I had the chance to measure and time align some Funktion one stuff with alpass filters and actually choosing correct bandwidth and highpass that don’t cause the driver to beam its a very good sounding
Been to Digital, Newcastle a few times. They must run it badly, which is a shame. Definitely get's worse towards the end of the night as the levels creep up. Distortion seems to be everywhere. I've yet to leave a club without that horrible ringing in the ears. I really enjoy Tony's interviews - says it like it is.
Well funktion one as a system is like a very precisely engineered engine. You put the wrong fuel in it and it will run like crap, you shift gears unproperly and you will not use its full potential. It's such a complex system it needs lots of knowledge and experience to get it sound right, especially since it has very minimal processing required (delay, eq, etc.). If you add processing to the system then it has to be precise and minimal, otherwise you just deteriorate the sound. Another thing is whatever is done before the sound gets to the soundsystem has to be taken into account, if a DJ is redlining the mixer or uses shitty mp3 downloaded from god knows where then any soundsystem would sound like crap.
