The World Chess Championship 2013 was a match between reigning world champion Viswanathan Anand and challenger Magnus Carlsen, to determine the 2013 World Chess Champion. It was held from 9 to 22 November 2013 in Chennai, India, under the auspices of FIDE (the World Chess Federation).
Carlsen won the match 6½-3½ after ten of the twelve scheduled games, becoming the new world chess champion. This was heralded by Garry Kasparov and others as the start of a new era in chess, with Carlsen being the first champion to have developed his game in the age of super-strong chess computers.

From upper left to right for each row starting from the top
From memory:
Kasparov, Karpov, Alekhine, Fischer, Lasker, Botvinnik
Capablanca, Bronstein, Spassky, Smyslov, Steinitz, Tal
Geller, Euwe, Petrosian, Tarrasch, Keres, Bronstein
Rubinstein, Korchnoi, Stein, Gligoric, Fine, Schlechter
Pillsbury, Marshall, Tchigorin, Polugaevsky, Najdorf, Bent Larsen
Morphy, Sultan Khan, Anand , Kramnik, Judit Polgar, Magnus Carlsen
After tarrasch and keres there is reshevsky not bronstein
Jessica Fischer i wanna see a tournament between these 36.
Jessica Fischer wow, those were from your memory!!
Maybe. But I don't think so. Please look at this video I just uploaded- Sammy or Devik? Who is who? Mainly though I just want to be sure. I don't mind if I made a mistake. ruclips.net/video/RkhJBbyadoU/видео.html
Aha I know the answer for sure now- the gentleman to the right of Capablanca is- Sammy or Devik? Reshevsky or Bronstein?
Everyone criticizing Anand, we all have 20/20 hindsight and we all have a 3400 rating when reviewing a game with our computers lmao.
Dante Howlstice nah we don’t have 20/20 vision anymore
I can criticize Anand the way that can criticize Peyton Manning... when they don't play your best and I can see that they're not playing their best, it doesn't mean that I can play better but that I know that they can but they're not.
In retrospect, it's clear now that Anand was just bypassed by someone better and not just someone better, but this was the beginning of his being bypassed by the younger generation. He did challenge Magnus again, but he lost again and if memory serves, is usually on the bottom half of the tournament rankings when playing against an elite crowd.
Thats bcz v bliv anand also computer
"And it was in this position that [insert player's name here] resigned"
This phrase should be agadmator's trademark xD
Not "Sorry bout dat"? Major blunder
Also "For those of you that figured it out, congratulations, you are an [insert compliment]. And for those of you that just want to enjoy the show, the move was..."
And already after move(move number)we have a completely new game😃
Hello everyone
Row 2 for the win. Spassky opens, Tal does the middle game and Capablanca does the endgame
cr0mag what about the bottom? Carlson and morphy would be hard to defeat
I imagine Capablanca appearing to play the endgame after Tal's midgame and saying: "where are my pieces? you sacrificed them all?"
cr0mag I tottaly agree!
just look at the first row, Kasparov, Fisher, Karpov, Aleikien, Lasker, Botvinik, those would be hard to beat.
Thinking it over several of the rows all look terrifying. I'd bet on 1, but it would be a tough battle with 6, 2, and probably 5.
Man, Carlsen is an endgame machine, give Anand a break people ...
ur right
You're saying the opposite sentence.
Viswanathan Anand is Viswanathan Anand and Carlsen is just Carlsen.
@@Aakash983 ur right
I try to protect the king behind my pawns. Magnus protects the king behind his opponent's pawns.
I really love agadmator's channel because his style is so unique like no other chess youtuber i know. I watch you lots man
Row 2 has Tal. Tal smiles, all the other rows collapse
Its rows it's from up to down
Goggireddy Krishna I can’t tell if you’re joking 🤔
If I had to pick my own row, I'd say Magnus, Kasparov, Karpov, Anand, Tal and of course Agadmator to cast the games because without the agadmator casting, the games are not that enjoyable.
There's no way you forget about sound every time, you made meme of this :D
@agadmator thank you for being such a good sport about forgetting the volume. People seem to like it and it makes your channel unique!
