They are underdogs! Thats why i love mine, rarely see any modified xterras around me so its that much more special when you do see one. Main reason i got mine at first was because i was a nissan fanboy with the z/g cars. But with a titan and vk swapped xterra it does turn some heads at the trails, gotta represent the nissans 💪🏽
In 2011, I had to give up my manual transmission Toyota, due to a severe lumbar spine injury. I just couldn't work the clutch anymore without severe pain. I was trying to buy a top level off-road 4Runner to replace my manual FJ Cruiser, because everyone rages about 4Runners. Aside from Toyota's normally inflated prices, that happened to be the year of the Fukushima disaster in Japan. The top level off-road 4Runners were going for above MSRP (roughly $44K), and they didn't even come with the good stereo system, because Toyota couldn't get the parts, due to the disaster. I test drove the off-road 4Runner. It was okay. On a whim, I decided to check out the Nissan Xterra Pro-4X. I was blown away after test driving it. As a mechanical engineer, I did a little research. In almost every way, the 2nd Gen Xterra was a far better vehicle than the 4Runner, for literally $18,000 less. It has a fully boxed, high tensile strength Nissan Titan frame. It had better ground clearance. It was a more quiet ride, the stereo was awesome, the seats were more comfortable, it had better factory skid plates, a proven engine with all timing chains (albeit not great MPGs), I could keep going on. Needless to say, the decision was easy. After 12 years, I don't even see those 4Runners on the road anymore, because their C channel frames rust like crazy. 4Runners have become luxury vehicles for people who want to look like they go off-roading. If you want the best off-road vehicle, that's also a good daily driver, buy a used 2015 Xterra.
I got an Xterra (2012 Pro 4X) because it was the best deal in 2018 in low miles, with ground clearance, real 4wd and cargo room. It was in perfect shape inside and out. Cost me $12k at the time. I have put MTs and sliders on it, raised vents, only what I need to get get out of my driveway and "road" to get to work during monsoon season(deep water crossings). 5 years and 20k miles later I am very happy with my purchase. I did have a leaking passenger side axle seal, the vent wasn't plugged. It could have been just about any other 4wd to serve my needs but I am happy I bought it, it's growing on me.
It’s insane how inexpensive they are. I was pricing used Toyota forerunners and they were 3 - 4 times the price. I love mine and get compliments constantly. Mines lifted, wheels + tires, cargo basket , bumpers etc etc. have fun out there!
I have a 2004 Xterra 4x4 that I bought in 2011 for 10k. Only work done on it was a radiator, starter, and usual maintenance. Recently it needed several things done and I contemplated selling and buying another vehicle. I opted to sink 3k into repairs and now she drives and handles better than when I first got her. Xterra is a part of my family
I bought a 2011 Pro-4X, with leather seats, for $27,509. It's now 2023, and its still going strong. I've got a 2" lift, melt mod, and 33's. If I still lived in CO, I'd mod the crap out of it. But, since I live in the DC Metro (not by choice), its not worth modfing my daily driver. The only other mod is a cold air intake. I highly recommend getting one.
Had a 14 xterra pro 4x manual that I squeezed on a set of 35s with only 1.5” of lift and some creative trimming they worked great and no rubbing at full flex . Was fantastic in the deep snow . Love the simplicity of these things so much I got a frontier in the same setup .
I like the video. Gives some good ideas. I'm a Frontier guy myself. For the life of me, the only reason I can think Nissan changed the bolt pattern from 6x5.5 to 6x4.5 was to prevent Frontier owners from parts swapping from Titans/Armadas given the common parts that can be transplanted into the Frontier platform (remember, the X-Terra is the Frontier standard cab short bed 100" wheelbase).
