- The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.

Jagged Little Pill, the Broadway musical based on Alanis Morissette’s 1995 album of the same name, reopens Thursday night after a 19-month hiatus due to COVID. The cast assembled at the D’Angelico Guitars showroom in Manhattan to record this Tiny Desk (home) concert, finally able to celebrate their long-awaited return to the stage.
Lauren Patten kicks off the set with “Hand In My Pocket.” She won a Tony for her portrayal of Jo and spent two years developing the role. Diablo Cody, known for writing the movie Juno, also won a Tony for best book. She was able to adapt the iconic songs for the zeitgeist, covering topics ranging from substance abuse, sexual identity, adoption, sexual assault and more. The show received the most Tony nominations of the season with a total of 15.
As cast member Heidi Blickenstaff (Mary Jane) explains, the show is “about an American family in crisis, and I think a lot of people can relate to that.” She sings “Uninvited,” which has been reimagined to express her character’s struggle with opiate addiction.
The song “Predator” wasn’t on the original album, but was co-written by Morissette and composer Michael Farrell just for this production. Its haunting melody depicting the emotional scars associated with sexual assault is emotionally engaging, both on stage and in this Tiny Desk performance.
It comes as no surprise that the show ends with the unapologetically optimistic “You Learn.” It’s hard not to be optimistic watching these talented Broadway performers, seeing how gleeful they are doing what they love -- especially after waiting nearly two years for the ultimate privilege of performing in front of a live audience again.
If you need substance abuse treatment and referral information, call the National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357). You can reach the National Sexual Assault Hotline 24/7: 1-800-656-4673

Everyone sounds incredible. I was lucky enough to see Heidi this last week. Her voice is amazing - uninvited live with the choreography had me in tears.
Heidi is absolutely AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL 😍 ❤❤❤
That dancer who was the "other" MJ was absolutely amazing. Ilicited such STRONG emotions! And I'm not even into dance like that!
What an amazing Tiny Desk. People aren’t taking enough about how amazing these artists are. Especially portraying such vulnerable content. This is what makes me feel so blessed to be a part of this industry! We are healing with art, it’s so beautiful.
Set List Timestamps:
Hand In My Pocket 0:04
Uninvited 4:32
Predator 8:25
You Learn 14:10
With or without a mic, Derek Klena is giving it all and that’s why I love him
How beautiful is it that we get to celebrate Alanis through Broadway. Incredible!
For anyone wondering, the lyrics are changed for some of them because this is the musical cast. (Ex: Uninvited is adapted for a character struggling with addiction)
The fact that people aren't reading the caption and complaining. 🤦🏾♂️ Ugh.... LoL
@@whereisthemusic1999 ikr
@@whereisthemusic1999 You know cuz people read captions on Tiny Desk videos... Gtfoh
Alanis' Jagged Little Pill album was the first CD I bought that wasn't a musical... and now it is a musical. :D The loop is looped. ;)
AHAHAHA
You tried
God, they're so theatre. I love it
English please.
And yet all mimic Alanis style of singing.
@@kiereluurs1243 He said God, they’re all theatre. I love it.
Surprised nobody's talking about the drummer. He's phenomenal!
Dito
Damien is a beast!!!
At the ART the drummer was the band lead
We know drummers are talking about the Drummer. :)
Just saw this show on tour last night and was a little bummed that all the drumming was either dubbed in or done off-stage.
THIS WAS ALL SO INCREDIBLE!!! But like ESPECIALLY the siren notes at 10:35 those were beautiful!!
Right! Great little details and beautiful voices!
Okay I don't mind any opportunity to hear Alanis' music, but can we have the real Alanis do Tiny Desk, please? Please, please? :)
🙋🏾♂️🙋🏾♂️I third this!!
Yeees!
As long as Uninvited is part of it!
I second that!!!
Yes!
This is the cast that i just saw 11/13 and they were incredible. Heidi Blickenstaff and Kathryn Gallagher especially blew me away.
All I can say is WOW WOW WOW. THEY ARE BOTH FANTASTIC!!!
All the singers are AMAZING. IM going to see the musical in Toronto on November the 18th, I can’t wait. Wow wow wow is all I can say. ❤❤❤
I wished Heidi sang "Smiling", it's one of the new songs Alanis wrote for the show. All arrangements are by Pulitzer and Tony-winning composer Tom Kitt (Next to Normal, Head Over Heels, Almost Famous, Freaky Friday).
we need a tiny desk by fiona apple
Yes! I would love to see Fiona on NPR 😊.
Lolol. Fiona Apple turned me into a man. No joke, I was 14 when the criminal video came out and my whole life changed. I remember plain as day thinking "omg girls will do that? It's on now". Lolol. :-)
But only songs from first two albums
Yes please!
PLEAAAASE
Loving Lauren Patten´s voice!
WOW!! what beautiful voices! its so good to see alanis's songs being sung SO harmonically and in SYNC! love seeing other interpretations of the songs it's quite wonderful seeing different spins put on her songs....refreshing! I LOVE ALANIS OF COURSE SHE IS AMAZING!! AND ALL CREDIT GOES TO ALANIS....im sure she would have enjoyed these renditions and had some fun listening in just like i did. WELL DONE TO THIS GROUP!!
Heidi’s vocals are insane
Oh how I wish I was there! Gracias Tiny Desk for bringing us this amazing group of artists! WOW👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🙏🏼
Came for the name stayed for the great songs & good voices. So it’s a broadway show that sounds like it has a meaningful story & they changed a few words - sheesh NBD. It’s great to see that Alanas’ music is on Broadway, how cool is that! Hope it tours in Canada at some point.
Can't stop watching/listening to these incredible performers.😃
I'm the same i replayed it over a few times and it gave me joy and i believe it was also what it was all about was bringing some love and joy in these crazy times we're all experiencing....wonderful
@@MargretMWathey I agree 100%. It's very uplifting! 😀
Wow!! Gorgeous voices with all their emotions poured in 🤩
Seeing this live is priceless telling you from personal experience
.....tiny desk does it again, simply phenomenal......take this show on the road ( retorical ).......

