Have you ever considered adding other forms of electrical generation such as wave generation or wind generation? The wind and the wet and the waves will continue even overnight to charge your batteries.
Wind is not that efficient. We have a 400w wind gen, only produces on average 2A. Most wind generators need over 8 knots of wind to start producing power, 15 or more for better power production. Some have water turbine generators, but you have to be moving. Don't think there is any portable wave power generators avail, I think its only works with large swell movements.
Cheap wind gens suck, but there are good one out there. Nice thing about wind is that no deck space lost, works at night, when its cloudy it tends to be windy. Solar and wind work very well together. When wind conditions are perfect, durplus of power you can run water makers etc off 12v dc.
This reminds me of the Honda generator conversation. Enjoy all your sun power and AC . Jetty deserves to sleep in air conditioned comfort. Good girl Jetty.
Living in the tropics on a sailboat, an AC unit is absolutely necessary. Good on you guys for getting that box ticked! I would get a super high-efficiency HARD panel on a cord, that you can put out on a cloudy day to get some additional support.
Hi guys! The Lazy Bag can be equipped with flexible solar panels in a vertical position. This will increase the efficiency of energy production during sunsets and sunrises. Not to mention that the reflection of the water surface will even enhance the lighting effect! It only remains to find a way to install them reliably in order to receive solar energy at anchor or even during navigation, regardless of which side the Sun is on !!
You need to be aware that the flexible solar panels can really mess up the roof they’re mounted on. They get really hot and that heat gets transferred onto the roof. Depending on the type of roof, they can cause some serious damage. We have flexible solar panels on our motorhome and other motorhome owners who decided to replace them with rigid panels, found that the flex panels had caused serious damage to their fiberglass roofs.

One of the first things we did on S/V FUN, was to remove the non working propane galley, and add an induction cook top, and small air fryer convection oven. I built a gimbal to house them. We LOVE it! Does not heat up the galley, and cooks quick. We always know how much volts we have before and after we cook, while with propane that is not so easy. The induction cook top ready to go, costs less than most common fail parts in a propane system. We have propane for our grill. This is our back up, if you're worried you can't cook after a lightening strike. We have 800 ah, and 1000W. We are currently cruising in Maine.
As you're running the wires into that compartment which happens to be really close to where you actually want them, couldn't you put some kind of quick connect fitting on the front of the compartment that you could plug the panels into so you wouldn't need to run the wires through the chain channel?

Not a sailor but we do travel part time with an off road travel trailer and camp off grid. Our first trailer we added 400 amp lithium batteries and charged them with a 200 watt solar panel or generator when camping in trees or cloudy weather. Our current travel traitor has 1080 amp lithium batteries and 1200 watts solar. The original portable panels are extremely heavy and I have been impressed with the newer flexible panels for camping in shade. Also our travel trailer is all electric including induction cook top. Love it. We only use propane for hot water and heat. We travel year around and the trailer is rated to - 30° F. Love your channel, keep up the good work. I have always wondered why they make shade cloth black. It seems as if white or reflective would keep things even cooler.
I love this episode. I love watching you guys deal with solar and no shade sides are amazing. I live in a community where we have pontoon boats and we have a metal roof along the 24 feet of boat and we have curtains on both sides so we can drop the sun to the sun from deteriorating your eyes and the plastic because the sun the worst enemy rain never hurts the boat. It’s always the sun that looks so much more comfortable. Great job.

I've seen fold/flip down/up solar frames on the outside of the boats connecting to the rails that might allow you to run your portable solar panels with less shading and the panels will not take up any deck/trampoline space😁

We have these, and we love them. We do something similar where we put them away to go be a fast race/cruiser boat, and then when we beat everyone else to the next anchorage, we pull these out and load up the batteries again!

