Love the way the house looks now mate, sooooo warm and cosy. Take a step back sometime Kris and REALISE just what you have achieved. What was once a forest floor, is now a home with a Marmite jar and a toaster in it! What was once a hillside field to poor to farm, now contains a workshop, a shower, some trees, a kitchen garden and the beginnings of a HUGE man cave! What used to be a bog is now a lake, even the stream is generating power... ...and miracle of miracles, your khazi actually has a DOOR these days! ;-) Creating something out of nothing but hard work really is something to be proud of!!
Planning to do a strawbale house of my own in a few years. Smallholding, sheep flock for wool - to use for my wool spinning - and the entire life of the outdoors. Haven’t got a piece of land yet (saving money and searching for the best spot). But your videos always inspire me to keep going. It makes me think “oh... yeah, that’s a simple solution. I can do that.” Can’t wait to say I have done it. It’s nice to see someone close to home doing it as well. I’m in Carmarthenshire so not very far from you. Keep up the good work. You’re doing well!
matthew wood Thats exactly what I plan to do. Finding a natural building project near home is a bit tough though. I’m always on the look out - I would have volunteered to help Kris with his earthbag workshop but I also work full time in the hospital so I wasn’t able to get time off. 🙄... I have faith things will work out in the end though.
Jessica Peck good for you chick, do what kris does, make a model of what your intentions are, actually “see” what you are building, and if it’s what’s meant to be, you will make it happen
I have watched you build this and everything else over the past couple of years Kris. Every inch hand done by you with some help here and there. When one enters I bet they get a feeling that is rare in this modern age. The feeling of pure serenity.
So funny, Dot appears to be making you into a man with a home! (Yes, not a house, a HOME) Much good vibe to you both and to the house, which is just amazing!
Great video! I love your solution for heating the water via the stove. Very cool. I was surprised by how simple the roof fix was, I had assumed you would have had to delicately place the sod up there and instead you were able to just throw them up there.
Yep! Spring cleaning and Fall winterizing. Keeps the house in shape for a thousand years. I'm thinking you need a PTO so cutter to slice up your sod properly for your roof. Also think about a piece of your land that is planted super thick with grass all the time for fall sod harvesting.great work!
A mix of Italian and Perennial ryegrass would help hold that roof together for most of the year. It grows fast and a few pounds worth of seed would be enough to cover that entire roof numerous times. We use something similar here in the US for erosion control and winter pasture.
Somehow, I knew long back when you made the decision to put most of the balcony support over that window, that it was going to sag over time. I was authentically concerned because I knew you and the gal would be keeping things rough up there.
Chris I am just looking at this xmas video of yours and wondered what you have in store for 2020 as it has been a very hard year for everyone and no doubt yourself to and I believe and you have come so far. Xmas is also a time to reflect on times gone by and into the future, Chris may I ask there are so many things you have achieved but does any one in particular stand out for you regards John

