zoom for focus checking, all without leaving the viewfinder), are incredible. In my opinion, the viewfinder and manual focus aides of the a77/a99 line are the future that needs to happen in digital cameras. The a7 series did not feature anywhere near as useful technology here, things were decreased significantly. If the viewfinder and manual focus tech of the a77/a99 series becomes the norm, it would be a very good thing. Its just absolutely incredible to use. I've never enjoyed manual shooting more! I sold my a77 b/c of image quality, but the future is bright with the arrival of this. If I could get Canon 5D color profiles out of an a99 II, it would basically be perfect.

i have been waiting a review of sony a99 II for a long time. No one seems to make one.. And then Kay came and made one. It was the last person i would expect to make a review of a99 II. Weird times that we live!
At least, maybe the f/3.5 continuous autofocus is fixable with a firmware update if enough reviewers complain about it?
I'll be waiting this feature to 2012, i have a99 and i can not take video least f/3.5 i don't know why, that's stupid

Minolta had produced five different versions of Minolta AF Apo Tele 300mm f/2.8 G lens and later Sony another two version. There are seven α-mount versions of the original Minolta AF Apo Tele 300mm f/2.8 G in 1985.
It can be found in eBay between 700-1500€ depending on the version and condition.

The C-AF limitation was in every SLT camera so far, incl. the e-mount when converted to an SLT via LA-EA2 or 4.
The phase-AF can't work in closed aperture so thats why they limit the control for you to it.

I feel like Kai is a bit more relaxed and himself in these videos rather than Drtv. He doesnt need to fanboy canon or nikon anymore
SLT technology limits aperture setting in video mode. This is the case with all Sony SLT cameras which have maximum aperture settings of f/3.5 when shooting video with auto focus. The same is true for the LA-EA4 adaptor for using A mount glass on an E mount camera. The LA-EA4 is basically the AF module from the Sony A57 which uses SLT technology.
I was HOPING that Sony would have created a work around, that is, the ability to AF using the imaging sensor AF the same as all their E mount mirrorless cameras with "mirror lock up" to avoid the light loss.
Oh well; I guess that is the price you pay when you try to take a camera with outstanding autofocus for stills and turn it a video camera too.

Went to Norway to shoot the aurora borealis in march last year.
brought my 5d mark 3 and 2 batteries, a girl on the tour brought her new a7r mk2 and used 5 batteries on that night! 21.30 to 24.00!!
Someone once said to me that the continuous auto focus at f3.5 in video is a limitation imposed by the DSLT design. It sounds like rubbish to me, BUT if all of the Sonyt DSLT cameras have that same issue, then perhaps there is something in it. I know it annoys me on my A77ii, but all of the other features make up for it. Nice to hear Kai liked it!
next time please do something else other than a go kart track. we have seen it so many times it gets quite boring

I use all manual lenses , Nikkor AIS or zeiss CP. I don't use auto focus, I would love this for fashion & landscapes

Why don't you try using A Mode to set the aperture to f3.5 with C-AF? And try keeping it at the same aperture, this would easily be the 80D killer for vlogging.
Between the camera and that gorgeous 300mm I'm gunna need to sell a kidney..

My A77II also suffers from the Max Aperture of f3.5 on Continuous AF Video, and considering that I think what Sony did was take off-the-shelf AF systems and combine them (SLT from the A77II and On-Sensor PDAF of A7RII), I'm not at all surprised that the A99II is limited as well. Also, when A-Mount glass (via LA-EA4 adapter) is used on my A7II, Continuous AF is limited to f3.5 there as well. So I think it may be a limitation of A-Mount lenses or Sony's SLT AF system, which is a shame really.
Hopefully Sony will put out a Firmware update that allows Continuous-AF using the Sensor PDAF, even if it's not very functional. It seems silly to exclude that function from such a high end body. Great video Kai.

what Kai not say... the down side to a fixed SLT mirror is your photos are 1/3ed more noisy

Should be using manual focus for video anyway.
It's pretty clear sony flubbed the AF in video mode. But the video seemed to have hinged a lot on that one flaw as if one mistake keeps it from being better than the competition or even the a7rii which all have more compromises and there own flubs. Watching this video it's like you get the sense that for Sony to put out a good A-Mount camera, it really must be the perfect camera otherwise it's a regret. It's not the same goalposts given to E-mount or canon.