Love my 2010 SE auto, have a leveling kit 1.5/2"... very reliable for the last 2.5 years I own it... It's my daily driver, and gas mileage is the only thing I don't like. Yes, quite simple engineering... with a 10mm you can take half of the car apart... :)
Nissans are just awesome !!!! I am and have been a big Nissan guy for a long dam time they are cool reliable and can do allot ! I just got my Xterra that's a fixer upper and excited to to make it my own little off road rig and help keep my Titan nice !!!! Sooo cool ya got the manual one
When I talk to off-road mod mechanic shops, they have great things to say about 2nd Gen Xterras (except for the 2006-2007 models w/ the transmission radiator fluid problems). They told me they constantly have Toyota Tacomas and 4Runners coming in for rust problems and frame problems. The 2nd Gens have fully boxed, high tensile strength Nissan Titan frames. It may be a little overbuilt, but that's better than Toyota off-roaders who have to get their ladder frames straightened! They're beasts, plain and simple. They may not have all the bells and whistles, but I love my 2011 Pro-4X. BTW, I used to be a Toyota guy (2000 MT Tacoma TRD, 2006 MT FJ Cruiser). They just don't compare to the 2nd Gen Xterra's. BTW, to truly off-road in a Toyota, you literally have to buy bolt-on frame strengthening plates. If you wanted to put 33's on a FJ Cruiser, Tacoma, or 4Runner, you literally had to do a front wheel well frame chop (they call it the body-mount chop)! I know, I used to have one. Toyota hasn't fixed that, even in 2023! I'll stick with my 2011 Xterra Pro-4X, that will last me another 10-15 years.
@@destination.x they definitely are. The problem is finding competent mechanics. If you live in the western US, there are several to choose from. Here in Northern VA, I can't even find someone to troubleshoot basic wiring harness issues. The dealers are complete idiots since it was discontinued in 2015. Nissan's CPUs are very proprietary, and very few independent mechanics have the ability to troubleshoot them properly. It's really frustrating.
I was also a Toyota guy and went with a 2011 Pro 4x too because my Tacoma's frame rusted out. I also have a 2020 Tundra for work, but I think they're too big for my off-road likes and MPG horrible... and Toyotas are overpriced
@@Nigriffthe Toyotas drivetrain is its strongest link. And if you’re outside the rust belt, and the cars well maintained, they’ll probably never run into mechanical issues. There’s ball joint issues in a few of them and frame issues but if you need 500k miles out of a car, and you’ll keep up with the maintenance, they’re great options. Looking into an xterra or pathfinder to throw around, I’m an overland guy so probably the pathfinder for the additional space
Nice little video. I just purchased a 2011 S with a auto (so my wife can also drive it) to replace my 1989 Toyota pickup. I was looking for a Tacoma 2 nd gen but every one I looked at had 300, 000km with a rotten frame and still $15000. The Xterra caught my eye as a good alternative for a base camp rig for our back country adventures. It is stock except for a add a leaf and one owner with awesome history....and best of all a third the cost. So same kind of reason for purchase I guess. Ps central Vancouver Island (Port Alberni).
Good video. I was looking for some info on Xterra camper builds. Got a bit of that here but I got more than that, insight from someone who's owned one for awhile and knew a good amount before they bought one and learned (and has shared) some lessons they learned along the way. THAT is valuable information. And you seem to take an honest look at why you did things, what you did right and what maybe, knowing what you know now, you might have done a little better. Again, I found this to be a very good video.
Hey! Thanks for the comment and I’m happy I could help a little. That’s pretty much everything I was hoping to provide out of this video. Hopefully do another, updated version by end of this year👌🏼
I have an 03 Xterra XE with the 3.3l. I'm doing a budget build as well. Very capable rigs. I'm having a lot of fun with my X. I'm in the Kern River Valley in California. Lots of trails around here.
Great video, man, thanks so much! I've been wanting an Xterra for some time now, and you've answered a lot of my questions. And for what it's worth, the negatives you mentioned aren't really that important to me. So now, I shop. Cheers!
I'm still driving a 2005 OFF ROAD Xterra... I also own 2013 Mall-finder, but that's basically my wife's vehicle. I've always preferred to drive my X, hoping it lasts another 10 years!!
My 2013 Xterra has almost 270,000 mi on it and running strong. Only work I've done is maintenance on the suspension. Time to do the clock spring. But no major issues since I've had it at 103,000 mi.
I have a 2012 S model at 103k miles and outperform full size trucks, other suvs and decimate jeeps on and off road. No mods. I've owned it since 2015 and only replaced outer tie rods, and just did rear struts due to use as a loging truck and being severely overloaded on a regular basis.
I got a 2012 frontier sv king cab 4x4 i did end up swapping my rear axle for a m226 off a pro 4x so i got a rear locker. I bought a Bilstein 5100 kit off all dogs off-road and the .5 in spacer and got their uca's. I also got new wheels and threw on some 33s the truck rides phenomenal on road and off road im super happy with it its took me everywhere i wanted to go. I may titan swap it in the future but im definitely happy the way it is. If you really want a locker the axle swap is very easy man you can do it in a day easy there's a step by step direction post on the x message board I did it in a half day by myself moving the axle around on the jack by myself was the most difficult.
