General Motors is investing tens of billions of dollars to produce new electric vehicles and, it hopes, catch up to Tesla. But those ambitious goals appear distant. This year, the company is struggling to produce a new electric car battery pack meant for the electric vehicles it plans to introduce over the next several years. On Tuesday, G.M.’s chief executive, Mary T. Barra, said the delays were “disappointing” and stemmed from a supplier’s inability to deliver automated manufacturing machinery.
“We are working on multiple fronts to put this behind us,” she said in a conference call with analysts.
GM once again noted that issues in producing new Ultium battery packs are slowing the manufacturing of its electric vehicles.
Production of the Cadillac Lyriq has been especially impacted by the battery issue.

What were the issues? Was it the 12V battery?

I’ve ordered a 2023 Lyriq in May of 2022. In March of this year the order had to be moved to a 2024 model year.
This summer we had to change the color in order to get the car made. The car was made August 21. A year and a half later We’re still waiting on the car. I’m tired of all the excuses on why the car hasn’t been shipped. It’s not a price problem, it’s a manufacturing problem.
I wished I had a Time Machine because I’d go back and then never go down this rabbit hole. To Cadillacs credit it’s a nice car.

I'm in the exact same storyline as you.
      Ordered a 2023.
      Cancelled by GM.
      Pushed into a 2024.
Told my car was built in September.
Still waiting for it in November.
I was TOLD 5 weeks ago, I'd have it in roughly 3 weeks as it needed to be shipped here from Tennessee. Then the UAW strike...
      Excuse after Excuse after Excuse.

If it were mainly an affordability issue wouldn’t there be more of a supply available? I have yet to see a Lyriq on the road other than the demo car I drove. A guy at a dealership told me it was more of a supply issue.

I see maybe one on the road a week. The XT5 and XT6 are more popular - even the XT4.
Many people aren't ready for electric.
But the real issue is the lack of features in the available TECH and "level 1 trims".
To get Supercruise and massaging/heated/ventilated seats you need a LEVEL 2 or LEVEL 3 vehicle.
As far as I know, GM is holding their deliveries back.
      They are HIDING SOMETHING.

Affordability applies to cars that are available. The Lyriq isn't. That translates to an availability issue.

Still mainly an affordability problem - the major OEM's can't afford to make them cost effectively (yet) which translate to high sale prices that average wage earners cant afford. I used the modifier "mainly" due to Ford's Ev's that seem very available at dealerships because people aren't buying them -apparently. But here too cost may be the main issue.

One thing that is going to hurt sales of the Lyriq , and the Chevrolet Blazer, and its Japanese clones, is the terrible Level 3
DC fast charging curve. Several times, during a 0% to 80% state of charge charging session, owners report the rate falls to under 50 KW, and sometimes under 20KW, resulting in total charging times that are over 45 minutes, far far below its segment competitors.
GM appears to have crippled the fast charging rate for fear of battery fires to prevent a another PR disaster like they had with the Bolt. The result has been very poor reviews of the Lyriq which will depress sales.
Added to the unreasonably long delivery times and near total lack of communication with those on the preorder and order lists, you get ordered but then rejected cars (to which dealers add market adjustments pushing even higher the out the door price), adding to the affordability issue.
If someone was going to design a totally botched rollout of a new electric model, they could not have done a better job!
UPDATE: There was an OTA update that made the charging curve, while not outstanding, at least acceptable.

I have a 2024 Sport 1. Used it for 20 days, and it’s been at the dealership now for 6 weeks --GM engineers can’t figure out software issues. BAD NEWS VEHICLE

GM will be forced to do leasing specials. Just about everyone is being forced to: BMW, Mercedes, Audi, VW, etc.
Unlike gas cars, these EV can't just sit around. They spend a higher average time on the lot than a gas car. The 12 volt battery dies and starts to fuck everything else in the car up - even if the car's main battery is fully charged.

Well, everyone's right and everyone's wrong. Those who can afford EVs have bought them. For the masses, they aren't the biggest bang for the buck. Add into that charging issues and the complexity manufacturers face switching production and I call it growing pains.

No one really wants the TECH, Sport 1 or Luxury 1 trims.
People want the LEVEL 2 and LEVEL 3 trims.
Those come with SUPERCRUISE, power moonroof, heated/Ventilated seats and massagers.
Cadillac SCREWED US by discontinuing the Debut edition 2023 and raising the price.
    It's a BAIT AND SWITCH.
When they launched the debut edition - before Russia v Ukraine, before interest rates rose, before the supply shortages... they were charging less than $70,000 for this car and had very few options.
They INCREASED THE PRICE over $7000 and pushed the top trip levels into the high $80,000 range.
This car was competitive at $70,000 but now, the Germans are competitive in this price range and they have better build quality.
GM is backing away from EV thanks to the UAW strike.

I never understood, and Cadillac never said, why the bottom level Lyriq trims were released first.
Usually when a new model is released, the top level trims are the ones built first so people who ‘just want one’ will spend a bit more to get it now rather than waiting.
I am waiting for when manufacturers stop blaming poor production scheduling on “supply chain issues”. For example, they released the Celestial Metallic paint color without knowing how to paint the vehicles at a speed that matches their desired production rate?
GM keeps saying they are “ramping up production” of the Lyriq. So far it has been a very slow ramp.