I could name maybe 9 at most, but thanks to this channel I recognized about 50% of them.
When these legends play against each others. Give out of there best. And we are blessed to see this kind of quality chess.
Garri Kasparow, Anatoli Karpow, Alexander Alekhine, Bobby Fischer, Emanuel Lasker, Mikhail Botvinnik, Jose Raul Capablanca, David Bronstein , Boris Spassky, Vasily Smyslov, Wilhelm Steinitz, Mikhail Tal, Efim Geller, Max Euwe, Tigran Petrosian, Siegbert Tarrasch, Paul Keres, Samuel Reshevsky, Akiba Rubinstein, Viktor Korchnoi, Leonid Stein, Svetozar Gligoric, Reuben Fine, Carl Schlechter, Harry Pilsbury, Frank Marshall, Mikhail Chigorin, ?, Miguel Najdorf, Bent Larsen, Paul Morphy, Sultan Khan, Viswanathan Anand, Vladimir Kramnik, Judit Polgar, Magnus Carlsen
36 photos shown. Not one is of Gelfand. Disappointed. 😑
That's because everyone knows him, it wouldn't be a challenge anymore :)
We'll pretend we don't know him! 😝😝 Just show us some.. Please!
A Gelfand photo along with your killer one liners is what we keep longing for here. 😝
Please tell me why is Gelfand so special or popular. Thanks.
THE Boris Gelfand is sexiest of them all. He sips all the wine that is offered to him so that he can appear red and plumpy contrary to his pale counterparts while posing for a photograph. He has also mastered the art of lurking in the darkness and is completely undetectable to the untrained eye. Lord Gelfand is wild and can appear out of nowhere surprising everyone around. Such personality is bound to be famous and popular. 😉
Also he plays quality chess!
Of course, he would be the weakest.
This was the Game where Kasparov pronounced 'In the Endgame, the God's have placed Carlsen!'
Row 1, with the Aggressive Kasparov, Calm Karpov, Alekhine the Executioner, Fischer the chess God, Dr. Lasker and the simple and positional Botvinnik
At the moment, Carlsen alone can handle any of these teams alone, he's been studying all of the players on the list and is undefeated for like a year and a half or something.
I considered all but five players on the photo, but I would consider the first row of six players to be the strongesr, including Kasparov, Karpov, Alekhine, Fischer and Lasker, I think this is without a doubt. The game is really beyond my understanding of chess, I have to admit, Carlsen really seemed to squeeze water out of stone and showed why he is really the strongest!
First thing I always do when i come home from work: check if agadmator uploaded a video.
Row 1 held the official world championship for 87 out of the 134 years of its existence! Kasparov (15 years), Karpov (10), Alekhine (19), Fischer (3), Lasker (27), Botvinnik (13). And the guy with the shortest reign, Fischer, was perhaps more dominant at his peak than any other player in history, wiping out his opponents 12-0 in the quarters and semis of the Candidates. My money is on Row 1 in most formats, with all due respect to Rows 2 and 6 (also unbelievably loaded).
it's easy to hold the crown for a long time, if nobody compels you to play. Lasker and Alekhine both sidestepped the best players and only played opponents that could raise the money. I am not saying these players were bad but I would take Fisher, Tal and Smyslov over lasker, steinitz and alekhine any day of the week... Not saying row 1 isn't impressive just not very impressed with duration of holding a championship. Botvinik never one a single match that he defended but got the usual tie goes to the champion bs. Keres Tal and Smyslov were all arguably better than him or at least not so much worse that they couldn't have held the championship for a longer time with a more equitable system. The world championship match is exciting, but, while all the world champions were great, most of the time somebody else out there was better.
The Tweets add a delightful dimension to your already wonderful analyses.
15 of the top of my head. I am a noob who knows the basics very well, so I consider this an achievement. Also, I think Capablanca's logic and Tal's unpredictability would make that team very versatile and with great chances. But Kasparov, Karpov, Lasker and Fisher in one team? I shudder.
HELLO EVERYONE!
