    Favs for me
Days Of Thunder (EP) - Days Of Thunder. One of their few songs that actually give me a strong nostalgic feeling. Usually I only get that from actual 80s music, which I listen to more than modern music regularly. I also lived through it. The reason why it gives me nostalgia, the lyrics and tempo.
Endless Summer (album) - Jason. No nostalgic feelings here, I just like the song. Sure it take me back intellectually (Michael Sembello -Maniac) but that feeling is not there for me. In fact the whole album fails for me in that specific regard, otherwise it's great music over all.
Nocturnal (EP) - Crystalline, of course. Just a great song. A touch of nostalgia when the sax comes in.
Kids (album) - Youth is great! Kids (Prelude) & Kids (Reprise), yeah I lived it. Saturday Mornings (interlude) Yep, I lived it. Def nostalgia, literal memories in this case. I like Lost Boy a lot but it's not a nostalgic thing on that one. Well the track name does remind me of The Lost Boys, but that's the case anytime I see those words together.
Monsters - 1991 (intro) Been there, done that. Don't miss it. 😅 Ok, this album. I honestly haven't given it the best of listens. Truth is, when it came out I skimmed through it and didn't like what I was hearing very much so I ignored it. Since then, I've tried here and there, but I just can't get into it. Frankly, there's not much music that wasn't metal I liked in the 90s, with the exception of NIN (which rocked too), Marilyn Manson (which rocked too), and Skinny Puppy which is my all time favorite group. That said, I do have The Search for Ecco on a playlist. So for me, it's currently their worst release. Mostly unlistenable unfortunately. Maybe I'll like it in the future, never know.
Horror Show (EP) - This EP, Master of Horror John Carpenter all over it. Love every song except the cover of Because the Night. Sorry but that thing is a monstrosity imo. At least it lives up to the title of the album. 🤣 This is their best release for me. Neon Medusa, I think gives a nod to MJ.
The Rearview Mirror (EP) - listened to it once, for the lulz. No seriously, it was an interesting take, but not something I'll be listening to much at all, if ever. I don't hate it.
Now I'm just waiting on Heroes. I saw the awesome 80s promo style Official Trailer, heard the clips, heard the 80’s rock/pop rock inspired singles, as I imagine most fans have. It's definitely a different sound for them. Change Your Heart or Die sounds like if The Midnight, Def Leppard and the MTV Intro from the 80s had a child. Brooklyn. Friday. Love. reminds me of, IDK, Huey Lewis and the News or something. I don't know what to think about the others. The album will be an interesting listen, that's for sure. I'm thinking growers, but maybe I'll find an instant hit or two (for me) in there. I'll have to wait and see, or rather listen.
That brings me to the end so now I'd just like to say I enjoyed the doc very much. Excellent work Jack. Subbed.

Some really, really good choices there! I appreciate your justifications too. If I could go back and change anything in the video I think I'd reevaluate Nocturnal and give it more airtime. I think I actually rated it quite harshly and I'm perhaps a bit regretful of it.
I'd say I like all of their songs to varying degrees, however, there is one song that I really, really, dislike. It's Night Skies on Monsters. I really like the instrumentation but in my opinion the vocoder is so heavy and discordant that I just struggle to listen to it and enjoy it. I appreciate the concept- much like with Helvetica- so maybe I'll come around to it at some point but I'm in no rush to force myself to like something that I don't for the sake of feeling like an authentic fan. I like your honesty about that; everyone takes something different away from a piece of art and it's okay to not get anything from it at all. I have seen some pretty nasty comments on their socials though, which isn't nice to see.
Hopefully Heroes can be a hit for you, or at least give you some great songs to add to your collection. Pretty much all of their major releases have come about at significant times in my life and now I'm starting something new and making content for people to enjoy so I'm hopeful that it will be another chapter to enjoy!
Thank you for the kind words!

The strangest thing about The Midnight is that they're not nostalgia merchants, they're closer to their motto of "mono no aware". Anyone who grew up in the 80's and early 90's would realize that The Midnight's work doesn't sound anything like that era's music.
Take "Aerostar", one my favorite tracks from the band. I don't recall any 80's group that sounded similar with clean chiming guitars, airy vocals yet with a gloomy air. Even Depeche Mode, the granddads of electro-pop, had a much brighter sound then compared to their somber, pounding sound now.
Synthwave is definitely a "contemporary reimagining of the period", to borrow your words. The 80s they're creating never existed: it remains a dream, a nostalgic reminiscence of something that never was, and that's what makes the whole scene so compelling.

I didn't say "go listen to The Midnight", I think she'll be doing it by herself because I'm sure she'll crave for more synthwave. Oh, and one more thing: she's a musician.

