2 Track Railway Crossing To Be No Train Horn Zone & Railroad Crossing Abandonment 2019! Ohio Trains

  • Shocking Development! Busy railroad crossing being converted to no train horn zone! Railroad crossing to be abandoned and pedestrian railroad crossing to be relocated next to the main crossing. Fences will be installed along the CSX main line and the crossing will be quad style crossing gates. Signs will also say no train horn zone. The Albion Avenue railroad crossing will close as part of this project. CSX owns this line and Norfolk Southern shares it. It is primarily directional running tracks with most trains going north while a nearby NS line runs mostly south bound trains. This is Glendale, Ohio which is a small city just north of Cincinnati. Amtrak also uses this line. 8-28-17 is when Glendale Village Council approved the ordinance to create the quiet zone. I made a video back then about this after I talked to the mayor. Railfans are not happy about this at all. Photography will be ruined with the fences and of course, what is a train without a horn? I will still eat at Cock N Bull restaurant on the 2nd floor balcony at my favorite table next to the tracks but will the railfans still flock to this location? This video was filmed June 3, 2019 and I included all the trains that I saw that day except for one. The last day for train horns is January 10, 2020. Thanks for watching! We had a sub division near me that built right next to a busy railroad. The locals wanted a no horn zone. The railroad calculated the cost, and advised the folks it would be done, as soon as the folks coughed up the money. For some reason, they are no longer complaining.

      What cost? All the engineer has to do is not blow the horn. We're one of the very few countries in the world which still have trains blasting horns at every intersection. It's well past time to end this nuisance.

      I have to mute out the (annoying) train horns, with an equalizer, so my wife (who goes to bed early) won't be disturbed by the (annoying) rain horns; I don't watch train videos to hear (annoying) train horns, I watch them to see American rains, as I can't afford to travel to the US, much as I would love to; my wife and son would not.. We live a little distance away from 2 grade crossings and that's enough!

    Flagstaff, AZ has a major BNSF trunk line running through it. Train horns were a major annoyance. They put a no horn program in place in 2009 making life a little more pleasant. Two crossings out of the downtown area have horns right at the crossings that are highly audible to traffic but the sound doesn't travel for miles.

    I don't really like quiet zones but I will railfan them from time to time. We have a quiet zone here in Bakersfield CA on the busy BNSF Mojave Sub. The quiet zone extends from the BNSF Bakersfield yard to Kern Jct where it joins the UP Mojave Sub and reverts back to a horn zone. I go railfan the L St and N St railroad crossings sometimes, especially to catch the loaded grainers before they drop all their mid and rear DPUs at the BNSF yard. The BNSF Bakersfield Sub extends west and north from the BNSF Bakersfield yard and passes close to my house and i do railfan out there a lot.

    • @cellogirl11rw55
      @cellogirl11rw55 5 лет назад +1

      In some cases, a no train horn zone can be beneficial, and crossings can be guarded more heavily to make up for the silent horn. In this case, the nearby residents were being woken up by the train horns several times per night. It was also a big nuisance to the surrounding residents and businesses during the day. For the record, a train horn is about 125db, which is loud enough to cause hearing damage after just 2 minutes. Imagine how annoying it would be to deal with that constantly interrupting your sleep and daily activities at home. That would be extremely unpleasant.
      As for guarding a no train horn zone, Seattle, Washington is a stellar example. They have a no train horn zone where the railroad passes by the waterfront on Elliot Bay. However, there haven't been any major incidents there in years because there is fencing around the tracks, all the crossings are gated, there are pedestrian gates at every crossing, and the traffic lights are synched with the crossings, which have bright electronic signs that say "TRAIN" with a no-right-turn symbol that turns on when a train is coming.

      I live about 1 block from a crossing, you don't even notice the horns after about a month, even at night. The only time I have been awakened by a train was a derailment that shook the house. So people being woke up is a farce. The train honks it is by in a few minutes.

