Thanks for your review. Waiting for my shipment to delivered. Cant wait! I may have overkilled and ordered 3. I definitely want 2 to mesh. I have a very old house with plaster walls. I may sell the other one to a friend.
Hey added point for people want to mesh network Aliens together - I read at AmpliFi site that two full Alien router units (one in bridge mode) only works IF both units are wired together. Bridge mode does not work wirelessly like the Mesh unit does. Unless that changed since AmpliFi's webpage, this should be amended to your recommendation about paying a little more to add a second router (with a status screen) instead of a less capable mesh unit. That won't work as recommended, unless you have a fully wired house, and a direct line to your second unit upstairs. You might want to double check and confirm this. I almost bought 2 routers on your recommendation (it made sense), but for me that would not have worked. Thank goodness I double checked on the Amp site. I need the second mesh unit to be wireless.
Thank you for the video. I’m wondering if you get two Aliens (not the mesh) will both screens show the same thing? I want to be able to monitor my network from my desk where my ISP connection is not.
Tomas, very informative video. I am on the market for a new router. After seeing how you are using it and your experience, it looks like I found my new router. Thank you🤙🏽
Very informative review. I just bought one. Do you think I should be able to use this router with the new modem from optimum 1gig fiber plan?! I am hoping to get the full potential for the speed I’m paying from the 1Gig optimum fiber plan.
Good and informative review! You covered more things than most Alien reviews I’ve watched while being very concise. Did you end up using two routers versus one and a satellite? Curious how that is working if you did and do both screens show the exact same info? Thanks!
I never ended up doing the mesh system with this. I went full crazy and got some Ubiquiti equipment and migrated over to UniFi. Thanks for the comment 👍
Well this router is $380 but there's only a few devices on the market that utilize wifi 6 right now (like the iphone 11) and NO you Cannot just "bring your router along and get wifi" you need to plug the router to a modem that has an internet plan with it... if you want something you can bring along with you and get internet for your devices on-the-go look into what a "hotspot" is
I bought the Alien and returned it. The company is very reputable, but unless you are very tech savvy, it will cause hours of problems with wired Ring devices and TP link plugs for Alexa. You must set up additional SSID's and match each item with the appropriate one. Not for the average homeowner. The range was fantastic, but so much didn't work without labor intensive study.
That’s interesting I have a ton of Alexa devices and lamps connected. In addition, I have a vivint smartphone and nest thermostat connected. Does that mean that I will to setup separate SSIDs for each device or will this just connect to them as my normal router does. Why do you need separate SSIDs for smart home devices if they are just connecting to your router? Did they say?
Can you set it up on "access point mode" instead of a router mode? I want to allow my current modem to do the routing, but I'm looking for solid wifi. I am debating between 3 of these aliens or just the TP link deco x60
is the Synology connected to the Router with wire or wifi? the copy speed is too low just 8-10 MB? usually, it's 100+ on 1GB ethernet that means on wifi connection it's just 10 times slower?
It's managed through a switch that I have limits on. This is normal and works well for documents. I have it this way because I have a 10Gbe connection on the Synology that I want to make sure has enough CPU resources to feed it.
@@TomasVillegas hey Tomas… I just bought the 👽 and the ASUS Axe11000 6E. Trying to figure out which one I should keep. Tbh the speeds in the 👽 are beats! Do you still use the alien and what’s your take on it having had it a year now?
@@TomasVillegas I just installed my new alien, I'm very disappointed, I have 1 gig, I'm getting the same speeds as I was getting on my stock isp router that they gave me, even my iPhone 12 pro max is at slow speeds, I'm getting 176 mbps, I don't understand why
Note that when the AmpliFi router is in bridge mode it is not acting as a router anymore and will lose its routing capabilities, no longer offering these features: Hardware NAT UPnP VLAN ID DHCP Server Port Forwarding Family Profiles QoS DNS
@@TomasVillegas so if you are buying two routers and planning to use second router as a mesh point and doesn’t want to loose any of the above mentioned features, how do you go about it? Would we be better off buying their router and mesh package?
I absolutely love this router. It’s everything I could have hoped for
Me too. I can't wait to get fiber and put this thing to work 👍
@@TomasVillegas one question does it work better with fiber ? In your house ??
Great idea on the buying the two router units and have one as a satellite, instead of getting the bundle. Thanks for the review, Tomas!
Thanks for watching and commenting. 🤝
Yes very good idea, think I will copy that.

Yeah you'll definitely want two of your walls are that dense. This system has been really awesome and I think you'll like it too.

100% agree about Nest Wifi being underwhelming. I'd much rather have the old LAN ports and/or Wifi 6 than Google Assistant on the access points.
I had to move away as soon as I saw the update. Plus no Wifi 6 😞
Excellent review Tomas!
Thanks for the feedback Jasen 🤝

Yes it will push fiber speeds easily. It is a heck of a router. 👍
@@TomasVillegas Thanks! I am getting speed of 700 mbps on my iPhone 11. This is awesome!
Did you found a replacement for the data usage tracking that the google wifi had?

Yea its me here just wondering on whts the cost to get tht new wifi 6 and can a person take tht router with them and carrie it around in the city

Manuel Lemus I haven't had any issues with my smart home gear. Ally stuff works just fine.

Great video by the way keep up the great work

Yes you can add multiple Alien to a mesh setup: help.amplifi.com/hc/en-us/articles/360016183893-Adding-AmpliFi-Standalone-Devices-as-Mesh-Points
Hi Thomas, Do you have any experience in copying files from Nas over wifi & can give an idea of files copy speed if using such good wifi mesh?
Yeah it works great for me. I talked about that in this video 👍

Looks like a nice setup. My Eero seems to work ok, but is underwhelming. Thanks for this.
I'm sure that system will be good to go for a couple more years. Thanks for the comment. 🤝

Does it come with a fire extinguisher if not it should because it may catch on fire it's running at 143° that's pretty ridiculous.
No. It's fine.
Have you done the review with fiber on the alien?
I haven't, I can say that it held up really well. I upgraded to a full UniFi system though.

Can we use sim card, or just cable?
Just a cable.
So have you moved to that Fiber yet? Any new thoughts?
I have and it held up well until I switched to a full UniFi system. 👍

Hey great review!!! How's this holding up 3 weeks later!
It's been in my home for almost 2 months and I love it. I'm going to get another one soon. 👍
@@TomasVillegas Same here!
Is it true it doesn’t support WPA3 security?
This is true. From what I've read they're interested in building out Wifi 6.
Note that when the AmpliFi router is in bridge mode it is not acting as a router anymore and will lose its routing capabilities, no longer offering these features:
Hardware NAT
UPnP
VLAN ID
DHCP Server
Port Forwarding

Does it support Link aggregation?
It doesn't currently. But I believe there's a feature request for it.
Tomas Villegas ok thx
we have all the amplifi products in australia and still they didnt release the amplifi alien yet !
That sucks. Hopefully they bring it to y'all soon.

Can I use a ps4 with this?
Yes.
Tomas Villegas so it’s basically plug & play? Thanks appreciate the reply! Just need good internet to play online games with the ps4. Thanks again!
hold up, they removed the ethernet ports, wtf? That's bassackwards lol
I think so too. The mesh point bus basically a dummy unit 😅