Nostalgia is not something that you discribe, its something that you feel.
I only love a handful of their songs but the ones I do hit the nostalgia trigger like a truck. Born in 77 I was a bmx kid during the 80s, when every trip outside was a mini adventure of discovery. It really was the best decade to grow up in. Weird thing is that I didn’t really start listening actively to music before high school but I was, like a lot of people here I’m sure, introduced to 80s new wave through Hughes’s movies and so many others and my brain just soaked it in
    Favorite Song: Explorer
Also, I think I’d say a song like Sunset has a Amblin feeling, not a Disney one

I've grown with them through the years, and now, 6 years later, I finally had the opportunity to see them live. It was astounding. I can say confidently they are my favorite band of all time, and probably forever will be, just because of how the music has followed me through life.
Now, cause it's fun, here's my top song from each album

Amazing work! As a child of the 80's myself, not only does the Midnight's music bring me back, but you did an amazing job with all the snippets and clips! I truly miss those days!
I came across The Midnight purely by accident! I was searching Pandora for the soundtrack to the movie, Days of Thunder, to rock out on while I was driving my sportscar. Without even looking, the song Days of Thunder started playing. I realized it was not what I asked for, but I could not help but keep listening! I was IMMEDIATLY taken back to my childhood, me at 17 driving around the city in my 1985 Camaro with my girlfriend. Needless to say, The Midnight have since become probably my favorite band ( Sorry, Boston and AC/DC!) and I collected quite the collection of Synthwave favorites! Thank you so much again for keeping the past alive in this crazy present!

I read one comment here that skirts so closely to the explanation of The Midnight's nostalgic power. They indeed aren't Nostalgia Merchants. They are Nostalgia Manipulators. They take a chord progression. A simple tone or a lyrical concept and re-work it in a modern way.
For example Endless Summer. It's not that the song sounds like It came straight from the 80's, it has a very modern EDM kick drum beat to it. Not 80's at all. But what they do is weave a certain synth tone in with that beat. I'll time stamp below one of the exact moments in that song you feel the nostalgia wave hit you within this video.
22:48-22:50 hear that chirping up down effect? that's the kind of subtle insert of sound that you barely even consciously notice, but that's the kind of sound used in 80's movies around technology. Think the intro to Short Circuit and the digital sounds they're using to impose a feeling of cutting edge technology being created by a government contractor... They find a different context to use that tone in, almost like accessing a digital memory bank of one's past.
Another great example is the 'people's favorite' as you call it from that album, Sunset... Between the drum beat, which has a very 80's flare to it throughout and again, that little subtle choice you might not even notice 23:43-23:45 that chiming almost bell like tone. It's not the tone. It's the progression... that progression was used SO MUCH in 80's pop songs like 'Who can it be now' by Men at Work. They've just reworked it to fill a different contextual role.
They've learned to take small cues of that era and interweave them in such a way that your brain goes 'Why do I feel like I know this from 40 years ago?!" Meanwhile you also know, you've never heard this before. It's a very powerful effect that grabs a listener's ear and holds on with a determined ferocity and all at once, for people who did live through the 80's and 90's, like myself, we exclaim something like, "NOW THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR!" Because it's fresh, it's new, but it's what we've been missing too. As pop music went farther and farther away from what my generation grew up with, we fell into the same trap as our parents... "Today's music isn't as good as it used to be." Well here's the music of today, being JUST AS GOOD as it used to be.

I've seen The Midnight live every time they've toured, and that first time seeing them was absolutely magical. Everyone I chatted to in that audience said it was easily one of their top five shows ever, and we're talking people who'd been going to concerts for 20+ years in many cases. They sell out venues double the size of the previous tour every time they come back, and the entire audience sings along to almost every song because they're just that iconic.

I stumbled upon The Midnight by accident one day. I had been listening nonstop to GTA radio stations on youtube, and getting bored of the repetition, I found a fanmade radio station that played "synthwave". I had never heard of it before, but figured, eh, why not.
Gloria was the first song I heard and holy crap I couldn't get enough of it! I started exploring all their other songs and more synthwave. I didn't know this was a genre my heart needed. The nostalgia connection for me was the music has a similar feel to an old game I used to play called Vegas Stakes. There's casino called 2020, and it's "futuristic" with a similar vibe of music. Because of that and the foundation of 80s music to much of the genre, I always explain Synthwave to folks as "What the 80s thought the music would sound like in the 2020s".
Thanks for this indepth video. I enjoyed it very much. I'm subscribing to see what other videos you produce because I enjoy this depth of learning, and your voice is pleasant to listen to.
Also if you like the saxophone in The Midnight songs, I'd highly recommend another video here on youtube: ruclips.net/video/001hXHNo-3w/видео.html&ab_channel=RetrowaveTouch (If the link doesn't work, the title of the video is called: Best Synthwave & Saxophone Songs Part 1. Enjoy!).