Your Frontier sounds siiiick! I actually just got a new overlander built Xterra thats fully done up so that’ll be premiering on this channel eventually 👀
Great looking Rig man! I actually got one, a 2008 Off-Road for the same reason "The are Underdogs" and everyone doesn't have one, they are more unique. I had two Land Rover Discovery D1 and then D2. I actually don't like the looks of the Toyota's other than the FJ Cruiser's and it took awhile for those to grown on me.
Love to hear it! I’m same with FJ’s lol. When i was younger i always called them ‘Barbie cars’ because I thought they looked like a toy version of a Hummer… but I’m a fan now in my older, wiser age 👌🏼

Solid rig!! I'm also slowly building out my X. Next for me is UCA and Diff rebuild. Long term goal, VK swap; so stocking up with Titan parts now to make it easier later.
I used to drive a Nissan Xterra just like the one in this video. I fell in love with it since the first day I droved it. However, it gave me a tone of problems and uncxeertainties.
Hey great video and Xterra ! I am also proud owner of 2007 Xterra model X ( auto lol ) I have had it for about 2 years and that when I started making videos as well dont look at my first Xterra video its so bad ol
I will say this about the comment about the S/C version ! They are absolutely awesome but that being said they do require a little more love and maintenance then just your average vehicle! That being said they are still wicked tough and have a iron block. If someone blows one up that's really on them. Fuel sucks these days and take for example i have a S/C frontier and i always have spare fuel with for the bikes and especially none ethanol laced fuel. You really have to go out of your way to help add and use the best fuel but i have towed huge race trailers driven across 120° hot desert hauling absolute a$$ and still get almost 20mpg while doing 70-75 mph ! That being said though that's why i use the best fluids and make sure all my maintenance is done. All the vehicles Nissan has sold and built since the newer stuff is actually extremely tough and rugged! I have had multiple vehicles and they all ran good and even better when i got my hands on them ! I have had old Pathfinder's with 250+k that absolutely have screamed drifting down back roads or towing logs out of the woods! They are awesome and always worth a shot! I am excited as hell to build my X here soon just found some wheels and more cool stuff for this thing! It will be awesome to see what that engine can do and have a sweet little off road toy hauler 🤘🤘🤘🤘🤘
I have the same Bilstein 6112 in front, and 5100 in rear for my 2012 Nissan Xterra. I than got all new Old Man Emu leaf springs, now get the front bumper like yours.
Nissan didn't sell a lot of 2nd Gen Xterra's, hence the high cost of replacement parts. They also didn't upgrade to a morre modern engine, with better MPGs, and they intriduced the 2nd Gens in the heart of the Middle East wars, when gas was $4-5/gal. Most people just weren't going fir it. It's a shame, because its such a great vehicle. The lack of aftermarket support correlates to the low sales volume. A front winch bumper for a Wrangler is literally half the price. It is what it is. If you really want to mod your 2nd Gen heavily, you're going to pay a lot. But, for me, with a young daughter in the back seat, I'd much rather drive long trips with my Xterra, than a Wrangler with a solid front axle, and little to no side impact protection. Its definitely a trade-off.
I love my 01 bright ass yellow X... what a beast yea shes slow but she will go anywhere built properly body on frame 4x4 took me 30min to level out the front and throw 31" on her
They’re getting pretty scarce where I am! Mine has some pretty severe surface rust (previous owner did not maintain it well), but going to try and preserve it as long as possible. Would love to get another one afterwards, but not too sure with the prices now.
It’s still kicking it lol. Did the timing chain when i got it so thats probably most major/common fix I’ve had done on it. Just routine maintenance lately…
Manual that is bad arse. Man i bought my 2014, live on harsh weather Ilsand . Been hit 2 times. still going strong lol , need a Grill like yours tbh. only 70k miles
Nice x. I have a 2011 pro 4 x and I’m in the market for a steel bumper. Did you weld this coastal bumper? All I am seeing is diy weld kits on their website
Well as soon a I saw the stick shift I said to myself "now that's a good rig". I'm looking for one of these in the OR/pro-4x trim and it's always nice to hear different people's take on them. How do you find the gearing with the manual and 33" tires?