You've got flippy screen, USB charging, SLog2 video, pdaf for video, evf, better wi-fi connectivity, great choice of cheap lenses, ibis and a lot more.
My wish for a99III is to have silent electronic shooting like a9, 4k 60p video and without f-stops limitations and of course a touchscreen!

the a mount has probably the best potential for video. the focus sensor also works in video mode, potential for still mode grade video af

Looks like a decent camera for photography. But as we've seen on the pro-tog cheap camera videos that Kai made, it depends on the person behind the camera rather then the camera itself. I see the fast shutter speed and AF making it very useful for sports/nature photography. Video mode looks like it would be good for very controlled environments only (indoor, on a tripod, with decent lighting etc). If the main focus for people is video then for that price range maybe wait got the GH5 to come out. Save some cash or use the left over money to buy more glass.
Lack of full AF in manual mode has always been a problem with Sony SLTs for some reason....
Did you run test for A99II over-heating when shooting 4K video? Sony told me it should run 30 minutes before overheating. I get about 12 minutes and then it gets progressively worse after shutting down to cool off. I got it just over a month ago but they're trying everything to get out of fixing it... I'm suppose to turn off stabilization, tilt the viewer up so the back gets more air, turn off the viewer, or basically turn off all the function you need for shooting video.
So the A-Mount cameras fix nearly everything that's wrong with the mirrorless?

Got a pentax xg1 because I wanted a cheap camera... continuous AF is a nightmare.
Really considering this as a sports stills/video workhorse. I currently use a Nikon D7000 + 70-200 and 300mm prime for motorsport and I'm looking for an upgrade for 4K capability. The only thing that puts me off is the lack of A mount lenses and doubts on its future, but MAN am I tempted to get one of these!

This video got much better once Paul John Bayfield joined in. He actually explained what we were looking at. This sequence should have been up front. I know Kai can do it he did it before at digitalrev. The opening sequence was crap.

There still limitation to the cont AF on video it seems.
On the a99 mark 1 or the DSLT before it, cont AF only works with the minimum aperture of f/3.5 (even on lenses with bigger aperture).

You can fix the changing shutter in video on Alphas easily because they obey AEL in video. You just use your ND filter to set shutter at the start (typically 1/50s), then hit AEL, then record. You then have fixed shutter with full AF. The limit to f3.5 for AF is a pain though; you have to go to MF to shoot wider.
Thats not really an issue in practice though, as most video shooters would limit AF to preroll only, and shoot MF for main shots.

Après une rafale, cela peut monopoliser l'appareil pendant de précieuses et longues secondes.
est ce que ça veut dire après une rafale l'apn reste HS , on ne peut prendre aucune photo durant le temps d'écriture sur la carte ?? c'est handicapant pour les photos sports
When you were doing the a77 (original) review with digitalrev tv, you did a little experiment where you flipped the mirror and took the same shot as with mirror on, and there was a visible difference of about half a stop, and more importantly, white balance. how would this a99 II fare if you did the same?

As I said Mike,, "As much as I have always liked Kai and what he produces for us ...". It's just that when he is talking about Squarespace, he just seems like he's really non-interested in what he's saying. But, yes, I thoroughly agree with you in that he has to make a living and get money from somewhere to produce his content. I just hope he can find another form of revenue soon though.
P.S. I use Squarespace myself and it is a fine product.
One thing that bugs me about the a77/a99/a99II reviews is that no one ever brought up the power of manual focus via the OLED viewfinder (I believe the tech I'm mentioning is the same across models). When I owned my a77, I was able to confidently shoot in manual focus exclusively. I simply didn't use autofocus, for video or stills, manual was that powerful. I'd never experience anything like it, to me, it was the true evolution from film to digital in terms of experience. The deal is this, I could zoom (digital) into the frame to preview my focus in real time, adjust focus, then zoom back out and take the shot faster than the already fast autofocus could lock focus. Thats a BIG DEAL, and considering that this quick zoom feature can also be used while recording for quick adjustments, in combination with incredible focus peaking, and it becomes a total manual mode monster. I agree its dumb not to include autofocus in manual mode, but the manual modes of this camera line are so incredible its frustrating that they get glossed over. I've been waiting patiently for the a99 to drop price and now it seems the time has come to get serious, its one flaw is low noise shooting, but the experience of using this line in manual mode is so profound its easily worth this setback.
