I think this commentary is inaccurate. Dick Button said her double loop was planned to be a triple. But I don't think Jill ever had a triple loop. I never saw her attempt one. Correct me if I'm wrong. But she only had a flip, toe and salchow
You are correct. Back in those days, having all your triples was not as emphasized as it is now, and most US ladies at the senior level had 2 or 3. Jill never had a triple loop. In fact, in an interview with her teammate, Caryn Kadavy decades later, she said their coach, Carlo Fassi decided Jill would have the triple flip and Caryn would have the triple loop, despite the fact Caryn also had the triple flip in her arsenal.
The dress was iconic. Got to love Peggy ... went right for the question that would drive Jill crazy! As far as commentating was concerned, Peggy, Dick and Jim McHale, it doesn't get any better than that, even with all their errors and blunders.
hey dwanye its johansan do u have any video of your skating i wss tge biggest fan yours when u started and i think the world would love to see ya skating and not to mention u had a layback that was just lovely! i miss u
Yes agree. Now seeing Jill I can say she should have placed third and not fourth. Like dick button said it is not just about the triples but overall performance. Jill was much better than Debbie in the presentation of the program. Debbie just gave up after the first combo went wrong.
True but Debi was in first place after figures and short program which is why she earned her bronze medal. Jill interestingly enough in the '80s didn't do so well in figures at the worlds and 88' olympics. She would when this regime retired which is why she won the 90' worlds when Midori landed her triple axels.
@@jessicagalvin363 Debi was so far ahead in figures and the short program it would have been almost impossible for Jill to catch her. I believe she needed to beat her by 4 spots in the long program. Even 3 would have been nearly impossible. The only skater who could have reasonably been placed between them (with Trenary higher) is Leistner.
Honestly, imo, her technical marks were too high! Some judges gave Manley 5.7 for technical, and she was flawless. So no way Trenary shoulda had a 5.7 then
I think she was very pretty. Great ‘packaging’ she had. Could have been a great figure skater/Model. Did some ok stuff, unfair to say, since Jill was older than Tonya, been around longer. But I think Tonya was a more ...important skater/athlete, this would have been her year to do great at an Olympics.
Although not her best performance, for my money Trenary deserved bronze over Thomas as she skated a good short too (combination slightly scratchy but on one foot). She had a God-given grace about her that very few skaters have. No way should Thomas have placed 4th in the free above Trenary.
I have to respectfully disagree. I felt that Sumners deserved the gold. Yes she reduced jumps, but if you write down all of her elements and compare them to Kati even with the reduced difficulty Sumners wins... seriously write it down. Under the current judging system it would have been obvious because you count everything. Trenary was off balance in this program and her short. Thomas was strong in 2 phases and tried a 3/3 she deserved the bronze.
Hard to believe that this would have even gotten 4th at the Olympics. The choreography was blah, her spins were slow, a lot of skating between elements, and jumps fair at best. Nowadays this wouldn’t even qualify.
Don't forget, Compulsory Figures was 30% of the overall score/placement. Figures held up many skaters who had weaker FS like Witt, Thomas, and Trenary.
Well its almost different sports. Yes she couldnt compete today, but if you brought our current world and olympic medalists they all be in last place after compulsaries, and very few have the performace ability they had back than as well as the polish. even though these were easier triple jumps, they had height and speed which isnt valued anymore.
As a young skater and into adulthood I have watched her over and over again...she was perfection to me. 💓
Best hair ever!
As a kid, Jill Trenary fascinated me. I think it was because she just had the ultimate 80s career woman look to her.
Like she should have starred in Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" video, not Brinkley. Lol
That was a beautiful dress

I never saw one either. They said the same thing at the U.S Nationals. I think it was massive misinformation somewhere.

Your right the loop is more difficult than the flip jump , no support of the toe . And jill could not pull off a triple

Keep in mind that she also was suffering from the flu. Karyn Cadavy also had the flu, but unfortunately, she had to pull out of the competition.
A prime example of the Nutcracker done right!
Deserved bronze medalist. Always underscored. Great performance from Jill.
She actually completed more triples and combos than Debi Thomas!!!

no mr button…her technical marks were not too low. she got 5.7s and she didn't do near what midori ito did.

So beautiful!
Always loved her beautiful programs. Debbie Thomas couldn't hold a candle to her!
She was less consistent than Debi.

she omitted the double flip at the end of the program with her hands by the sides, btw
I believe Thomas placed behind her in the LP Ito a was third I think
No Thomas beat her for 4th in the LP on a 5-4 split.
they did not do very many revolutions on the spins, she did 2.5 on a camel which today doesn't count as a spin
Boy did Carlo have, "I'm gonna cut a bish" look on his face in the Kiss and Cry.
Was Jill sick or just horrible nerves? Can't remember.
Think she was somewhat sick. Her training mate, Caryn Kadavy got the flu and had to pull out of the competition.
5.7 for technical merit?? 🤦🏻♂️
I wanted Jill to win! -
お父さん。4:40 5:06心配でおちつかないね。
She was prettier than Nancy Kerrigan, or any of them at the time!
Prettier than Katarina Witt?
E - ..maybe from a distance yes! Katarina was a little over hyped, no?
Definitely! And she rocked that 80s look.

I agree, Trenary was probably undermarked in both figures and the short program, and should have clearly beaten Thomas in the long.

renzy79 Sumners won silver 1984. She didn't compete in 88.
renzy79 .
Eewww, I would not want to have a skating dad like Trenary. He's always antsy, nervous, and jumpy in the stands. The worst kind of a skating parent.
It could be worse. You could have had a parent like Tiffany Chin.

@@3Axel1996 wasn’t Jill sick during this performance. I remember the flu burned through the Olympic village.

Could you imagine them demanding the edge quality from back then in today’s skaters?
