    It sounds like they were completely missing the point of what people enjoyed about the original Everquest. So much of the fun was meeting people, leveling up, getting stronger and having the world and all of it's mysteries slowly unlock for you. I can't imagine trying to craft a compelling in-game story and quest structure while also accommodating the fact that the game world itself is constantly changing because of player input.
    Better I think to create a system for GM's or developers to drive dynamic events, both large and small, to add flavor to the game play when people log on. Asheron's Call did this really well.

      and so did they miss what people loved about landmark.

    EQNext is the only game where I have EVER given any consideration to a lawsuit for fraud (i bought one of the founder packs). What they did is wrong, if not legally, certainly ethically. The moment they fired Smokejumper (Georgeson), that was the end of EQNext. To say I'm pissed, even over a year later, would be an understatement.

    Now I know why. I was a landscape architect and interior designer in Second Life. I loved the building tools in SL and had a massive inventory. My business partner and I had a successful castle building sales lot and romantic sim. The novelty wore off SL and I moved to EQ2 in 2015. I enjoy the RP and adventure portions of EQ2 over SL immensely. However, EQ2's building tools are very rudimentary and qualitative. SL's building tools looked like AutoCad lite to me. EQN would have been perfect. Adventure combined with excellent building tools. I'm sad as I was really looking forward to all of that, including destruction. :( .

      I never had the chance to play Second Life back when it was very popular however that sounds really awesome the level of creativity within the game.. I played a lot of Landmark back in the alpha / beta and the building tools were a lot of fun it really is a shame :(

      At the height of our business in SL, my partner (in Australia) was making $40K USD per year (2006 - 2008). However, in the crash of 2008, discretionary income was scarce for players, SL was expensive and vendors like us lost business. Also, theft and copying became rampant...many vendors simply closed shop. We lasted until 2015. When we stopped breaking even we closed our shop.
      I have in EQ2 the region 'Oakmyst' which is technically called a 'House', within that I have built (assembled) a large manor home, guest house, hanging fairy house, elf house, grotto and dock with a ship. The cost to me if I had this in SL would be over $300 a month to maintain as it's as large as an entire Second Life sim. When I get bored of building in EQ2, I just go adventuring and questing... something not available in SL. Also, the artwork in EQ2 combined with the music is absolutely stunning and transports you.
      If I could merge the building tools of SL with EQ2... I'd be in gaming Heaven... I'd also like to bring my massive SL inventory of 10 years into EQ2 as well. :( Oh well, a girl can dream. Thanks for this video, it was very well done and informative. :)

      I'm glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for sharing your story, it really is amazing.. this is why I created the "What Happened To..?" series to proved quick, fun & informative videos on the games we love that either never made release or didn't live up to the hype and spark discussion on how people felt about the games and share their stories :)

    I haven't been able to play EverQuest II because of deteriorating mobility. EverQuest Next was going to be the next game I was going to play. For this game, I wanted to put forth effort in figuring out how to get back to gaming. I was so disappointed when I found out that Daybreak had ceased development!
    As far as what went wrong, I think what went wrong was that they had too much ambition.
    I love the idea of a sandbox world where the world changes as you do stuff in the game. However, there was one aspect that I didn't like. Arguably, it's one of the biggest aspects of sandbox gaming.
    I didn't like the fact that you could destroy parts of the world. I don't like the idea that somebody can come into the beautifully rendered castle, pound it into dust, and there would no longer be a castle. One of the aspects of MMORPGs that draws me in is the beautiful virtual world and its buildings.
    If you could destroy parts of the world, all it would take for somebody to ruin it for you would be for them to get bored and start destroying everything around you.
    Otherwise, I like the idea that your actions affect the story. I like the idea of what you do during a quest might affect the next part of the storyline.
    I also like that aggressive elements would have more on their mind than attacking your character!

    I was in Landmark Alpha from day 1 and enjoyed it until the new owners dropped the prices of flags by 60% just a day or two after putting them in the marketplace, then refused to adjust my purchase of hundreds of dollars worth of flags, even though they had just officially “apologized” to the community for the initial high prices.
    They wouldn’t adjust the sale, wouldn’t escalate my request ticket and didn’t care that they were going to lose this high-spending player over this raw deal, so I left. And I will never spend another penny with Daybreak again.
    Ironically, they did me a favor because the game folded within the year, so they saved me a lot of money.

      The entire thing was a fraud to recoup their loses while attempting to make EQIII... 3 times and failing miserably. I honestly don't believe they were making a game, i think they made a convincing pitch to sell Lankmark to people, then they sold their company to columbus nova and the rest is history.

  • @Mezcon2
    @Mezcon2 8 лет назад +1

    I feel like they should not have made Landmark a separate game. I always thought they should have made Landmark more like a module for EQN sort of like how Star Citizen handles its module, where as they build the game, the world that you get to explore and fight in gets bigger and bigger until the game is complete. Now we will never have it. :(

  • @thephuntastics2920

    day1 trailblazer here :D played landmark 24/7. i actually believe that they had to stop development because they were ashamed of the content quality produced by players vs their own stuff and figuring NEXT would become a 100% player creations gameworld. so they found a cheap excuse in " not being fun" actually saying it was unfun to see players create so much better stuff with an engine we just cant handle properly.

    • @mattstansbeary3068
      @mattstansbeary3068 Год назад

      The reason Player made Great stuff was a Big Bug that we were not suppose to be able to do in the First place and the engine fixing it then Daybreak fit it as best they could so in the end Nothing could not be Made. So they themselves killed EQN. Really Landmark was the tools to make EQN and never should of seen the light to players But Dave wanted us to make a Game and the Developers were not happy. Landmark was suppose to only be the tool set and Dave try hard to make it a game.

    2020 and i'm still pissed off and hurt from its cancellation.. a true revolutionary step in the stale mmorpg genre.. this wasn't just another shiny coat of paint on top of a dead concept.. 2020 and all the current and coming mmorpg's are still just a new coat of paint.

  • @apointtomake1517

    EQNext was already failing when Daybreak took over. You can't look at it as if everything was going great then Daybreak came along and ruined the development. Sony new it was a money pit and they sold off the company. Daybreak looked at what was completed and what still needed to be done and they, along with others knew it was not going to happen so they pulled the plug. Ohh and some of the "senior" devs that were let go. I can bet it went like something from Office Space where employees sat down with "the bobs" and were asked, what do you say you do here?

  • @129das
    @129das 8 лет назад

    I am disappointed. I feel like they were trying to do to much. Didn't have a clear vision. But I am still would have liked to see it try. I have no idea how players would react to such a game. If you can destroy the world can you build it too then its a different game.

    Late to this video, but EQ Next would have taken gaming away from the tired, overplayed model of loot, levels, upgrades, and vanity items built around a PvP framework. Too bad. Game designers need to get out more and look beyond what everyone else is doing and copying that. There are still aspects of Everquest I that go way beyond WoW's refined, but predictable gameplay.
