@@grainydaysss you crushed what little trust i had in you since discovering your channel. you said you wouldn’t reply but you did. i must now drown my newly acquired sorrow in some MD2020. Thanks a lot Jason.
I like Ektachrome for it's punchier colors and harder blacks. I feel those traits work especially well with 8mm's soft details to give a feeling of viewing memories in a nostalgic way. It gives the basics so you can reconnect with the emotions when you shot it without being distracted by an abundance of detail.
After I’ve edited some of my film shots in Lightroom, they can look almost digital (especially when using fine grain films). I don’t think this would ever be possible with super 8 as that nostalgic look is so baked in. It’s such a weird thing to see super 8 footage with brand new cars in it and people wearing face masks. So surreal
honestly, even if the dynamic range was lacking it looked quite phenomenal. I’m not too crazy on Ektachrome for still but it’s looking pretty great for super8.
It’s my birthday and Ektachrome Christmas 3! I just shot some super 8 ektachrome 100d over Christmas too. Waiting on it to get back from development and scan.
You should get a Super8 projector and project your Ektachrome footage. It’s a complete different experience than looking at the scan on a video screen.
Do not give up on the super 8mm The Ektachrome Super 8 has its place, but you are correct. It’s dynamic range is limited. For color you need to go with the Vision 3 negative film. I shoot both regular 8mm (my preference actually) and Super 8. My favorite camera is the R10. Just try shooting one roll of V-3 50D and a roll of the 500T. Then make your decision.
Hey, great video! I am using Ektachrome since it has become available again, but mostly in 16 mm and home processing. The results are stunning when projected on a screen, not nostalgic at all! I recognized in your shots, that you sometimes override the latitude. If the main object is in the shadow, the exposure control has to be taken pointing into the shadow, then the result gets brighter. For sunlight landscape and beach scenes, a polarization filter would increase the color contrast and give you that up-to-date look.
Good old super 8. I shot a feature film in 1994 with ektachrome and kodachrome sound cartridges. I need to get them scanned to high def and remaster it some day. I used an Elmo 1012xls camera. Fun times.
All I got from this is how I now really need to watch Stuart Little again. You make me laugh every time, plus I really enjoy watching your work. One of my top 3 youtubers regarding film photography.
This channel keeps me from ending it all. And by that I mean ending the binge watching of RUclips for hours instead of focusing on producitve aspects of my life that actually do semi-matter. Thanks Jason. I meant Baxter.
As a german, I am proud of you that you can pronounce Jägermeister so well. 👌Probably cost a shitton to have the Ektachrome cartridges developed. The look is really fantastic though.
Now I'm startled because it looks from the NorCal footage that is possible I saw you shooting on the D Street Bridge in December. Two people with film cameras, hmmm
Hey! I got Jagermiester for Christmas! I also got BrewDog Five Hundred Cuts rum, which smells like a Christmas made from old bananas. Tastes like evaporating pirate dreams. Very warming.
With adequate lighting I like shooting Ektachrome on super 8. I've also shot various color negative film on super 8 and I had similar issues in low light conditions. Since the film and processing is expensive I have to be more selective about when I use it and that is kind of a bummer. I run mine through a projector so I have to use color positive.
Love your videos and your lovely humor, i hope you do more super 8 stuff, we love the nostalgia and would more love to see it created by you, but of course it is better, if you enjoy it
I shot my first ever roll of Ektachrome over Christmas, it’s absolutely gorgeous. $35 to buy, develop, and scan a 120 roll was a bit ridiculous though.
@@Rodri19926610 I’m super lucky enough to live close to Process One in Overland Park, Kansas. They are a full service film lab, one of the last left in the country. Develop BW, C41, E6, in every size from APS through large format. However, their mail in turnaround times are very long at 1-2 months. In person drop offs turnaround times are a week maximum though. I can attest to their ability though, they’ve never done me wrong
Definitely nostalgic looking. I just actually bought my first pack of 120 Ektachrome. Shooting it for stills is very different from shooting video which I imagine would be a nightmare. Nonetheless, I thought the results from your 8 mm were very heart warming and timeless. Even without the dynamic range.
I inherited two 8mm film cameras from my father in law and as you can see they are just something to hang on the wall, Although he did use one of them to film penguins in the ant-artic while we was the weather officer on an US navy ice breaker. when I locate the film I will post it.
Just an editing suggestion if you could cut out the voice over and the superfluous shots and just leave Baxter I think that’d help your channel a lot! Doesn’t even have to be analog just digital shots of Baxter! Thanks!
I used to shoot super8 when I started filmmaking back the late 90’s. I was even able to shoot S8 the first season of the IFC’s game show The Ultimate Film Fanatic. But with the rising cost of the process and the difficulties of finding working gear, I have abandoned it and settled on learning tricks to make my footage look like S8 in post instead. 😂
Ive been seeing a lot of comments that the ektachrome jammed pretty constantly from other people. It seems like its an Ektachrome problem for some reason. So definetly shoot color negative if you want to shoot super8 again!
I bought a regular 8 camera over a super 8 camera because it’s manual and that’s a challenge but also because it doesn’t use cartridges that only Kodak loads. Ektachrome just doesn’t seem to look as good on super 8 as it does in other formats. I think I prefer Vision 3.
Interestingly my first and only cartridge of Ektachrome jammed and eventually snapped halfway through my otherwise reliable (with Vision3 50D anyway) Eumig 128XL. Eventually I’ll get motivated to send it off to be processed and scanned but I know I’ll be shelling out a small fortune for a minute and a half of disappointment. There’s a joke in there, somewhere. Also Australia’s sole Super8 processor can only develop reversal stocks as negatives now, so I’m not seeing much point in Ektachrome now.
This was so beautiful! I really enjoyed this footage and the video! How / where did you develop the super 8 footage and how much did you pay for that? And how expensive where the rolls? Chees G!
I think Super 8 is great if you have a project in mind that requires that look, but it's just too damn fiddly and expensive for hobby use. Also, when you see how great film photography can look, it makes super 8 seem like hot garbage.
It seems to have a lot more mute colors (muter idk how to say it) than the still version. Do you think it's because of the rem jet layer, or the telecine process? Maybe both? I still love the way it looks. Also did it have more latitude to work with in editing than the still version?
Getting jaeger for Christmas since the age of six explains a lot. Finally putting the pieces together.

Merry Christmas Baxter !!!
I love you for saying great British bakeoff rather than baking show or something, instant sub
That lens flare at 2:50 went through my soul. I love super 8! Great footage man!
You mentioned it, i clicked and watched again, and it passed into mine also, and will to those who see your comment

ok

honestly, if you get a super 8 camera which can do a frame at a time for stop motion video, you basically have a ~3600 shot camera

The footage looked almost as good as it felt to hear an American finally say bake off instead of baking show.

I do like seeing the 8mm videos there something pretty unique in the "hey I'm a dork shootings film" genre