I have one for sale. Its a 07xterra nismo SE side runners front metal guard grill back light cover are also. Metal covers does have a tow hitch. Silver in color. Motor strong 170,000
Totally dependant on your plans for the usage! I’d recommend a simple lift and bigger tires to start. Some people say to buy a steel bumper first though and just use out the current shocks until theyre needed to be replaced
The stock L-brackets that came with the awning then attached then directly to the stock roof rack with 2.25” diameter muffler/exhaust clamps. And the 5100 have been great. Amazing quality and durability for the little cost they are
Extreme jealous of the ‘02 in yellow! Rogue Overland’s SAS yellow one is my all time dream haha. And the bumper is from Coastal Offroad out of Vancouver!
Was that a grouse? They have to be the dumbest birds on the planet. When I lived in Fort Collins, CO, a grouse flew up to a very close tree branch to get away from me. I threw a rock at its chest, hoping to have grouse for dinner. Unfortunately the rock was too small, and just knocked it off the branch. I chased it on the ground. For all their stupidity, they run pretty fast!
It is beyond me why guys wear their hats backwards. No, you do not look cool, it makes one appear as "not-right-bright, a backwards Bubba guy." Do you realize it leaves a silly half-moon suntan on your forehead, and appears when not wearing a hat as well? Thus, not knowing the bill of their hat belongs in the front protecting their eyes is not cool.

i subscribed because you keep it real. thank you. 😎
I appreciate that! Thanks for the support
I used to drive a Nissan Xterra just like the one in this video. I fell in love with it since the first day I droved
it. However, it gave me a tone of problems and uncxeertainties.
I feel all of that.
Hey great video and Xterra ! I am also proud owner of 2007 Xterra model X ( auto lol ) I have had it for about 2 years and that when I started making videos as well dont look at my first Xterra video its so bad ol
Ayyy! I’ve definitely watched your T-swap installation video a few times before!
@@destination.x haha nice ! is that a hint of what to come to your build ? ))) anyways I hope it might be helpful and some what fun ;)
@@DIY_AUTO_PHOTO 👀 if not this X, my next one I’d titant swap for sure
@@destination.x Awesome man ! this is the best mod for Xterra ever... well right after V8 swap.. lol
Hell yeah! I love it
I have the same Bilstein 6112 in front, and 5100 in rear for my 2012 Nissan Xterra. I than got all new Old Man Emu leaf springs, now get the front bumper like yours.
My leaf springs are definitely do for an upgrade or at minimum an add-a-leaf
@@destination.x That bumper is bad, just need to get it now.
Do you like the ome more then bilstein? Debating which to get. Have the 4600 now with shackles and looking to update it this summer
A-Tach Mounts and ProClipsUSA make some phone mounts that clip in behind the dash panels and wont damage it.
Ooo! Cool! I’ll look into them, thanks👌🏼
I drove a Wrangler when I was young. Great offroad but very unsafe and load on road trips
Too bad they didn’t make a center diff lock for the xterra. Very underrated off road trucks
Cool Video Dude 😎
Thanks. Glad you enjoyed it! 🤘🏼
I love my 01 bright ass yellow X... what a beast yea shes slow but she will go anywhere built properly body on frame 4x4 took me 30min to level out the front and throw 31" on her
Love that! Also very jealous you have it in yellow 🥵
They’re getting pretty scarce where I am! Mine has some pretty severe surface rust (previous owner did not maintain it well), but going to try and preserve it as long as possible. Would love to get another one afterwards, but not too sure with the prices now.
I’m in the same boat. I’d love to get a ‘09 or newer pro4x but we’ll see with prices and gas…yadda yadda
@@destination.x I’m hoping I can get a few more years out of it and once I graduate see what the market is like then.
@@destination.x how’s yours in terms of condition?
It’s still kicking it lol. Did the timing chain when i got it so thats probably most major/common fix I’ve had done on it. Just routine maintenance lately…
Where to get parts?
Nice build mate. If we had Xterra in the UK I’d definitely own one. Nissan have been undervalued for too long.
Thanks! I Totally agree
Manual that is bad arse. Man i bought my 2014, live on harsh weather Ilsand . Been hit 2 times. still going strong lol , need a Grill like yours tbh. only 70k miles
Island living👌🏼
Now I want one
Underdog are underrated
Hell yeah brother
Nice x. I have a 2011 pro 4 x and I’m in the market for a steel bumper. Did you weld this coastal bumper? All I am seeing is diy weld kits on their website
Yes I did weld it. All their bumpers are kits that need to be welded together
@@destination.x do you think a novice welder could handle that job? Also what type of finish did you use? It looks great. Thanks for the reply
Have this same one in automatic. Cool stuff
Love it!
