  • Welcome back, Giants fans! In this episode of "2 Giant Goofballs," Drew and Rob dive into the acquisition of Matt Nelson, a versatile swing tackle from the Detroit Lions. The Lions have boasted one of the best offensive lines in the NFL, and we've taken a page from their book by bringing in Nelson to bolster our own O-line.
Matt Nelson stands tall at 6'7" and 315 pounds, and at 28 years old, he brings significant experience. Although he had a PFF grade of 58.0 last season, it's important to note that this was in just three games, two of which were starts. Over his career, Nelson has played in 43 games with 14 starts, primarily serving as a backup tackle for the Lions over the past four seasons.
The Giants have strategically poached Nelson, understanding that while he might not have cracked the starting lineup consistently in Detroit due to their stellar tackles, he has shown promise and capability. This move adds depth and competition, particularly at the right tackle position, where the heat is on.
Drew and Rob explore the dynamics of the right tackle spot, emphasizing how Nelson's presence could shake things up. If Evan Neal doesn't secure the position, Nelson could be a dark horse candidate to take over. Additionally, Jermaine Eluemunor, another recent acquisition, could slot in at left guard, leaving the right tackle spot open for Nelson.
Despite finishing last season on IR, Nelson has generally been healthy throughout his career. The hosts acknowledge that injuries are part of the game and stress the importance of having reliable depth. Nelson's versatility and decent performance when given the chance make him an intriguing option.
This episode also touches on the excitement surrounding the Giants' O-line situation. After years of struggling and patching up the line with practice squad signings and mid-season pickups, the Giants finally have a roster with multiple viable options. The hosts express optimism about the upcoming season, thanks to the improved depth and potential upgrades.
Join us as we break down Matt Nelson's potential impact on the Giants' offensive line and what this means for the team moving forward. Don't miss out on this insightful discussion. yeah, if he's coming off an injury he'll fit right in : ) If Nelson is capable of decent play at OT that would be a HUGE bonus even if he's not starter material....... fingers crossed
