  • Tuning for this cover (and I believe Mick Ralph's live sets) - CGCGCE. This allows you to play the studio-version solo, verses, and chorus parts with pull-offs on the 1st and 3rd strings. Also allows for the nice little riffs after the 1st verse and at the end of the song. This tuning is also good for the slide which Ralph uses to do his solo's on all the live footage I can find. In an interview he stated that in the studio he used a slightly different C-tuning (CCGCEC) for this song. The pull-offs then change to the 2nd and 4th strings, but the fret positions are basically the same. It sounds great, but then you cannot do the solos and fancy riffs in the song. Not a problem in the studio with multiple tracks and guitars, but not good live which is why I think live he goes with the standard Open-C tuning noted above. Peace.

Mick Ralphs in an interview told how he was tuned. You are close, it is open C, but it should be GCGCEG, which is open G capoed on the 5th fret, except you use smaller strings so that it works. This info from Mick himself.

excellent work...this is the way a youtube video should be done...no BS or gratuitous talking or "look at me" BS....just a good and concise lesson with a great written explanation. thanks

Good job! That tuning looks like a lot of stress on the neck, have you had any issues?

Yeah its a cool cover. I'm using it on my martin. using a 13 to 56 set with a plain 3rd. Only string that goes up is the B to C. check this out. stringtensionpro.com/Home
Its a very cool tool. you can set scale length, string gauge, number of strings. any ways its lower pounds of tension overall than standard.

He’s playing in open c. All the strings are tuned down except the b string. It has less tension than standard tuning..
