    My daughter and I bought a restored machine just like this, but with different decals. Your video is so very thorough and clear. Thank you very much for doing such a wonderful job at teaching us how to maintain this beautiful machine!

    Thank you so much for making this video, and what a beautiful machine! My main machine is a 1958 185k, a mint-green straight stitch dream machine that I purchased for $23 a few years ago. But I'm about to pick up a 1910 28k similar to this (hopefully later today) and I'm so excited to get it cleaned up and sewing again. I've always wanted a treadle machine, but don't have room for one in my house with roommates. But a handcrank seems like a perfect solution! We are but stewards to these machines, hopefully helping them to live and flourish for countless generations to come! Thanks for sharing your knowledge :)

      Hi Ella, congratulations for acquiring your machines. You are so right, we are mere custodians of them.

    Thank you for this very informative video. I have just purchased a 28 with hand crank in the portable bentwood case. The machine has not been cleaned for many years, but sewed juSt fine as soon as I threaded it up. Amazing. Fortunately the machine had been oiled before putting it away, and was kept dry and covered. I am anticipating much pleasure!

      Thank you Ben, have fun with your 28K they reall are stunning machines. These days I do less work on sewing machines because my health stops me from lifting and moving them. Instead I console myself with operating and mending vintage toy trains. There are several videos in my channel and you are welcome to have a look. I also have a facebook group which may well be of interest to you. here is the link for you to have a browse. ------------ facebook.com/groups/552816655107522/

      My mother was a seamstress all here life and the sound of her sewing machine a Singer 201K is still with me. The model 15 is still made in India and the one I use is a 1901/2 model, put an old 15 like mine with a new Indian made one and there is really no difference in performance.

    Thank you for this interesting and informative video! I just acquired my very first antique machine...a 1906 28K and this is all very good information! Your explanations are great, but your camera person could have got a bit closer look for us. That would have been nice, especially whilst you were demo'ing the stitches. But, all good! Thanks so much!!! Excited to get acquainted with my new machine, which came from England!

    recently just saved a 28K, been used hard but roared back to life in time for her 100th anniversary this Dec 24, 2018. We are going to bring her out and sew with a piece of real history. Switching her back over to hand crank, truly enjoy sewing with her name is "Alma" after my great Grandmother.

      Yours is a 28K, made in the Kilbowie factory, Clydebank. Scotland. The batch that your number is in was issued to the factory from July - December 1900. That batch was for 130,000 machines with the serial numbers in the batch from 206325 to 336234, so yours was made in the last 10% or so of that batch. The next batch of numbers for the 28K was issued to the factory from January-July 1901 and was a batch for 120,000 machines. So yours was probably made in 1900 or really early 1901. Queen Victoria died on 22 January 1901 so yours is a "true Victorian" machine. :-D Can you imagine the rate of production in that factory? They were pumping out thousands and thousands of machines of other models through that time as well. Source: ISMACS database of Singer serial numbers and a bit of number-crunching and historical research on Google.

    Hello Ive just got a Audrey to restore can you tell me the best thing to use to remove the rust of all the silver bits and pieces

    • @sewingman1
      @sewingman1  5 лет назад

      Hi Clarise, most of the bright metal work can be cleaned and made to shine by using the very finest grade wet and dry you can find. To finish off use a good piece of good soft leather, an old piece of leather belt is perfect. Using plenty of liquid metal polish is ideal. I did say `most` bright metal because there is a chance some inspection plates are chromed, and if they are rusted nothing will work except for a professional re chrome.
      Hope this helps, Richard.

    I think this machine's needle is threaded from left to right. If not, when was it changed?

    • @manateeka
      @manateeka 6 лет назад

      He used a threading aid which was inserted from the right. The thread was put through its loop on the left of the needle and pulled it through the eye from left to right.

    Can you please advise me. I have a 1906 28k vs sewing machine. I have managed to wind my bobbin and installed it into the shuttle and the thread appears to pull through ok and holds when you hold it up. I have threaded the machine ready to sew following your video but when I go to sew the thread from the bobbin and the topstitch do not engage. It connects through when I first start off but then there are no stitches just a length of thread both underneath and on top. What am I doing wrong. I have tried adjusting the tension spring by turning the knob on front but it doesn’t seem to have any difference?

    Hi, I very much loved your video thank you, I also have the exact same machine handed down to me by my grandmother. Can I ask please should I look at selling, what is the value of this machine? Thank you

    • @sewingman1
      @sewingman1  4 года назад +2

      I cannot give you a valuation Jenny. Certainly sell it if you must but ask yourself - where could I get another one if I ever needed to. Once you have sold it you will have money, but not a lot. In two years time you will have forgotten where you spent the money and the sewing machine will be gone forever, maybe along with precious memories of your grandmother.