You got the manual, you lucky bugger they are hard to find. I have a 2010 X Offroad. I will keep my X forever.
Yep whole reason I got this one was for the manual lol. Had its issues but I wanted a manual that bad
I have a 09 it came with a all the manuals like when from the dealer
I’ve also got a 2007 Nissan xterra, but it’s not black..it’s yellow lol but love the setup on yours
Honestly, I'm jealous of the yellow lol. Would love a yellow or silver Off Road/Pro 4X trim
How those duratracs ride on the road? Mine are so fucken stiff feel every bump
Yeah I’d say that’s about right. Not as loud on the road as everyone online described though.
The tread has lasted though so I still love them.
Well as soon a I saw the stick shift I said to myself "now that's a good rig". I'm looking for one of these in the OR/pro-4x trim and it's always nice to hear different people's take on them. How do you find the gearing with the manual and 33" tires?
I didnt notice a difference in gearing when I went to 33’s. Would def need to re-gear if ever went to 35’s though
Good to know, thank you!@@destination.x
Want a xterra badly
I have one for sale. Its a 07xterra nismo SE side runners front metal guard grill back light cover are also. Metal covers does have a tow hitch. Silver in color. Motor strong 170,000
Bout to buy a 2012 Pro 4X, what should my first mods be? Steel Bumper & Hitch, Lift, Roof Cargo/Lights, Snorkel, Bigger Tires?
Totally dependant on your plans for the usage! I’d recommend a simple lift and bigger tires to start. Some people say to buy a steel bumper first though and just use out the current shocks until theyre needed to be replaced
Z1offroad
If you put 1" spacers on the wheels, do.they not make adapters anymore for different bolt patterns ?
Yes lol… didn’t think of it at the time. Next X i get I’ll most likely do that
Bro my 2095 xterra got 250,000 on it and still running better than anything else out here
Love to hear it! 🤘🏼
How did you do mounts for the awning?
Also how are the 5100s after getting weight back there with the rooftop?
The stock L-brackets that came with the awning then attached then directly to the stock roof rack with 2.25” diameter muffler/exhaust clamps. And the 5100 have been great. Amazing quality and durability for the little cost they are
@@destination.x appreciate that!
Where did you get the front steel bumper. Been a Nissan guy all my life too. I have a 2002 xterra yellow 4wd
Please tell me that no quail were harmed in the production of this video…
😂 haha don’t worry, it was left unharmed
Right!!! Yotas are overpriced on the island! I’m looking for a truck maybe I’ll look into the xtera 😮
May put mine up for sale soon 👀
@@destination.x 🤔
@@destination.x how much???
@@destination.x I’m In the ladysmith area
@@cherrybomb555 not sure right now. Might swap out a few minor things first
I'm going to look at a 2013 5 speed for 6k tomorrow
Hope it turns out to be a buy👌🏼
Eng lite on no go
Where’d you get the bumper?
Coastal Offroad
The ones with rear lockers are so much more money
Yeah it’s crazy the difference in price
The Nissan Xterra is available in 4 flavours, 1st 1st gen, 2nd 1st gen, 1st 2nd gen and the second 2nd gen 😂

Breezy beautiful! Cover girl.
Well, thanks for talking me out of buying an Xterra.😂
You won't have parts to repair
It is beyond me why guys wear their hats backwards. No, you do not look cool, it makes one appear as "not-right-bright, a backwards Bubba guy." Do you realize it leaves a silly half-moon suntan on your forehead, and appears when not wearing a hat as well? Thus, not knowing the bill of their hat belongs in the front protecting their eyes is not cool.
Better aerodynamics
Lol you are are fucking weirdo. You got triggered by someone wearing their hat backwards and decided to write a whole paragraph about it because you have nothing better to do with your life.
You typed up all that about a guy wearing his hat backwards? His GF Angela is better than any woman you'd ever get... Or maybe you're into guys?
R50 > xterra
Then why you selling yours 🤔🤔🤔
@@destination.x make a walk round video of it
@@Slow_x4 maybe i will!
I've had both. 2nd gen Xterra is better in every way, especially the good ones.
R50s are not reliable and aren't made for off road. My GFs R50 is always in the shop.
with a 07 arent you scared of the smod
It’s manual so that’s not an issue
