Astonishing. I love the play with language, the disruption of old tropes, the entering and dismantling of tired metaphors and their remaking into something exciting and powerful. Love also the echoes of Billie Holliday’s ‘Strange fruit’ but so uplifting with phrases like ‘Nurtured by many soils’ and ‘not the dead branches... bear different fruit’. An important Irish poet and voice, but unlike James Joyce, maybe she tells us that we don’t have to leave Ireland, as many us have done, to find and make the Ireland we want to belong to.
Joyce also reminds us that the difference between one and another in the 'same community' (perhaps mostly owing to his 'notions' and irresponsibility) can be bigger than that between someone from the in-group and an 'outsider.'
Gerry you must have had a few on you or be smitten by her good looks comparing her monologue to Joyce. I blame craft beer or perhaps simply under-education and a willingness to speak nonsense in middle age comfortably off males
Well, I’m past pension age I’m happy to say, and I can say this is one of the finest and most moving performances I have ever seen, made me think, made me laugh, fantastically powerful. Ireland is in safe hands.

The first time I heard this incredible, hearth-felt poem filled with pride of heritage as well as adopted one in Ireland I related so much I cried and smiled at the same time. Thank you Denise Chaila, keep writing and singing, you are so talented. I am a huge fan now :) Copper bullet has a line that is so empowering. Can't wait to hear even more content, you go girl!
This is inspirational. Can I just say this is up there phil lynott ever wrote and possibly beyond. And I'm 52 with listening to any amount of and types of music. Exceptional.
I just viewed your other voices performances on the TV tonight... I'm at a loss, why I haven't heard of you before now, because its aware your talent is immensely clear. In fact I'm totally blown away by you Denise.
Beautiful and really smart, great Irish-African Woman. I had fufu in Ghana, it's nice. It's a ball of casava (I think), it's made by pounding the casava. The women who make it are so strong! You have it in a soup.
I suppose then pun on 'pale' is not lost on most. Surprisingly perhaps, in places 'beyond the pale,' people just assume I'm from Dublin more so than people in Dublin, probably because they don't hear Dublin accents much and can't distinguish between them and certain American accents.
@@Charlie-zp2se It's confusing. When I was younger most people had regional Irish accents outside Dublin. Now most women (and many young men) everywhere have middle class Dublin accents... But the young Dubliners and younger girls nationwide now have (to my ears) American accents! Language change happens fast in this country. Two years ago I was still making the mistake of asking 'What part of the States' a young woman was from, now I just guess because fifty percent of the time it turns out they're Irish.