The question that the Norwegian reporter asked Anand in the press conference after this game was quite haunting.
Happy Belated Birthday! And I would like to say how much I enjoy your videos. I am a casual player, so sometimes you go too quickly for me, especially if I smoked some grass before watching, but your knowledge of and affection for the game are obvious and a pleasure to watch.
I love your channel. Great work in your break downs
I’m such a faithful subscriber I have been subbed for 84 years
16:56 you guys even think before promoting a pawn. For me it's like a compulsion 😂 to convert a pawn into queen.
I always convert it into a rook😂
@@playboy19-j9e queen can do anything, soo queen first 😂😂
Im so proud of myself i recognized 4-5 from the picture
Man, every row is great! I can't choose between them
2:08 it was „sorry about that” coming but he changed his mind
I would say almost no question row 1 has the most talent, but how can you not love tal and carlsen in row 6
very nice to watch world cup while I see agadmator's videos:)
These Videos make Monday a good day.
thumbs up for the sound blunder and all the best to you!
Hey, it would be great if you could always link the playlist in the video description too, because sometimes youtube doesn't offer you the next game.
I'd say that bottom row (6) will win. Four of them are still living and three of those still active.
Like in dark and lets watch. Thank you from Poland
“It’s a completely winning position for first row”
I recognize 17 and row 1 definitely winning Kasparov Karpov and Bobby Fisher 🔥🔥🔥
I love how often he says: and there is nothing to do here....there is nothing you can do here....there is nothing here...there is nothing to be done here 😂😂😂😂😂
I recognize half of the bottom row and one each in the others! It seems like I should know them all. Is there a prize for my vast ability to forget?
I got 22. I’d choose the top row. I would always choose the Fischer row, put Kasparov, Karpov, Alekhine and Lasker on top of that and you’re good to go
Gabriel Busso I got 22 as well.
Carlsen, Anand, and Morphy would make a good challenge
I know about half of them , but I will just go with the one I believe not many people will recognize. 4th player in the 4th row - Svetozar Gligoric.
1st row has some of the greatest champions of the game. Very hard to beat !!
It's great that we ended up getting the knight promotion in Anand v Carlsen matchup, what a whirlwind
This is a incredible rare game where the pawn doesn't belong to B4, but stil lands there 😃 11:20
I don’t think that Chess will ever be solved. No computer could ever be that powerful to calculate Shannon’s number.
Out of the 132 years of official World Chess Champions, the first row accounts for 86. Nuff said...
12 people. If it weren't for this channel I would have recognized only Garry Kasparov.
1st row is the strongest.
Fischer, Kasparov that's too much to handle.
Yes, not only them, Karpov, Lasker, Botvinnik, god damn 🔥🔥
Almost 200k subs! You're on a roll!
you have the best chess channel
I would pick the first row because all were dominant (Fischer) or both dominant and dominating over time (Kasparov, Karpov, Alekhine, Lasker, Botvinnik)- and all World Champions. No other row contains only world champions.
Fantastic collage of such amazing players. I know about 33 of them, a few I have no clue.
13/36 not vast enough :( Im pretty sure that top row is the strongest ;)
idk how late this is but happy belated birthday man
Raise ur hand if u just saw vishy, magnus, bob
by Fischer and Kasparov
yup those were the only ones i knew
The first row would be the strongest by far.
It would be great if you not just let us know the solution of the "last" challenge, but show the photo again.
Thanks for the great channel!
One of the first books I ever had about chess was aboust lasker. I would read about capablanca and other people around that time. I was young but I enjoyed the book.
11:35 visible frustration
i know 12 names, but recognize a lot of faces! great photo chalenge
Row 1 is insane Kasparov karpov alekhine Bobby lasker and raw 6 has morphy talent and magnus knowledge
Many of you know all 36 but i know the 37 and he is agadmator
agadmator I guess this is the order of the world champions...
