  • The town of Sleepy Hollow received a new teacher, Ichabod Crane (Will Rogers), from New York. Crane already knows of the legend of the phantom Headless Horseman and is sceptical about its truth. His teacing methods are harsh and he no sooner rubs the villagers the wrong way when he begins to see the famous apparition.

I join the crowd who cheer this availability, and I agree with the notion that it be digitally restored. It was set in a year when some great- great-grandparents of Sleepy Hollow families might have been still living.

This film is set in 1790. A baby born that year would be age 132 when this film debuted in 1922.

I had never heard of this version of one of my favourite tales until I read about it this morning in Comedy-Horror Films: A Chronological History, 1914-2008 by Bruce G. Hallenbeck. Thanks for uploading it & allowing others to see this rare film.

One comment i heard about this is that while Ichabod crane was supposed to be a poor horseman it showed Will Rogers ability as a rider

I'm here mainly for that reason. Would love to see it restored properly. There's one shot that starts around 3:12 where the image is washed out for the first few seconds. I wonder if it's an artifact of not being completely developed: panchromatic film had to be developed in total darkness, and I wonder if they just didn't load the film in the tank wrong by accident.

@@AlanCanon2222 I've seen some recent restorations on RUclips of film shot in 1911 and it was eerie how lifelike old films can be made to appear. And this was with orthochromatic film. The historical significance of The Headless Horseman would make a good case for a restoration like that.

Out of all the chase scenes put on the screen, this one was closest to the book especially in how the chase was set up. That would have been great except for the way they ruined it by having Ichabod RUN AWAY and it outright showing Brom as the Headless Horseman. The writer/director completely missed the point, it's supposed to be completely ambiguous.

    • @JudgeJulieLit
      @JudgeJulieLit 5 лет назад +3

Actually "auteurial license" ... the writer/director may film his personal interpretive hypothesis.

StrongRex - Although its snobbishly vogue to trash the Disney version, which I love, they did keep the vagueness of Irving's written ending. The novel goes a step further though, stating that Icabod left the Van Tassel farm "with an air quite desolate and chopfallen...Oh these women!" . It would be wonderful to see this version restored and with a scene specific score.

I can't recall ever seeing this before but know the name Ichabod and Sleepy Hollow and the title. I don't remember what happened if I have seen it before.
Some people say a restored version would be nice but I think they lose that old charm, just like colourised films and pictures lose their authenticity.

  • @tyrssen1

It's a rather tedious film, but the final chase scene is rather cool. Its real merit is simply that it was the first film version ever made, with nothing else (that I know of) done until the 1949 animated Disney version. Worth a watch? Sure, but mostly for movie nuts like m'self, with an interest in old films in general.

Seth Tyrssen There was a 1930’s animated short of TLOSH made by I.B. Weeks over a decade before the 1949 Disney cartoon,
You can actually find it on RUclips, it’s interesting and well worth a look IMHO.

I think the ending is wrong, the film had to suggest that it was Bones to throw the pumpkin and do not show it like in the movie, partly because Ichabod was unlucky with the girl, you can not punish him much the protagonist, is not nice, narratively speaking

If you read the Irving story one is left wondering if it was Bram trying to scare him away and that Katrina was just play old Ichabod to make Bram jealous.

A grand effort, better than any of later years. Engrossing storytelling with a great insight into the early rural American, post-Revolution culture, dress, environment and education. I would love to see this movie cleaned up, properly colorized with appropriate music and some added dialogue slides or, with modern technology, actual synchronized voice-overs added.