@@harleyquinn3589 That’s not irony.
Saw it twice in 2 weeks. A MUST SEE!!!!
They are really good and I think they just won a Grammy for this album. Congrats!! This was wonderful!

Amazing! And well done navigating the microphone choreography on that last one! Can't wait to see this show in Sydney this December!
I'm travelling from Melbourne to Sydney in December to see it. Now I find it's coming to Melbourne in January! Oh well .... I guess I'll just have to see it again here!!😄

omg i remember i was just crying to this before c19, love that they continued the project despite everything
OMFG I had no idea they did a tiny desk concert. I LOVE this show.
I loved this play! Loved how they showed different social topics.
y'all put derek klena on tiny desk and had him sit off to the side and sing backup
I have GOT to hear Heidi sing "Forgiven". It's my favorite number in the musical and on the original JLP album. She has such raw power in her voice and I would love to hear more from her!
Saw it yesterday and can confirm the Heidi’s forgiven is absolutely out of this world
@maddie s same I saw it a week ago hedi forgivin was great she was amzing
You guys are so lucky!! I'm all the way down here in Georgia so I unfortunately don't have a lot of opportunities to go to Broadway :(
@@ocsmichaelanthony I live far away too but I got to go for the first time ever it was absolutely amazing and life-changing! I hope you will get a chance soon to get down there!
Heidi’s out on the tour. Just saw her last week. She’s so excellent. Go see her if she comes near you!
Saw this band play in an outdoor theater in Richmond last fall. So much energy and really enjoyed it!!
I just saw the tour and Heidi was amazing! Also think it’s cool that Derek’s brother Dillon plays Nick now!
Beautiful! Now we want Alanis in Tiny Desk ❤️
alanis has already been in tiny desk and as usual she was AMAZING!
I just saw this show on Broadway today and God... it was AMAZING!!!!!