So the position at 3:00, is this similar to some 'closed' Ruy Lopez positions? It looks similar to 'arcangel' variations? Has white given up anything to get here compared to if black had playd a6?
ty
Out of the 36 photos, I was able to recognize only 28.
if you released merch that say vast knowledge i would buy for sure
I can't believe Anand first missed b3 then later missed b4 followed by rook to c6 as those moves seemed to be the obvious intuitive choice even to a weaker player like myself as I was already assuming those moves were coming next in the positions before you mentioned anything but there is alot of pressure in these championship matches especially when coming off a loss but still surprising.
" ..that whole Bishop to C7 business" priceless
agadmator you are my inspiration for chess. can you give me some books you have read to learn? i am interested to see your reading list and hopefully get some books from them.
I'd really forgotten how close it was after the first 4 games. It's just the same case as in Fischer-Petrosian in 1971. Once the floodgates break open, there's no stopping the deluge...
Jessica Jones , lol
Just found the channel few days ago, don't know anything of chess and... I have absolutely no clue who any of they are!
...Except Magnus Carlsen. ...At least I THINK that's him on bottom right. Seen him quite a lot on these vdeos, so ...That's who I'm betting my five dollars on.
...
...
...Love the channel though and never thought I'd be this interested to watch something I have absolutely no clue about! VoHiYo
I knew 11. Well after Jessica gave us all a cheat sheet from her memory, I did know Anand too, but the picture was hard to recognize him from.
I think it’s probably the top row vs the bottom row for the picture title. Who knows who would win.
5:33 After Qf6 isn't d4 the best movement for white? consider that if black doesn't capture you are pretty well positioned and if black does then kd5 is brutal
2nd row would prove to be deadly for all the other teams
I know only 17 of them🙂
Hi :) Here are my tries to figure out who are those people :)
1. Garry Kasparov
2. Anatoly Karpov
3. ???
4. Bobby Fischer
5. Emmanuel Lasker
6. ???
7. José Capablanca
8. ???
9. Boris Spassky
10. ???
11. Wilhelm Steinitz
12. Mikhaïl Tal
13. ???
14. ???
15. Tigran Petrosian
16. Alekhine (?)
17. ???

19. Akiba Rubinstein
20 to 30. ???

36. Magnus Carlsen
This is a very nice picture you made Antonio :)
How many points do I get for this one ?^^
Nice vids loved it, and How could u remember all the move *_*
#suggestion please make more videos about computer vs computer as it is the highest level of chess... I kind of want to explore and understand it more
tal's row obv he will sac the other five and claim victory
Kasparov, Karpov...Bobby Fisher, Jose Raul Capablanca, Wilhelm Steinitz, Mikhail Tal, Tigran Petrosian, Siegbert Tarrasch, Akiba Rubinstein, Bent Larsen, Mikhail Chigorin, Paul Morphy, Kramnik, Judith Polgar and Magnus Carlsen...
Thanks dude!
Got 16/36.
As for strongest, I would go with the first row. It contains arguably the three best players of all time. Don't see any other row matching that.
First row and last one are the strongest
hi agad, great work u do , plz cove the game between naka vs comodo (2900 ii think)which played yesterday
Amazing analysis
"B3 immediately...." "B3 IMMEDIATELY" that was funny, love your videos
18/36, either row 1 or row 6 strongest.
Row 1 frame 6 (from left) is Botvinnik, Row 2 frame 2 is Bronstein, and Row 3 frame 5 is Keres? If so, only 24/36, including 3 complete rows (1,2,6) but only one from row 5
At 10:36 why not play king to f5? Seems like a much better move to me. Can someone please explain?
Only 20😢I think second row would be quite strong
at 2:26 after black castles, what will happen if white took the knight on c6 and took the pawn on e5?
Magnus Carlsen and Paul Morphy vs Mikhail Tal and Capablanca, Now that would be the greatest game ever played!!
Vishy instead of Capablanca
Love the tweets, Agadmator!
'Just a second' should be on a tee-shirt. I'd buy that.
Only 35, couldn’t get the far bottom right one lol
Legend said that guy already become world champion
Yeah he's a very old player.. not many know him
May I be the first to congratulate you on reaching 200,000 subscribers...probably by Wednesday.