I think I first heard Lost & Found (which I missed out in this video) and then my love was really ignited after hearing the Jason sax on the intro of a meme compilation. I checked them out and realised I had songs already saved and I was like, "yeah, I've gotta give these guys a chance."
Is that the one on the SNES? I played it a few times as a kid but I don't remember the music so I'll have to have a look!
That's a perfect way of summing it up. Like a kind of retrofuturistic kind of vibe!
Thank you for your feedback. I'm so grateful that you took the time to watch it and share your thoughts and experiences with me. It's one of the great things about making content; feeling and inspiring other's creativity and emotions. I have another video coming hopefully in the next month which should be super interesting to watch.

Saw the thumbnail of this video in the credits of TRO's most recent video and I immediately went 👀 and scuttled over to make sure I wasn't seeing things.
I came across The Midnight a couple of years ago after following the YT recommended bar from some Trevor Something. A discovery I'm grateful to have made.
I think Crystalline or Lost Boy were the first ones I found, and Vampires was soon after, but when I hit Shadows it really hit a sweet spot for me. I knew I'd be listening to their music from then on. Jason and Neon Medusa are a couple of other faves.
I don't usually find myself listening to musical analysis, but this felt more like...talking with a friend about a shared interest that they know more about. Really pleasant and enjoyable!
Edit because I didn't realise how many songs I liked from Horror Show! I was sure my faves were scattered relatively all over the place, but as soon as Ghost in Your Stereo and Devil Make a Deal came on I was like 'Hang on I forgot those but they're on the faves list too!'

I remember him showing me Lost Boy for the first time and him mentioning how it reminded him of where he was when he met me. And now we just say that their music is the soundtrack of our relationship. Los Angeles was the song we slow danced to last at our wedding. The Years is the song we listened to back at the hotel when the wedding was over. Monsters and Horror Show were great distractions from the pandemic and social unrest. This new album is going to be the soundtrack for this next chapter of our lives.

I'm a 90s kid but I grew up watching a lot of movies from the 80s. When I first heard tunes from The Midnight, I recognized the sounds immediately and became nostalgic of my childhood. Their tunes sounded more 80s than the tunes actually produced in the 80s. The sounds from movies like Karate Kid and Nightmare on Elm street are all incorporated in many of the songs produced by The Midnight. I discovered Synthwave through them basically and have been into the genre ever since.

Awesome video, great work man. And a very nice way to share your appreciation for your (our) favorite band The Midnight!
Thankfully, I can make use of the comment section 😅. My absolute favorite album/EP is Days of Thunder, it was my introduction to The Midnight (at that time they already released Kids) and I was blown away. The Years is so beautiful and all the other songs were all great as well. I never experienced that before, that so many songs/tracks are not only good but really great. 100/100
Nocturnal comes second for me with 95/100. Shadows, River of Darkness and Crystalline are so powerful, and I love the strange but very beautiful track Tokyo Night Train.
Endless Summer is another great album, 93/100, there are so many beautiful and catchy songs and sounds that it is almost unbelievable. There is no track that I don't like, and the extra two songs are trully a bonus.
I also really like Kids, 90/100. Funny enough I like the 'non-Kids' songs the most. Explorers, Wave, America 2 and Lost Boy are all awesome
Monsters scores less, but still good 85/100. My favorite track is Dance with Somebody, but there are many nice tracks such as Brooklyn, Last Train and Deep Blue. And yes Helvetica, it also took some time to grow on me but now I absolutely love it.
I like Horror Show the least, which says a lot about The Midnight since I still give it 80/100. Neon Medusa and especially Good in Red are great.

    • @cojack
      @cojack  2 года назад +1

Super interesting to see the contrast in styles between the ones you enjoy more and those that aren't quite as high up there.
When I make the sequel I'm going to address nocturnal again. I think I underrated it by quite a lot. Tokyo Night Train is a magical track. I was listening to some Tangerine dream recently and could tell how deep the influence flowed!

For those of us who were born in the early to mid 70's and were kids in the 80's (Gen-X), we remember the sounds and the Zeitgeist. Things were much simpler in the past. I love "The Midnight" because they remind me of being a child in the 80's. People who were born in the 50's have find memories of growing up in the 60's. With the Beatles and hippie culture. Every generation has movies, music, and fashion that define it. I've seen that many of the young people that comment on 80's music videos, are thanking their parents for introducing them to it. "The Midnight" has touched Gen-X because of our fond memories of the decade. Thank you.

    • @cojack
      @cojack  Год назад

From your perspective, how far and fast did pop culture change/evolve through the 70s, 80s and 90s? You're totally right about music, movies and fashion defining generations, I was wondering how it felt living in it vs how it feels looking back at living in it. Do your experiences match up to how young people now imagine it was?