I have BoughRV standard solar panels (10-100w 9BB) and I love them, they are amazing and power at or better rated. I can only imagine what these will produce for you. Great choice. Happy trails, be safe.
Soooo, Sierra was right about A/C 😃. You can put ceramic tint on all your windows……they have heat rejection…….dont have to be dark tint……they can be clear. I have on my boat cabin windows 👍😎
It’s regular for PV pannels to produce more than the nominal output, because pannels are graded under 1000 wh and 25 C of sunlight. Where it’s often more 1200 wh under the tropics, it can go up to +20%
What a huge improvement those shades will be, we have similar shades on X Factor and we love them so much we tend to just leave them up most of the time. They also add some privacy when your in a tight anchorage or marina. Michael Scott, hahaha
Solar panels that are hot are less efficient. Flex panels that are glued or VHB taped to the deck get really hot. Adding corrugated PVC panels under the panels allows air to cool them and will improve efficiency slightly - but you can't walk on them because it will crush the corrugation.
How about adding a wind turbine too? I know a lot of people with sail boats that use them, they help a lot since wind is pretty much always there even during the night! So they are really effective. They usually have them attached to an arm that sticks out on the back and can move to the sides when needed.
Ever thought about adding in some wind turbine for added power? It’s starting to gain traction in the states not sure how feasible it would be on a boat but given wind can help offset the useage at night provided there is alittle wind
We use our boat differently being at our dock each evening and not anchoring - we don't like anchoring..... but yes to lithium batteries, our Solar is to keep the fridge running if the dock power fails (and it has).. Our galley is all electric so yes induction cook top, air fry microwave and small dishwasher... Yes to the heat pump and the flat screen TV.. We run the dishwasher while sailing and the solar handles the load, the external regulator on the alternator ensures that by the time we head back to the dock - the batteries are fully topped up.. So yes good on you for having sufficient solar to be comfortable... Have you considered a hydro generator?
I was wondering if you could use more rigid solar panels along the railing that mount to the upright posts that can flip up when done sailing and flip down vertical as a rail when sailing?
Have y’all considered a pellet grill? They make small units for tailgating/RVs. Some are completely stainless so they should hold up. The pellets need to stay dry, I use 6 gallon baseball bucket with a lid.
Can't you put a large solar panel at the back of the boat or is that where you pull up your dinghy. Wind generators how great they work day and night that would be a great back up and it could work together with the solar panels.
25:05 why would you put it on the outside? seems like the stick on snaps being exposed to the elements wouldn't make them last very long. Yes its less pleasing to the eye to have them on the inside, but maybe some suction mounts would be a better idea and have them on the inside or outside and they can be removed when the shades aren't in use.
Efficiency of those panels would probably improve if you put airflow underlay (like what keeps mattresses from molding) under them to help dissipate heat.
Hey Billy, I heard you say you worry about a lightning strike. If that's the case, why don't you install a lightning rod on your mast so you can protect your boat and all your electronics? It's basically just like some people put on their house. They put them on almost all very tall buildings. You should ask around, and you can most likely find how they install them on sail boats. Peace of mind is a lot better than taking a chance that someday you get a strike that blows the bottom out of your boat. Just a safety suggestion. It's worth it.
Maybe an Idea to put some of your new flexible panels on the new shade thingies you also installed. You could also attached them to a pool ( and the other end to the deck/trampoline and hoist up with a spare halliard as under an angle they probably produce more amps.
Don't get an Airfryer; You are both living a super healthy life. There is a lot of information available now regarding non stick (Tefal) I would get a portable single induction cooktop and a portable oven to use in the cockpit on hot days. Love the videos that U 2 share with us.
If you can move the boom way over that can help… and get a couple of non flex high output panels of the 400 watt panels on a davit or arch…that you can tilt. Much better….also remount all the flex panels with a corrugated panel under them to provide an air path for heat
Tip on AC : go to bed without AC and when you wake up 4 hours later turn it on for the rest of the night. Saves a bunch of power. You will be happy with the Yuma panels. Air fryer: get one. They are rated at 1500 watt but how long will you be using them for? Maybe 30 minutes? So 750 watt. Or alternatively, get a Sous Vide stick. A 750-1000 watt unit is plenty.
So I’m watching this video and I almost wish you edited it with the side shades first, because, I lived in a travel trailer for five years with a yacht LE300 wind turbine as well solar panels, but like you they didn’t generate enough, so I added more to my awning… it dawned on me that awning companies might serve themselves well to incorporate the two systems together, but perhaps you can figure a way to bungee your new portable solar panels to your sun shades? Just a thought.

