      Nice!!!!!! THANK YOU!!!!! I've never seen a non-threaded zero fitting (or anything else for that matter) with the little ribs for pressing in. Where can I get them????

  • @hogsandsooners

    Keep in mind that a grease gun exerts in about 7,000 psi, which makes it very easy to damage seals. This, in turn, will allow dirt, water and other contaminants to get into the gear box. In this application, the manufacturer's method would be the preferable one. Also, never drive a grease insert by striking it on the end.

    • @f9qo
      @f9qo 2 года назад +4

      For sure, banging the fitting in with a hammer is dumb....better to press the zerk fitting in with a vise that has jaw inserts that won't damage the fitting.

    Being a machinist like myself I would have put a threaded pipe thread fitting in it instead of the tap in fitting.
    Its a wonder by you tapping on top of the fitting the grease gun snapped on the grease fitting.
    I would have put a piece of hollow tubing over the fitting just so it fit over the fitting down to the hex part of the grease fitting.
    Should have used a copper hammer instead of a steel hammer to tap the fitting in the hole,lol

I have a stihl FS-250R, stihl KM-94R and Husqvarna 525L and all three gear heads will be modified exactly like this. All three trimmers belt out ALOT of power and torque and don't want to cook gears with the very high rpms that these machines produce.

      I use a flush method. Take out the plug, flush the old grease out with degreaser, then fill it most of the way back up with the grease gun using the Zerk. Check it once to make sure it isn't overfull after rotating the gears and I don't have to mess with stupid gimmicky grease tubes of inferior grease.

    You can just wrap the threads and put the bolt in the vise just barely tight. This way the bolt head sits on top of the vise, and you aren't relying on the tightness of the vise to hold your workpiece ( avoiding deeply scratching the bolt head).

    I have a trimmer and edger with similar set up for lubrication. Did you try to find a grease zerk that would screw in in place of the plug? Also the is the possibility of pushing the seals around the shafts with good strong grease gun.

    • @billwilson3665
      @billwilson3665 3 года назад +2

    For something that only needs grease every 25 hours of operation at most, I don't really see a need for a "time saving" zerk fitting. Of course I don't really know how quick these things rack up 25 hours when being used commercially.
    Either way you now need to be careful not to over grease and pressurize the housing. I'm not really convinced that this was necessary or even worthwhile , but hey, you do you. Seems to me that the tube being threaded to fit the hole already made the process pretty darn convenient and it was impossible to over pressurize the part that way. Since my personal machine only needs the grease checked once a year, in my case this process would take a lifetime to save time "in the long run" 🤣
    If it's been working out for you over the past 4 years, then great! And if not, it was a learning experience.

    • @stevengandt1507
      @stevengandt1507 4 года назад

      I had a similar thought when watching the drilling. While WD-40 will work, an even better option is something called cutting oil. It’s specifically formulated to lubricate metal-on-metal drilling and to direct heat away from the drilling surface. It’s inexpensive, and you can find it at your local hardware store, or at the Land of the Orange Apron.
      If you’re doing occasional, small-scale metal-on-metal drilling, WD-40 is a fine option. If you’re doing this more often, or if you have a larger drilling job that will generate a lot of heat and friction, cutting oil is the way to go.

      Andrew Wilding you might have seen a vid that said that but IMO another grease with the same properties would work just fine.

    That’s a great idea really. Until you go to back that bolt out someday when the fitting fails and half the drilled bolt end up in the gear box. Otherwise that’s awesome.

      Justin Mullet what happens when someone smashed a zerk with a hammer and the ball and spring end up in the gears. Had one fail like that on a new u-joint and that was without the hammering.

      It's a half inch bolt, as well, so it is easily removed without drilling.

    Loosening a small nut 3-4 times a yr if used commercially and once a yr or longer for regular use is VERY cumbersome and time consuming. Then the pain staking time spent twisting on those handy little grease tubes is just unbearable.......
    Honestly though I can see how people see others doing this and think "wow I wanna be cool too" but I've never drank the kool-aid. If you really wanna do your trimmer a service about once a yr take the head off, pop the seal, and proceed to push out any old grease when you put in the new. Also if I were ever to do this I think I'd just go threaded instead of tap.

      If you want to use a threaded Zerk you would have to do that with a tap.

    Good tip, is the Stihl grease any different from what is in your grease gun

    • @deecee2837

      Yes. It is much more expensive per oz.

    Can you use like an all purpose grease or white grease instead of the stihl brand one?

    I hope that your gears fail on the trimmer and that Stihl does not honor the warranty. If it was a good idea to replace that bolt with a zerk fitting, Stihl would have done it in the factory!

    • @chuckmason7930
      @chuckmason7930 2 года назад +1

      The Stihl heads are made so the excess grease runs into the shaft. This advice given here is poor because the right grease zerk can be found to match factory threads.

    • @charlesbrown205
      @charlesbrown205 Год назад

      @@chuckmason7930 This is true. Pump in the good grease once a season and clean up the bad grease from the shaft end (requires removing two screws). Also, you can fill the gearbox with the Stihl tube just as easily -- just don't overfill it. The advantage of the Zerk fitting is that you don't have to buy expensive Stihl grease tubes. I just use Lucas red Tacky from my grease gun - one grease means no soap incompatibility problems.

    Why dont they come with zerks?

    • @bigtexas7580

      Because not everyone has a grease gun.

      Because to much grease is a bad thing. If its got to much grease it will run hot. Besides that you keep pumping grease in it and eventually you will blow your seal out. Its got to go somewhere.

      Stihl wants you to buy their screw on mini cartridges. Which don't fit other brands.