Absolutely love this. You are right though about music and the memories it brings back. Growing up in the 80's, music was how my Dad and I enjoyed each others company. I was introduced to artists like the Beatles, Beach Boys, and various other artists. I listened to the radio and grew up listening to the music of the time and artists like The Midnight tap into that feeling somehow. They are amazing and I found them by accident one day on surfing on RUclips and I have been a huge fan and hooked on their writing ever since. That lead me into the amazing world of synthwave. This is amazing and why have I never heard of these guys. That was my first step into the world of Synthwave and I have been hooked ever since. Still to this day that album just gets me going 100%. By the way for me it was reel to reel tape with my Dad and Records back in the 80's and then later walkmans etc. Those days are missed and I think thats why what Midnight does and how they write just somehow captures that magic. So many fantastic artists in the space but Midnight hands down is my go to all the time.

I was born a little too late to be doing R2R but my dad collected vinyls for most of his life so I got the bug for that as a late teen. A waste disposal place near where I lived has a building where they resell things that don't need to be thrown away. You could pick up some really cool vinyls in there for maybe £1 a piece. That's really interesting! You like the darker, moodier tracks then? I like the latest release but I also know what you mean. I think the older releases had more of a homemade kind of vibe to them whereas the newer ones are bit more polished but that's probably more of a natural evolution than a conscious choice. I'm hoping whatever comes next is up your alley!

@@cojack ya the darker more moody stuff does speak to me a little more but I do like all of their stuff and I agree the older ones had a really special homemade quality to em but I understand the better you get the cleaner your mixes will be but the homemade thing fits synthwave really well

if the vampires is "Jason Deluxe", than the equalizer would be "Jason Lite", 'cause it has the same key and bpm as Jason, and almost the same chord progression, so you can kinda sing that one over it.. :D
here's Tim talking about the origin of that track (which I'm sure you've heard, it's just made me appreciate that track more..)

      @@cojack Oh... That´s a tough question... Tbh I don´t really know, I like all of them 😂
Edit: The first song I heard from The Midnight was Jason. Saw the vid on the right side while listening to a complete different music genre. As my name is Jason, I clicked on it and thought "Yeah, that´s good" and clicked it away after like 2min of listening.
Next day I got more recomendations and listened to more, liking them more and more.
Nowadays besides Rick Astley, I only listen to Synthwave bands and artists, The Midnight being my favourite out of them all. Their songs carried me through a hard time last year (discovered them early August last year), so I can´t thank them enough
(btw. I´m too young to feel some sorts of nostalgia, tho I always loved the 80s and 90s 🥰)
So yeah, Jason kinda has a special place in my heart

The power of music is always so fascinating. It's so common that we take it for granted a lot of the time but it can have a really empowering effect. We can give it so much power!
You can definitely feel nostalgic even if you're young! There's no laws on what you can and can't feel nostalgic about, if you feel it you feel it!
I know the term 'Anemoia' is coming into use a bit more which- I think- is to do with nostalgia for things you've never experienced. That could be a way to describe how you feel if you don't think nostalgia fits it?

I had to put some rules in place with the amount of tracks I used just so the run time wasn't even longer than it is now. I do feel guilty for not including it though. I also missed out Lost and Found owing to it not being on the bandcamp release of the album. I think Shadows is such a great song.

    • @SpruceCampbell
      @SpruceCampbell 2 года назад +1

@@cojackThere really is a gigantic amount of their music that could merit attention in this type of video, so I can respect slimming down for time constraints. My personal Best of The Midnight playlist on RUclips is almost 3 hours long since I have multiple versions/remixes of some of their songs. Kalax's remix of Los Angeles has to be my favorite, although the piano version of that song by Aerial Hiking is also divine. Their home recording of Memories that they did in April 2020 is a -top 3- no -top 4- no wait -top 5 track- AAAAHHH there's too many great songs!
One thing I've always kinda wished they didn't do is the vaporwave sound where they distort the vocals. I know many like it but I certainly don't, I just want the natural vocals. I think you had a blurb about liking the altered vocals in Shadows and I'm on the opposite end of that 😆. Aside from the vapor sound in the chorus I do still love the song though.

@@SpruceCampbell I can definitely understand why some people don't feel so strongly about vocoders. Tyler has such an amazing voice; so pure and clean. I can see why so many people love it as it is. I enjoy the musical side of vocoders- I probably could nail down exactly what I love about them if I had enough time but it's be hard to think on the spot. I'd say in America Online, the vocoder is phenomenal, it's one of my favourite songs of all time and it contributes this almost robot-like personality to the track.
I'd absolutely be down to make another video in the future once the new album is out and maybe talk about some of the songs that I missed. It'd be great to work with Tim and Tyler to get some footage and behind the scenes stuff- I think that could make a good video.
