    I was born in 1954, and we sang this song when I was in grammar school. This song makes my heart smile.😇

    We sang this in grammar school in the 70’s during an assembly. My school celebrated Arbor Day. I remember drawing trees and having so much fun that day.

    Patti Page does beautiful work of a beautiful poem....
    But as a "wonna be artist" like me....
    this poem has seriously put a stop to my artist hand.
    To me this poem reaches out on so many different angles.
    A few years back I had a devastating experience that changed my thinking on a great many things. I had witnessed something that was in this world, that Id never saw before.... I am no longer such a "luke warm Christian," and I still have much to learn.
    GOD (the one true creator of heaven and earth) created all.... As the POEM here states.... "I think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree".... Yes, I too, feel that humbleness... Tree's are beautiful, trees are life... There are SO MANY references to a tree, or trees, in the Bible. Trees are also a metaphor for man in the Bible, and a timeline to when to look for the second coming, etc.. There is so much in reference to a tree.... Even our own body parts are referenced from a tree,... trunk, limbs, crown.... Much of life IS shown to us through nuances and symbolism. All we need do is look up and see. But as God our only Father has made, so does his adversary like to copy and steel his many good and beautiful works. The devil, is a copycat. A thief in the dark.
    So... if perhaps Mr. Joyce kilmer says that he "shall never see, a poem lovely as a tree..." I take this to mean that the artist is paying the most humble of beautiful respect and thanks to the Lord our God for what he has created of us, and for us... -As, HOW could ANY ARTIST top the works of God, our great creator. I believe in my heart that this poem is a great work of "thank you" to God. It brings me to tears so many times when I read, or hear this poem.... because it goes so deep for me... the gratitude, the many works of God, the humbleness, the metaphor, and learning of symbolism (good and bad) all around us on a daily basis, ...All the beauty through Love that God gave us. How wonderful the place of Eden must have been....and how much we have destroyed it through our many transgressions...
    As a ..."want to be artist" myself,... I struggle with bringing my hand to work... -as I also feel " I shall never see" ART "lovely as a tree." How can any man improve on the works of God? 😔

    Joyce Kilmer, he enlisted in the New York National Guard and was deployed to France with the 69th Infantry Regiment (the famous "Fighting 69th") in 1917. He was killed by a sniper's bullet at the Second Battle of the Marne in 1918 at the age of 31. He was married to Aline Murray, also an accomplished poet and author, with whom he had five children.

      His full name was Alfred Joyce Kilmer. Some silly authors would sometimes erroneously refer to Joyce as a 'she' since Joyce has since been used by parents to name their daughters.

    Wanting to listen to poetry while driving, I decided to look up my favorite poem on RUclips. I can't believe I never knew my favorite poem had been turned into a song, with many renditions at that! (Although I should have known, it's such an obviously good choice for poetry inspired music). I'm quite pleasantly surprised.
    I remember in 8th grade, Ms. Caruso took pity on myself and one other girl who had an aversion to the dissections we were to do in our science class. She excused us from the dissection, and offered an alternative assignment. To my rather pleasant surprise, the alternative assignment had nothing really to do with science, but rather handed the both of us different poems. We were to write reports on the authors of these poems. Being a fan of literature, who later went on to major in English, I was quite happy with this assignment.
    What I didn't anticipate was finding one of my life long favorite poems. (And I am a rather huge fan of poetry, with many poetry books that adorn my shelves and notebooks that I've filled with my own).
    So to Ms. Caruso, thank you for the gift of poetry, for strengthening my love and interest in the art at such an impressionable age. (And not forcing me to do that dissection, many other teachers were quite mean and cutthroat in that regard.)
    And to Alfred Joyce Kilmer, thank you for one of the most beautiful poems mankind has ever seen. It has stood the test of time. Because beauty of nature and it's wonderment is timeless itself. I'm not a religious woman, but the line "poems are written by fools like me, but only God can make a tree" has always resonated with me.
    Oh! And to the person who posted this rendition of the song: thank you! It's quite possibly the most beautiful version to ever be recorded.

    I think that I shall never see
    A poem lovely as a tree.
    A tree whose hungry mouth is prest
    Against the earth's sweet flowing breast;
    A tree that looks at God all day,
    And lifts her leafy arms to pray;
    A tree that may in summer wear
    A nest of robins in her hair;
    Upon whose bosom snow has lain;
    Who intimately lives with rain.
    Poems are made by fools like me,
    But only God can make a tree.