    I don't agree with "No Train Horn" Zones. I say train horns make people aware a train is coming and to cancel a chance of someone being hit. All No Train Horn Zones need to be removed around the US and made a horn zone again no matter where they are at. If people around there don't like it then they should of never moved there and they should move somewhere else No Matter What.

      And I can never understand someone that buys or rents a home DIRECTLY NEXT to RailRoad Tracks and then has the audacity to complain about the trains horns and other sounds. It's like, hey STUPID, didn't you see the railroad tracks BEFORE you bought or rented that house or apartment.
      Some people are just totally brain-dead if they claim I didn't know the noise would be so bad or loud.

      When I lived in Melbourne, FL in the early 1980's, FEC enacted a NO HORN, NO BELLS at all Grade Crossings, the tally of people getting severely injured and usually killed rose in severity, that rise was almost close to an 80% increase in accidents at the grade crossings that had the crossing bells on the signal silenced as well as the loco horns and bells silenced. {I lived a few homes down from one of the grade crossings, so I saw what happens when this lunacy is enacted!}
      Albeit this was only from 10pm-7am daily, but it didn't work.
      And with todays idiots driving and yakking away or worse, texting on cell phones, this is probably going to increase fatalities at railroad grade crossing to 95% or even higher.
      And also cars are getting to be more and more soundproof from outside noises, which I also think is extremely stupid, this too is going to lead to more train vs vehicle accidents.
      But I guess this is just another way of cleaning out the gene pool when idiots don't bother to stop and look first to see if a train is coming.
      I foresee a ton of Darwin Award's in the making due to these idiotic and unsafe NO TRAIN HORN/BELLS and silencing the bells on crossing signals.

    For the train fans, me included, the horn is part of the thrill of seeing a train. I know of some no train horn crossings not too far away from where I live. It's not the same. It seems funny that we've put up with whistles and horns for over 100+ years, and now it seems to be a burden for people to hear a horn for just a few moments. It's stupid.

    1981 Rail Casualties:
    9,461 Collisions
    728 Deaths
    3,293 Injuries
    2018* Same Topics
    2,214
    270
    819
    You can see that although the numbers overall are down since 1981, the fatalities are still high, even higher by percentage in 2019 (around 40% vie 25%). Official estimate that around 3-5% of collisions are suicide based. Trains today travel much faster than 1981 and I believe there are more trains around now hauling freight, etc.
    Railroads have implemented no-horn zones all over the country. Many are established by some local laws passed to restrict noise. A lot of freight trains run late at night but, in normal operations, still are required to sound their horns. Flagstaff, Arizona, for example has been fighting a long battle with BNSF and others over noise, claiming it keeps people up at night and causes health problems.
    You can do the math here with the numbers. They have gone down over 50% but still remain high. I haven't seen any numbers from no-horn areas, but you can bet someone is keeping track them somewhere.

    I had several crossing's that were in the employee timetable no horn rated. On crossing in particular I used the horn after I slammed the train brake into emergency with a 97 car freight. A loaded school bus tried to go around the gates and when she saw me approaching and couldn't clear the croquet to stopped cars in front of her panicked and reversed the bus slamming into the car behind her the stopped trying to move. I took off the front bumper of her school bus and when I came to a stop 193 feet past the crossing her bus was alongside the locomotives. Fortunately other than bumps and bruises and a lot of crying none older than the 4th grade the kids were fine. After the kids were removed a train master told me they say you blew the horn, you kthis is a no horn crossing? I pointed to a house adjacent to the tracks and told him ohh yeah, that's the asshole who got it converted to a no horn crossing. He bought the house three years ago and has been bitching and EV,en thrown apples at passing locomotives. I will continue to blow the horn after this, screw the asshole and if he complains tell him the railroad will happily make an offer on his house, did he really expect the railroad would be quiet?
    19 months later he sold the house to a conductor on our road for half what he paid.i continuous blow for that crossing until I retired.
    The conductor and his wife? Sleep like babies when a train goes by at night.