Thank you Tiny Desk ! 😉💋😎🖤🔥🎶🤘
Outstanding!
Alanis is sitting in the right-hand corner of the room in the dark looking at her watch while drinking a WhiteClaw.
That drummer though!
Hello
The cast is so wonderful and friendly.😀
So this musical is pretty amazing!
Wow that first song was awesome!
Wow that second song was just as good! Love it

OMG this is incredible!
you learn is soooo awesome
These songs brought back many memories
for sure . Some good and some sad. Thanks for helping me go there again.✌
Love it!
These are the moments I wish I'd live in New York just to be able to see this live and in person. Amazing job everyone!
Yes!!!!
Oh my god I love this! Never heard of the theater show but when they all start vibing at the jump in “You Learn” my theater nerd roots started dancing right along with them. 🤣
i just had a fight with my parents over a past hiccup. for 18 years have been brought up with the idea that I am not meant to make mistakes,I should forsee errors in my decision and always heed their advise. "stay on the safe side" but as I mentioned I had a past hiccup that Im still trying to heal from (them too) hearing "you learn" rlly helped me tonight reminding me that yes, I did make a mistake (as all young kids do) but at least I learned, and I don't have to beat myself anymore like my parents are.
I love Lauren Patton.
Amazônia Alanis!🌱🌿
Wasn't able to see this cast but I am seeing it in Toronto is a couple of weeks can't wait.
The dream team!
Yes. That little pill was rather jagged and hard to swallow. Just though you oo, you oo, you oo, oughta know!
Lauren Patten is so unbelievably talented and attractive omfg
I thought it was actually alanis doing this and got so excited for a sec
Would see that show!!
me ha encantado , bravo
WOW!
Linda homenagem a Alanis!!!👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🌹
Você precisa assistir esse musical inteiro, é maravilhoso
An amazing album.
Would love the real Alanis on some time.
What a voice o_O
Impresionante.
Glorious
Mierda! Que chevere! Lo disfrute de principio a fin!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️
This was beautiful. Anyone comparing it to Alanis is completely missing the point.
Lol literally not one comment I've read is comparing it to Alanis. Her loyal JLpill-poppers know full well that she was 100% entirely involved in the process of writing, creating and producing this amazing show. Sadly, the only negativi-tea being served here seems to be from the insecure-fan staff.
@@harleyquinn3589 lol, then you need to read a little bit more cause there are tons of comments comparing this (unfavorably) to Alanis. Here is one:
"Well, it's been "broadwaymusicalized" hasn't it? Arrangements. Harmonies. Phrasing and rhythm. And sometimes I really like that treatment. But, not here. What it takes out is vital and what it adds in is unnecessary. But it did send me back to Alanis' original and also compel me to look up Lauren Patten as she has a striking voice."
Dumdum.
Doing covers is ALWAYS a risk…
It's interesting - I really loved this Tiny Desk performance, but I've been thinking about the TD performances of "Hadestown" and "The Band's Visit," and after each of those I thought, "I really need to see this SHOW" - and I don't get a sense of the PLAY of "Jagged" from this. And I wonder if it's only because these are existing songs, and in this Tiny Desk concert (and they CALL it that), it's just covers of Alanis' songs. If I was in NYC, this would absolutely be on my list of things to see, but to me, this doesn't have the same impact as other casts showing off their music.
Well this is a jukebox musical. So it’s very different than when you’re working with songs written to outline and propel the storyline.
This is a show written around an existing project. I think their choice to perform it as such makes a lot of sense because of the music as well.
@@viniciusb8863 Oh, I certainly understand that about jukebox musicals - but I did see the number they did on the Tony Awards and got the sense that "JLP" was more than just a series of cover songs (unlike the impression I got that night from "Tina"), so I was hoping this TDC would express a little more of the fact that it's a PLAY - although, now that I write this, I have NO idea how they would have done that. But again, I really liked this.
@Vinícius B actually i heard an interview with Alanis where she said that they chose songs based on the direction the writing was taking. they would write something in the story and she would say "i have a song for that!" :) i thought that was really interesting! also i believe "Predator" was written for the show.
@@Memo2Self i really liked that with Hadestown they gave a bit of context before each song, i think it would've been nice if they did that here!
