Walking New Jersey's West Side Avenue in Jersey City (January 2022)

  • I walk on West Side Avenue in Jersey City, NJ for the first time from the Light Rail Station to Journal Square. I was surprised by how much shopping was available on the West Side. There was also plenty of car traffic on this street, and a local park named Lincoln Park with views of the Pulaski Skyway. This portion of Jersey City is very diverse, with people from all ethnic backgrounds.

    Man this means a lot to me. I grew up in San Diego but my whole family was from Jersey City and grew up on West side ave. My uncle owned a pub on this street called “Dohoneys” (half time now) (featured in Ghostdog with Forest Whitaker). Can see seen (black building red awning right hand side 26:12)
    I have extremely fond memories of this place!. The characters and the buzz of this place in the 80’s 90’s is nothing I will ever forget! Being from the west coast visiting here every summer was a culture shock x5.
    RIP uncle Faa… thanks for showing me this crazy place.

      I never went into Dohoney's, but passed it every day on my way to school at St. Al's. I want to thank the Dohoney's customer who must have had a hole in his pocket when he walked home. At least three time I was able to pick up enough change between Dohoney's & Fairview Avenue to get a Good Humor after school.

    Love it. I grew up on the West Side, Ege Ave., in the 1960s and 1970s. Where the mural was was my street you can see one of the schools I went to, Our Lady of Victories. At Virginia Ave. when you crossed the street was where my other school PS 24 was. Went to the Dairy Queen so many times. I walked to Lincoln Park virtually every day growing up. That playground you see in your video was very different. It was all concrete, there was a sprinkler for summer. The playground equipment wasn't very safe, you could get really injured on the slides and other stuff. I played football with my friends in a field there 50 years ago. I have images of these streets from 40-55+ years ago, I am 60 now. Thank you for a trip down memory lane. I like what my old neighborhood is like now. Thank you for this video.

    I grew up on Union St. right up the block from the Dairy Queen. Went to PS 33 down the block from Dairy Queen and then to PS 24 and walked the stretch of Westside Ave. every day between Union St. and Vriginia Ave. I also taught at St. Al's high school and was married in St. Al's church. Went to Lincoln Park all the time. This was the heart of my neighborhood. West Side Ave. played a major role in the first part of my life. This was all around 60 years ago So, this was a blow my mind nostalgia trip for me. Many thanks, ActionKi

    I played soccer in Lincoln Park when I was sure kid. There was a bar on the corner of West Side and Montgomery call O'Hara it was named after the on a crypt directly across the street. The crypt is no longer visible and the bar is long gone. Sip Ave..althought you are still on west side you are now in the Marion section. Once was a very large Italian community. The feast of Mt Carmel was a big thing.. Actually just about very parish had feast. Mt Carmel and Holy Rosery being two of the largest. Looks like a funeral. Make the right on Broadway to make you was to Indian Village. I no longer live in JC, but JC will always be my home. Growing up in in such a diverse environment was amazing. Westside was the section of Jersey City I grew up in! It has changed a lot in the past 40 years since I was there last. I grew up on Clarke Ave. which was the corner where the church is at the beginning of the video. So many memories of my childhood & early adulthood there in this area... spent many times stopping at that Dairy Queen at the corner of Westside & Union Street. Rode my bike all around this area back then also! Had great times there in the 1960s & 1970s! Lincoln Park was also one of my favorite places... Nice walk. Still a long way to go to journal square. I went to St Al’s grammar and high school. The high school was closed about 20 or 15 years ago. When you first encountered Lincoln park that is the place I used to hang with my friends and ultimately met my first wife. Got married at St Al’s. You passed my home St Roosevelt Ave. the block before communipour. Thanks for the memories!

My grandfather & grandmother moved there when she was young then lived there at the same apt till she was 92! My early years I lived with her also! When I was 18 I took the apt across from her which lol, my Auntie had lived in with my Uncle & cousin till about 1953, but also in 1972 I became a bride there! Such Blessed Memories! Yes, 3 generations lived there! Amazing!

    I did this walk in the fall! From JSQ to the LRT terminal. The stupid line was out of service, no announcements - people just standing around getting on and off the open rail cars. Had to walk all the way back to JSQ. Actually not that far, well under an hour. Dumpy neighborhood I could see myself living in I had to. Very similar to parts of Philadelphia.

    I live on that street, I wish I knew AK was in my neighborhood! I also work at a store here and I have to say, I have seen many acts of violence at night. There was a man who was hacked with an axe just the other week at a Walgreens on this street. It's not the safest neighborhood to be honest, a police officer was killed about two years ago and there was a shooting on the same street about a year ago. There's a lot of people loitering in dark corners in the evening. There's a lot of drug abuse too. A few blocks down a few years ago a man walked into a Jewish store and opened fire killing I think 12 Jews( I'm not sure).It's honestly not the best of neighborhoods

    • @alexibarona5807
      @alexibarona5807 2 года назад +4

      You exaggerate the hell out it. I think it was 2 jews that got killed, and 1 Hispanic (Ecuadorian) guy that worked at the kosher store. Also that was in the Greenville neighborhood if I'm not mistaken. I think AK is in the West Bergen neighborhood, or around there. Aside from that, yes Greenville and West Bergen neighborhoods often times can be quite dangerous at night. They are the equivalent of East New York, and Canarsie neighborhoods in Brooklyn. They even look like those neighborhoods. Though West Bergen has some nice areas too.

    • @newjerseycitydrive
      @newjerseycitydrive 2 года назад +2

      @@alexibarona5807 you nailed it. A police officer was also killed during that incident at the kosher market before the shooters arrived at the market. 5 ppl were killed in total as well as others being injured by the gun fire, unfortunately. Jersey City has its days but a great place to check out. You just have to cautious of your surroundings just like anywhere else (especially at night).
