    I think the idea that the “RUclipsr” dying is an interesting point. Most people in my life (including myself) send at LEAST an hour or so on RUclips daily. The app is doing just fine! I think the wave of 2010s era RUclipsr who got big off making funny faces and on some scale racist jokes is finally dying off because the newer generation can’t relate or see the humour in it, which is why you don’t hear from people like lele pons anymore (random example). Though it won’t happen, it’s nice to see RUclips almost returning to its roots where it was just people with cameras and a small idea deciding to talk, and not a whole production crew. Sure you still get it a lot, but this platform was about being able to create and express yourself regardless of who you were, and in seeing it a lot more recently

    • @theyfukenwmesubliminally
      @theyfukenwmesubliminally 2 года назад +43

      I dont think youtube is returning to its roots at all. Its more sterile and corporate than ever. Content farms, obnoxious thumbnails, people have learned the formula and just play the algorithm. These kinds of videos are extremely rare on yt now. Maybe your account is stuck in a specific section of yt where you dont see it. Which is also another thing they ruined, youll never discover anything new anymore unlese you actively search for it, even the search engine wants to keep you in a bubble.

    • @perpickupa
      @perpickupa 2 года назад +10

      @@theyfukenwmesubliminally I can see your point and don’t get me wrong, I KNOW how corporate it is, I’m not trapped in a consumerism bubble. Im only saying this BECAUSE I find new channels and videos everryday, in various communities where anyone has a chance to get noticed. Of course there are still your big RUclips’s but I’m referring to the fact that you can go into a niche interest on RUclips and still find people who are getting noticed without having to rely on previous fame. A few years back, people would only be focusing on people involved in the “drama community” (not mentioning names but I’m sure you know who I’m referring to) where now I feel people don’t care as much about what’s going on with these people and just want to enjoy content.

      I totally agree, there was definitely a rise sometime between 2014-2016 where videos were very flashy, big, loud, everyone collabed with everyone, and there were all sorts of things like Drew mentioned book deals, tours etc.. I hadn't really thought that the platform was possibly going back to its roots of just people making videos and expressing themselves but I'm definitely seeing it more and more, although in a new style. Creators like Valspire Family, heyxnatalie, Ryan Ng and Wholesome Simon are starting a new wave for sure. They're incredibly talented and artistic in their editing and filming but they're still authentic in the way that RUclips was back in 2009 and before, sharing real moments and just sort of growing up and figuring it all out. I'm really excited for what's to come on RUclips, I hope this is the start of a new era where we can be more open with each other while still weaving creativity into it.

But it feels gross to focus so much time on growing my following and numbers rather than spending time making art which is what I actually want to spend my time doing. I debated getting on TikTok to promote my work and sell art but I’ve decided against it because it doesn’t feel worth it. Feels like selling my soul for a little clout lol trying to just stay humble, make art that I love and am proud of and whoever sees it, sees it.

    youtube is literally not dead, everyone and their grandma uses youtube... my roommate overheard you say "is youtube dying? he's only 16!" and asked me to rewind the video and show them because they thought it was so funny. very funny and clever stuff in this video, on god.
    i absolutely agree that there is some merit to algorithms, but i also don't like being pigeon holed or whatever because theres a lot of stuff recommended to me where im like, i get it guy, i watched one episode of cat from hell or one season of cat from hell and now its all over my front page, its all over my lawn. i also like to throw my algorithm off for fun heh.
    i love physical media and have a cd, dvd, record, and vhs collection heavily furnished from thrift stores and knowing the folks who know good media. i still listen to so many bands that friends have recommended to me. i watched a video of yours a while ago i think maybe 7 years ago where you had a guster shirt on and i listened to a lot of their music and discovered one of my favorite bands through you that way!
    i do not fuck with the way that finding movies and streaming music online has become easier and harder and weirder at the same time, and the amount of paywalls that have been steadily increasing. i also feel bad that using the internet and electronics for prolonged periods by billions of users is bad for the planet. but i love consuming content :( i've spent so much, i'd wager most of my life outside of school/work listening to music or watching movies or youtube videos.
    usually after i have a really good day i have absolutely no energy or feel gut wrenching despair the next day??? so saturday was great, sunday i didnt exist, and today was an alright day :) i stayed positive and took care of myself. work went well. i had an asthma attack. i made a really good meal. (i freestyled a creamy marinara w/ red wine and pasta, i like to have pasta or lasagna on mondays bc it's garfields least favorite day of the week but his favorite meal) it all balances out yanno.
    im delirious w joy that you sang my name :) $30 patreon pledge is more than worth the years of content thats provided laughter, joy, company, and food for thought. i hope you have a wonderful week see u soon drew!!

