This is one of the best yet. I didn't know there was additional depth to this character on the cutting room floor. What's more though is understanding that Thranduil's arc ending more tragically serves the story so much better than shoehorning in a bit of fan service. Well done yet again!

Great idea to add the Gandalf/Thranduil scene! I love how you're able to resurrect character moments that make some of the details a bit more relevant to the plot!
I don't understand how Peter Jackson cut so many great scenes that add depth to the characters, and yet he couldn't get enough of Alfrid's dumb shenanigans, adding EVEN MORE of him in the EE. A character that should've died at Smaug's rampage of laketown. Did they really LIKE Alfrid? The guy is the Jar Jar Binks of Middle-earth, for crying out loud!

PJ didn't hsve full control over the story. The studios -- aka the people funding the films -- had a lot of say, and they rushed him besides. They should've given him more time and full trust, given that he's already proven to be very good at his job when actually allowed to do it. But they thought they knew better (apparently mistaking themselves for experienced directors and producers, and the LotR-verse for the Twilight or Hunger Games 'verses or something) and it was they that pushed the love triange and the 'humour' of Alfric into the story, among other things. Not PJ.

    Great edits!
I think these additions could make sense as part of the theatrical cut too, actually.
In order to give casual viewers the best experience, the theatrical cuts still need to provide pay-offs to the major character arcs - and Thranduil, one of the most important characters of the trilogy, doesn't really have an ending in the theatrical cut. Neither does Legolas, really. The "I cannot go back" scene would provide great catharsis for them both.
Plus, these scenes are really quite short, so adding them to the theatrical cut wouldn't make it too long (And really, if any movie should be longer, it's BoTFA. The final movie in a trilogy SHOULD be the longest, generally). And they're all dialogue scenes, not fight scenes - so they would actually fit really well into the dynamic balance of BoTFA, which generally has too many fight scenes.

      @@ChrisHartwell Hey Chris,
In one of your earlier videos you explained that you decided to remove the scene where Bard discovers who Thorin really is the ''prophecy of Durin's Folk'' I completley understand why you'd cut that scene out. However in that scene a new musical theme is introduced ''The House of Durin'' And because they introduced that theme here it didn't come out of knowhere, when they played a beautifull yet haunting rendition of it, after they discover that they can't escape out of Erebor and eventually decide to kill the dragon.
But in the extended edition there is a scene where alfrid tells the master ''people in the streets are saying a king will return to the lonely mountain'' in the background you can hear an even lighter and more majestic yet small rendition of the House of Durin. But because it's such an important musical theme through out the movie I wanted to know your opinion for the fact, that you removed it's glorious introduction in "the Prophecy of Durin's Folk"

@@themastrelmatadordelmar544 Haha! I feel as if I've read this _three times_ now ;)
Yes, I did indeed remove that section for pacing reasoning in my *Theatrical Cut* but it (and the scene with the Master counting his gold) will be restored in my *Extended Edition* :)

@@ChrisHartwell Yeah, sorry about that. I wasn't quitte sure, if the reaction was posted or not (as sometimes when you edit your reaction, it sometimes just doesn't show up at all, and it appears that the reaction has been deleted) But yeah I was just curious, about a small musical theme that Howard Shore used to represent the Line of Durin. And whether or not it's removal had any impact when watching the cut (and with that I mean the musical theme, not the scene itself)
