Hard to watch this. It's not just her disability, it's the strength of her reaction. She's screaming and crying so hard that she can barely breathe. It's feels so real. It really is heart wrenching. This is what they mean when they say it felt like the world had ended. For her, it really had.
Lewis wasn't that good, especially in this scene. Ribisi was astonishing and should have won the Oscar. But the legendary Michael Caine was Best Supporting instead.
As much as I felt bad for her, I still really felt bad for him, he didn't understand even the average person doesn't just announce those things on stage like that. He probably thought he was just telling everyone how much they loved each other (especially if he was drinking, mixed with what he has) he probably didn't realize there was going to be a negative reaction.
Carla's dad is such a kind and gentle man. He's not stuck up and rude to Daniel like the mom. I always liked his character the most, even more than Carla and Dan.
I could never understand why critics were so disappointed in this film. I thought that Giovani Ribisi and Juliette Lewis did a phenomenal job in acting in this film.
Robert Ebert said the film was "shameless in its use of mental retardation as a gimmick, a prop and a plot device." Those were his exact words. Of course, I thought this movie was brilliant!
I have very high functioning autism and that’s why my dad recommended me to this movie. I loved it. I’m glad Daniel and Carla got back together after this happened later on!
@Jessica Catareia umm sweetie I am very aware that the two actors are NOT handicapped. This is actually one of my favorite movies. Two, obviously the comment to whom I was responding to isn’t there. Three, last time I check I have a right to voice my opinion, I may could’ve used better choice of words but that doesn’t mean I can’t speak my point of view. Four, you must really be bored out of your mind because I’ve never responded to your comment a MONTH AGO, to a comment I said a YEAR AGO? Why are you wanting to talk more to me again? Be blessed 💯🙏🏾❤️
@Jessica Catareia Also if you have to feel “ defensive” of my rebuttal to your comment then maybe having serious discussions isn’t your forte. That’s fine. I’m all for a good debate but only if both parties are able to listen and understand one another. If one person can’t then the point is lost. 💯

I absolutely love this movie since I was ten and I I'm 35 now!! Absolutely love the dads love for Carla!!! He got up fast and he didn't even wanna send her to that place the mother did when she was younger!! Brilliant movie and acting!!!
I saw this movie as a kid and this scene was always so upsetting to me. There’s nothing I hate more than seeing someone humiliated, and I felt for Carla in that moment, especially being laughed at her whole life. And poor Daniel not realizing that what he said wasn’t a good thing and not knowing how to handle his fear of her family with no one else there to support him. I know people critiqued this movie a lot but I’ve always loved it and the ending. 💕
I've always been abhorred by ignorance and people who treat the physically and mentally disabled people like shit.. I'll always remember the mentally challenged couple that lived in my area.. They were the only ones (coupled that is), and they weren't the smartest people.. What I remember most about them when I picked them up walking home was how generously kind they were, and how much they loved each other.. That's all that really matters in this world.
I love your comment! You're defending people with autism like me! People with autism deserve boyfriends and girlfriends like everyone else! My autism is very high functioning though so I'm thankful for that. But people have sometimes treated me cruelly because they didn't understand me which always pissed me off.
Thing about this scene is, they weren’t laughing at them because they were disabled, but because they so flagrantly trespassed upon forbidden social norms and decorum. Perhaps the way Daniel expressed it was amusing, but their laughter wasn’t meant to demean them. They were fully respectful until he crossed the line into brutal, hilariously embarrassing territory.

What I loved about this scene is someone could easily laugh and at the same time, someone easily could cry or at least be saddened and not crack a smile.
The reason why I say "laugh" is because I've watched this movie several times and the younger ones (around my age) thought the scene where Daniel blows up, was funny.
I have to admit seeing Carla cry like that and Daniel getting angry the way he did when he was apologizing for his actions is just so heartbreaking. Just think this happens between boyfriends and girlfriends all the time, getting drunk, yelling at each other, break ups and other things. I always wish all couples could be perfect and never fight.
Looking at these comments, Everyone is confused and have absolutely no clue about this movie. I didn't laugh not one time while watching this movie. I watched this movie when I was much younger. I'll never forget this movie. Very gifted actors!
+LaLunaa. we don't use the word retarded anymore it's now called an intellectual disability. I always thought that's the word retarded was cruel and nasty I like intellectual disability better then the word retarded I always hated that word.
Barrett Brown Leave politics out of this. Plus that “ SJW” shit is old and tired. You don’t have to be a “SJW” to know when not to be an insensitive asshole.
I don’t understand why people laughed. They all look about 40... big deal they had sex why is that funny? Lol I understand it’s a movie and it’s acting but I personally wouldn’t find something like this funny in real life. This scene definitely shows the great acting skills that these two both have. They did an amazing job.
I think they were laughing at them "doing it" because the both of them are special needs. And they probably knew that he was drunk when he announced that. Also, because the people laughing are not nice. I grew up watching this movie because I have special needs myself and I relate to it so much. And I love this movie.
My little cousin has the same disability he is still young and when he grows up I hope he can take care of himself. I love him every every much and I hope he grows up as a great person

How did Lewis and Ribisi not get Oscars for their performances? They were amazing!
What 🤨
Because American Beauty sweeped up all the awards that year.
Lewis got a razzie nomination, and should've won. Their acting in this movie is unintentionally hilarious!
I say the same thing everytime I watch this movie. They are amazing actors!