    Fuuuck I struggle so much with the concept of manifesting. No attempt has ever worked for me and all the negative things I obsess about (technically manifesting, surely?) don't come to anything. My experience has been that if I worry enough about something I make it NOT happen, that's basically inverted manifestation. Almost the opposite. How the hell I'd reroute that into creating positive outcomes is WAY above my pay grade. If anyone can help me with this I'd be genuinely grateful.

    I completely get what you're saying when you talk abt that feeling of wanting to be kept in the loop w current trends, tv shows etc. for me it's weird I hate being involved in something when it's popular, I'm not purposely forcing myself to not watch something or whatever to not seem "mainstream". I think that's dumb honestly, I just get so overwhelmed by all the opinions and analysis that it becomes more than just casually being interested in something. I feel like I have to have a certain opinion abt a character or trend that I can't just consume something to switch off my brain for a while. it's not something I consciously do, like avoid what's popular but I realised I kinda prefer it. when squid games came out I watched it and I just felt annoyed that I couldn't just enjoy it for what it is without constant input from all over the Internet, like it was unavoidable.
    I'm not sure where I'm going with this but I remember I downloaded tikok to feel in the loop and quickly realised I hated it and felt overwhelmed. All the opinions, intense short form videos that told me the worst things happening I'm the world. then scrolling to see someone doing a makeup trend then back to a video abt misogyny or transphobia.
    Since covid I've been consuming more of the internet and I got into so many platforms i never bothered with. I was stressed out all the time, consumed by every bad thing happening all over the world all the time. it took me a while but I left most of them. for me youtube is more relaxing, I can choose what I see and I know who I like and who to avoid. I don't feel the need to be a part of everything all the time. I watch things that make me happy and I notice how quickly those trends end and how quickly ppl forget abt them. I realised how forcing myself to be involved in something that is constantly changing, to fit some weird image of being involved and informed was rly just damaging my mental health

    I struggled with this question a lot and I still am, I feel like many or most of the creators that RUclips started out with have moved onto something else and it makes us feel like its dying, but there are a lot that are still hanging around (like you, that makes me insanely happy) and a lot that are new and make great content. It's just a new page, and it's gonna be hard for it to do justice to the golden years but its making a sort of comeback

    Drew, I had been subscribed to your other channel for god knows how long and when you took that break I would constantly check to see if you had decided to come back, the fact that you now also have this channel brings me so much joy, I can only think of like maybe another 2 people on this website who I actively seek out and sit around for an hour or two every other day just to feel, like, yeah we're hanging out lol.
    I really appreciate this channel, specially because I relate to a lot of it and it makes me feel less lonely, like, I know plenty of people irl may share these opinions (or not) but they'll seldom sit down and talk about it with me for an hour, which I guess I understand, but it always feels like everyone has another 26 topics to cover with other people and in other platforms. Anyway, yeah, I value how openly you talk about stuff, also I crack up the whole time.
    Oh and RUclips isn't dying, I don't think. Idk, I only go on tiktok maybe once a month now and it pisses me off more than it evokes any other emotion from me every time, meanwhile I come here daily, I enjoy long format ~content a lot more.

    I think RUclips has been "dead" ever since they allowed mainstream celebrities like Will Smith to run the site because now you have youtubers like Mr Beast who base their entire content on money and material things.
