- We used Artificial Intelligence to design a kitchen for Kim Raver. My background is in architecture so when I signed on as an advisor to SKIPP I was a little skeptical about how AI could be used to design home renovation projects. This NY Kitchen renovation for Kim Raver really sold me and in this video I will explain the process and how SKIPP renovation platform works. I have been hearing for a while that in the future artificial intelligence will be able to do architectural designs and while we are not all the way there yet the future may be closer than you think.

I don't see how this is AI. It's just a kitchen simulator with attached price lists. It would really help if people used this term more discriminately. Also, apart from the fact that they properly scan your room, Ikea Kitchen Designer has been doing similar things for years now, including fairly decent renders of how it's going to look with price lists of what exactly it's going to cost. The fact that this can still be sold as revolutionary tells more about how kitchen companies still work (because people let them get away with this) and less about the advancement of technology.
I love that it wasn't just a tool dropped on the masses to design their own thing, but that there are templates from actual designers as starting points. I can even see "signed" collabs with custom pieces loaded up, like "HMM x SKIPP" where you have a room built around one of your pieces and there's only X number of them available.
Really great work you're doing, Ben.
2 minutes in and I’m already fascinated. I work in commercial construction and we use a Matterport for documenting progress, especially with keeping track of in-wall electrical and plumbing rough-in. Super cool to see how it’s being implemented in other areas and being integrated with estimating.
Matterports where the game changer and can do incredible stuff!
Next iteration could be cutlist to the custom cabinet shop?
Any potential roadmap where this becomes more of a desktop app that will take all your parameters and provide design options for DIYers that aren't necessarily designers or don't have that higher-mid-range budget? With the improvement of AR on phones, it's becoming easier to scan rooms from your pocket. Apple is doing some cools stuff with RoomKit, but it would only provide a canvas. I love the idea of AI providing concepts based on those scans. Keep up the great work!
Great job Ben! 👏😁 The kitchen looked beautiful and you seemed really comfortable on camera. AI and kitchen design, that's an interesting concept.
Thanks so much! 😊
Very interesting...good ideas !
Sounds like a great idea! I have trouble deciding when given to many choices. I would make the worst client for sure! Thanks for sharing. ❤️
I'm a residetial GC who would be interested in this service for new builds based off of existing construction documents vs a scan of the existing space. I work with a local cabinet retailer who will design your space for free on the speculation you'll buy a cabinet and countertop package. They do a great job, but I'd never ask for 10 design options due to the labor involved on their end.
I'd be willing to pay for access just to see lots of layout and finish options if it could be done off of plans. Clearly not your current business model, but it could make sense as an option or parallel track in the future.
Cool tech.
I’m going to check it out. I’ll see how far I get. I’m curious what get from the renderings. Im curious if it helps me with measurements so I can shop for my own appliances and fixtures. So many companies will do it all but you have to use their tile, appliances, lighting and fixtures. Perhaps the renderings will give me more confidence when finding a GC.
It seems like Skipp is making design firms more accessible (and affordable) to the every day home owner. Skipp is disrupting the marketplace which is good for consumers. It would be very interesting to have different tiers that connect to even more affordable pieces, say from IKEA, regional furniture stores, or even furniture at Target and Wal-Mart. It would give a lot of options while using the same technology.
When I moved into my new apartment, I struggled to find a service that allowed me to map out my new floor plan and place my furniture in it. Again, something Skipp could take advantage of. You may not need a laser scanner for exact measurements to do simple furniture layout, but being able to create a floor plan by taking photos in strategic areas would be a significant value add.
Completely agree here
This is so great! i hope its easier to use that the ikea software 😄
Fascinating stuff. Google mapped the world, which company is going to scan the world? Mahalo for sharing! : )
yes!
This would be an amazing fun series of you renovating celebrities apartments, hope it's not a one time thing! Really enjoy Kim and her work too so was happy to see her here :)
I hope not. I have 0 interest in celebrities. I liked this one off episode though. New technique used in practice. And she is a great actress. :)
This is cool! Do you have any concerns that it will become cookie cutter/ multiple choice design. Is there a way to add additional inputs to the AI to keep it's design eye fresh?
good question! I would say the reason so many houses are cookie cutter now is that organizing custom choice is time consuming. this makes it cheaper to get custom design
Some serious potential in your work. Loved the work......Would you be interested in Advertising
Won’t it be cool if Skipp can also work out energy efficiency with layout and materials used, how placing a room there will affect air conditioning here, how much more light you get by adding a window, and so on
This sounds fantastic! I'm excited for the potential of this concept. Your excitement is obvious as well. Great job and look forward to more updates.