Years ago my Grandmother told me to use old wadded up clean newspaper to clean your windows. You don't have to use a bunch of window cleaner and it doesn't streak, unless its really cold or you are using cheaply made window cleaner. Spray foam we got from our window installer has lasted forever the can is like 13 inches tall with white label blue/black lettering that simply says glass cleaner.
So true. Nothing better. My window cleaner is a 1:10 mix of water and methylated spirits, applied with a plant spray bottle. Clean off with clean newspaper.
I like the daily life stuff and the project stuff if that is any help. Would also enjoy "how I did it" style reflection videos. Especially on the practicalities of buying the land, deciding what to build and where and what you would change. Loving it anyway
1:12 be good to put some wood beads around the glass unit, you have to keep the sun off the spacer of the window, helps to prevent the unit from breaking down and fogging up inside the unit, Just my OCD as a window fitter lol
Hi kris ive been following your chsnel for alittle while and i must say i really enjoy it and really like what all you doing i really think you guys are going to be comfortable there.Id like you to know ill be watching more i enjoy your projects and how well you complete it .
Cool Build. Was wondering - Why was the Window Frame dropping? That support seems questionable. If the earthen roof is holding onto too much water, the structure would be holding up a tremendous amount of weight. How does the roof shed the rain water?
Other than an 'ye olde' living style of the roundhouse, how does the comfort and warmth of the roundhouse compare to a modern house? It's obviously back breaking work to build and maintain but the feeling and sense of achievement has to warm the soul! I think if I didn't have the health issues I have I'd have left suburbia long ago to live on the outskirts and enjoy a better standard of life!
Daniel Lukes ha! I have asked that like a year ago. Kris said “eventually”. I think it would pay for itself if he makes a video with a good thumbnail of the finished floor.
was curios will u at some point put a finished flooring down or go with the ruff cut u have ,an if u use /keep the rough will u finish it at some pointby sanding and using a stain or clear coat,or maybe oil of sort
Just FYI, that check valve that you installed is of the Compression Type. There is no purpose or advantage of using thread tape. I don't know if there is a disadvantage, but you certainly don't do it normally. Hope this aides you in the future.
I may have miss it but, why don't you have an inside bathroom? ( I mean little room attached to main building) I get having a pit toilet when there is no running water but you have that. I guess for sewage you can do something similar to what you have outside but with a leaching bed, all stuff that you are more than capable of doing. Just a question, I can't imagine walking out early morning in winter to go..
Why don't you have a drying shed for clothes for laundry. Basically a normal wooden shed install radiator have the hot water from wooden burner to rad your clothes will be well n truley dry for you. Something you can plan for the future. I have this drying shed in my back garden. Cost notting in untility bills as mine comes off the back boiler of wooden burner. It's fantastic in the winter months when you have large amount washing. In your case you could put washing machine in your drying shed.
@Karma is knocking I suppose it would depend on how your pump setup is. For example bosch pumps are of much higher quality than say lukas etc. Clearly though yours is proven to work well. How old is your tractors though, pre 1990s is generally where literally everything perishes. Leave a few rubber washers in some used cooking oil and you will see what I mean they literally turn to paste
Hi Kriss. Would sell one of the stainless steel boxes as a flat pack for the micro hydro system with coanda tiles please? As I need to use it in Malawi. Thanks
For the time it'll last it wouldn't be worth it, the size is plenty big enough for two people, it seems like this was built with the idea of it lasting 10 - 15 years. The house walls are built on decking timber, I guarantee it'll be the first major damage to the structural integrity. Otherwise it's on fairly good foundations, the roof is supported by both the outside log walls and the inner framework, whilst allowing for major ground movement because the inner framework and outer walls are independent... I'd like to think this bloke will have built something way beyond this within the next 10 - 15 years if he outgrew it to the point of needing an extension. I'd like to see a project like this combined with some decent money behind it and make an ultimate eco house. There's massive potential here.
2:30,. That's not maintenance! lol,.. Tut tut tut,.. lol By the way, have you considered getting a 3D gimbal for your camera for rock steady footage? Sorry if it's been mentioned already. :)
When you get your future home built on your property, your present home could become a source of income as an air b&b, or some such? You have enough subscribers that you could offer to rent to them for long weekends and get a few hundred quid coming in.... this is just a passing thought - I don’t know the legal ins and outs of this kind of thing...
i think planning etc is different for everyone all over the world, so what might work in one place might not work in another. If your your looking at doing something in Wales UK, then i suggest you look up "One Planet Council" any where else in the world i cant help, and Kris probably cant either. i hear what your saying about doing a video, but it would only be relevant to where Kris lives. probably the same for all the other off grid video's. If your serious about doing it yourself. just make a list of all the places you want to live and work through them learning the laws and by laws. There are loop holes all over the world for you to do it :) am doing this process myself right now. :)
Love the vids, very interesting. Just a note though, not sure you're meant to put any type of valve in the flow or return pipe from a wood burning stove, but then I'm not sure the system you have there. It looks like an un-vented cylinder which is also a big no no with stoves. Anyway, I'm sure you know what you're doing. I wouldn't normally comment like this, but my conscience got the better of me. Be well
Having been there myself and looked at what he has made. i can assure you its very safe with all the right valves in all the right places. no ticking time bomb here :)
really interested in your water heating setup - was there a more detailed video on it? unvented cylinders can build up pressure, what's your setup like with the safety valve? i can't see it but i've no doubt you put one somewhere...

It would run, however old tractors constrain old rubber without viton. Last a very very short time before catastrophe

Yes
Hey Kris, does that little wood stove heat the whole place in winter?
Phillip Berger it will most definitely, a little stove, (about 4kw is the smallest), will easily heat 200cubic mtrs

there's more than enough info online about planning in wales. Bit of a boring subject considering the talent and projects Kriss has

Wouldn’t it be much easier and efficient if you used a propane water heater. Instant hot water and uses very little propane. Vinny 🇺🇸

Hard work, savings and selling most belongings from city life.
