I'm friends with the dark haired guy's youngest brother. He actually has like seven brothers and when they get together for family reunions they all sing to their grandmother in harmony. It's one of the most moving things a man can experience. They're an exceptional family.
I always appreciate a tasty dominant 9th. Barbershop is all about the 7ths, I'm on the prowl for the extra spice where it counts. If you look up the barbershop version of Lately (Gotham City Singers, I think?) by Stevie Wonder, there's an absolutely glorious minor 9 at the emotional climax and it's worth every second of build-up, so good
@@AJ-fe8om “thou shall not use the name of the Lord’s name in vain” is one of the 10 commandments. His intentions weren’t “pure” but I do agree they may be out of ignorance. It really is amazing how much can be done with such simple devices. One of the best examples of the major scale being used as a melody has to be Pas de Deux from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker. The main motif is just a descending G major scale but he manages to squeeze so much out if it. It's honestly just black magic that he manages to build this to an epic climax that's centered around the brass blasting out this incredibly simple descending major scale.
I've discovered that piece recently and I'm amazed at how beautiful it is. It mixes that 50's era chord progression feel (at the beginning) and some beautiful classical instrumentation and composition
What kind of chord is even that? If you take individual notes you literally have straight tones G - A - B - C# spread across octaves. I think it more the supperposition of 2 thirds A + C# in the bottom line and G + B on the the 2 top lines, which just magically rings together.
That was awesome. Four voices singing and you can slightly hear the fifth!! Back in the early 80s, I sang Barbershop in a small 30-35 member chorus our sound was compared to a 50 man chorus. Had several quartets great memories, wonderful times...
It was an honor for my school district’s choir to work with the bass Jim Henry about a year ago. He was a great and funny clinician with an amazing voice!
You could see how emotional Brandon Guyton was when they finished up the number at the BHS Finals. And rightfully so, I'm sure a lot of the audience members (and viewers here) were tearing up just the same!
Love the barbershop content! If y’all have never heard the newfangled fours version of cabin for sale, it is one of the most beautiful barbershop performances of all time, I highly recommend it!
I'm glad agent Hank Schrader got a less dangerous job after chasing all those thugs. Jokes aside, their performance is amazing and overwhelmed me so much. Thank you
We used to sing this arrangement in my old quartet - although nowhere near this well, and my favourite note in the entire piece (as the tenor) was that B natural on "do". Luckily, our lead had the pipes to hold the post, as I don't think I could manage it. The tenor part during the post is more fun anyway. This quartet is amazing and Jim Henry (bass) and Fred Farrell (tenor) are absolute beasts.
He held that G for quite a while
23 second belt no problem :D
In Barbershop that’s no sweat
He a G
Good breath control! It was awesome!!
It is all about BEING RELAXED.... The human voice is hampered by too much fussing

ALways wanted to have that group of friends/family that could bust out a rendition of some classic. Thats awesome
Which dark haired guy?
@@EmbraceTheInevitable the one with the goatee. He's the Baritone.
:))
@@loganbaggerly4154 that would be Brandon
HOLY FUCK THE BASS hitting that fat G4 wow im so jealous what a beautiful voice
Jim Henry is built different
that was amazing
@@HammerGamingFTW truly is
Is G4 the fourth G from left of keyboard.?
@@jimgresham5529 Yes. It may be easier to remember C4 = middle C, since going up or down from there is easier :)
Tony Soprano: "A true G knows how to hold on to a G."

Oh yeah
Bro the Bass on that high G
This arrangement is just so goddamn good
Isn't it incredible!!!
It may be good, but your adjective is utterly revolting!
@@caduceus33 agreed. I’d so much rather someone use even the f word than God’s name in vain. God is perfect and doesn’t deserve that

The bass hitting that clean G4 is, for lack of a better word, heavenly. That man is a beast
Jesus that Tenor strength came out of nowhere
Barbershop tags are so fun to sing. Especially if you have larger ranges so you take turns singing the other parts.
Yes! We used to get in 4 lines and then randomly get assigned a part, sing a verse and the next guy would continue
Holding that G for an eternity was EPIC!
Harmony is proof of magic, with just our voices our hearts together in unison becomes one song❤️
facts
00:16 The sound of a V7/V chord with major 9 (A9 in this case) is the BEST sound in the world. Prove me wrong

What happened to them? Sorry I’m new to barbershop

great minds think alike :)
Just a normal evening out with the bros.
I love the harmony that a Barbershop quartet can produce.
that seventh chord at 0:04 sounds so pure like just intonation or the harmonic series
I have no talent or understanding about audio/music theory.
I just know what my ears like.

I was thinking of the horn solo in the Adagio of Beethoven's Symphony #9. Very good use of a major scale.

A9! It is SO very beautiful!

I believe it's implied to be an A dominant 9th chord without the 5th: A C# (E) G B, which just rings so well when it's so open
@@jasonfieler This is correct, it’s A9.

I've never heard this before, and I'm shocked. The final harmony is so on point...
What he does with the tempo on the descending scale is genius. Somehow gives a bigger sense of 'coming home' to the tonic without a great big rit.