There should have been a big advertisement disclaimer right in the beginning!
Skipp didn't pay me for this and I disclosed my advisory role.
Even if it was, Skipp sounds fantastic. This is exciting stuff :)
@@HomeMadeModern You have your own designs on Skipp as you have mentioned. However my point is, if you paint Skipp in a favorable light and you have a stake in the company's financial well-being, then this should have been made clear at the very start of the video! Skipp is also the first link in the description box. So there is clearly an affiliation. According to RUclips's regulations those have to be disclosed!
This is cool
what is the name of this ai?
Is the website down?
God forbid they let that kitchen look lived in.
it looked lived in before but they wanted something different
Having worked in project management and scheduling, and having designed my own home, which came out pretty much the way I wanted it, I'm curious what the timelines are. So for Kim, how long between when she contacted Skipp and when any actual changes to her apartment began. Also, how long between start of construction to completion? I realize these are incident specific questions, but I'm curious about the time reduction aspect. Especially from an ordering/just-in-time-delivery perspective. I'm sure that current supply chain issues are screwing everyone over right now, but if we got back to pre-COVID ordering/delivery timelines, how much better could this technique make the whole process go?
Some quality content, super informative! Thank you!
Afortunadamente este tipo de intrusismo laboral esta regulado en Europa. Que no os engañen, esto es básicamente lo que haría un arquitecto normal y corriente. Eso de que solo se hace en los proyectos grandes es falso.
This looks awesome! Is there any future plans to expand into bathroom remodels?
That skipp is really cool but looks really expensive.
Damn, this is the future
12:50 "...what AI can't do is invent the new product... create a real custom design..." Isn't that exactly what differentiates AI from conventional computing? Check out GPT-3 creativity. Sounds like Skipp is a computer program arranging existing building blocks within a defined area. Yes, I'm being critical of the use of the term "AI" but I clicked to see AI and I don't a lot of AI (maybe highlight that). That said, it's a great idea. Input room dimensions, other desirable attributes, click button => new design, click button => another design, click button => another design... Masco, are you watching?
Couldn't agree more! I can't stand people misusing terms like AI. This is nothing more than a gigantic catalog that takes what you sort and automatically calculates things. Is it a great software? Hell yes! Would I use it? Absolutely. Is there any "artificial intelligence" used anywhere in this? of course not.
we need renogpt
its coming!
Ohhh, I've been waiting for you to do a video on your new company!! I was so intrigued when you launched some time back
Hope you enjoyed it!
Hello, I'm a Product Designer, I'm Standardizing the manufacture of a CNC Router, to automate the production process of Planned Furniture, I don't have any experience with Planned Furniture, but I have experience in several projects... I want to master the process to create beautiful environments and fast with router... Some suggestion, a pity I don't speak English! Where can I find this equipment that takes all measurements automatically
matterport
Spectacular work Ben, you’re awesome! I’m really glad to see the high powered computer capabilities we have today being applied to construction/renovation in this manner.
Much appreciated!
I’m here for Audrey.
Also why does Ben in this video look like he could be on a strike force team with Jack on his way to save Audrey.
Can Skipp be used in Europe or just limited to the states
in the states for now
Kim?!?!
I didn’t see a chair being made so i skip all the way at the end.
lol
Trim your beard teen wolf 🐺
i love u kimmy ☹️💗
My husband is a machine learning scientist, and I am an environmentalist woodworking hobbyist, and both of us are super excited about the future of AI in design and production, albeit for different reasons. Only downside is still dealing with contractors (here in DC especially) who will always be over budget and over time, and any money saved in the design process / materials will be spent in the construction. Programming robot builders would be a welcome addition to the process :)
It looks great, and it's a cool technology, but I do feel like it probably needs a sponsored tag.
Skipp didn't pay me for this and I disclosed my advisory role.
Advisor doesn't always mean unpaid. I think a pinned comment spelling that out would go a long way in keeping the video transparent.
The cooktop 100% should be in the island, I'd say a very bad design 🤨
different clients want different things. When design is a service it should serve the client