You would probably get better input and output on your original + the extra solar panels permanently installed on top of your hardtop if you put something under it that will allow you to get airflow under your solar panels. My father who is now passed was an expert back in the day when they were full-timing RV and didn't like the flexible because there needs to be airflow beneath the solar panels. Then the O'Kelly's did a video on a friend of theirs set up that had the electric motors to run his huge catamaran, and one of the things he was showing the O'Kelly's was the layer below that raised up the solar panels and allowed airflow. It was like the mattress protection you put under your mattresses to keep them from molding. It might have been the same stuff. You can ask Nick about it though and he can tell you.
You’re original stick on solar panels will decrease output very quickly they are a popular choice because of their weight but output is ordinary at best,do a good test on the new panels and if they stand up then think about replacing the old ones because trust me they will fail

Watched you guys long enough to see that you 'know what you are doing ' . My last 4 panel + 2 batteries will be , installed by others . I need a Cert of Compliance for my house insurance , is your work ' covered by insurance ' ? Glad to hear you are not running your batteries too flat , maybe need another ? :-) Assume , Lithium type , needing a special type fire extinguisher , once my upgrade is done will install a small automatic fire prevention where my batteries are stacked , in my kitchen . Thanks for making me think of an automated system . One thing if one battery goes , 4 will not be fun . Inverter and batteries can be replaced , my house , not so . .
Not to be the RUclips University advisor, but if you are running diverse panel groups - meaning some in shade while others in Sun, you will be best of efficiency wise to group them onto different MPPT controllers. I cannot see your new layout but on your old layout I see ideally 3 MPPT controllers. One for the two stern panels and one each for the 4 port and starboard group of for panels.. Granted budget comes into play, but when real estate is a concern plus the lower efficiency of the flexible panels minimizing the loss due to shading of a single panel in a larger group will help over all efficiency. Almost every time you cut camera takes, there’s a loud pop happening. This is an easy fix, simply fade in/out the audio at the beginning and end of each clip. I have shade, antiglare covers made, allow air through, gives privacy except at night. The material is preferex. I am very happy with it.

We found black shades are great to heat up the area and provide shade and for cooler shade a white light weight sail cloth is better.

Why did you choose black screens, black attracts heat, and white the opposit ?
A darker canvas blocks more uv light from passing through. A white canvas wont be as effective in blocking the sun.

That should be standard, to prevent UV damage as well as heat reflection.
I have the ceramic all around on my car. And I love it. It makes it so much easier to get in when it’s 112 outside. You’ll love it.
Sence, you have a high output alternator, by adding or doubling your battery bank would go a long way in giving you the additional power back up

We just got the BougeRV panels too, try using Dielectric grease on all connectors to keep out corrosion and promote connectivity.

So I’m watching this video and I almost wish you edited it with the side shades first, because, I lived in a travel trailer for five years with a yacht LE300 wind turbine as well solar panels, but like you they didn’t generate enough, so I added more to my awning… it dawned on me that awning companies might serve themselves well to incorporate the two systems together, but perhaps you can figure a way to bungee your new portable solar panels to your sun shades? Just a thought.

You would probably get better input and output on your original + the extra solar panels permanently installed on top of your hardtop if you put something under it that will allow you to get airflow under your solar panels. My father who is now passed was an expert back in the day when they were full-timing RV and didn't like the flexible because there needs to be airflow beneath the solar panels. Then the O'Kelly's did a video on a friend of theirs set up that had the electric motors to run his huge catamaran, and one of the things he was showing the O'Kelly's was the layer below that raised up the solar panels and allowed airflow. It was like the mattress protection you put under your mattresses to keep them from molding. It might have been the same stuff. You can ask Nick about it though and he can tell you.
You’re original stick on solar panels will decrease output very quickly they are a popular choice because of their weight but output is ordinary at best,do a good test on the new panels and if they stand up then think about replacing the old ones because trust me they will fail
Hi Billy hi Sierra I've been watching your channel for about a year now or more, I've seen all your other boats now I'm glad I have that you have a New yacht. I see you putting on a brand new sunshade I'm wondering if it is it going to keep out the Mangrove noseeums? I would love to take a little cruise on your yacht but I'm terrified of the deep sea or being too far from shore. There's only one Captain I can think of that I would be willing to go on a boat ride with him but he doesn't have a yacht right now. That's the O'Kelly's. I hope they're okay! Take care stay safe

If the ends solar panels are more efficient why not use them as primary panels? You might get by with fewer actual panels with more power production.
Maybe those cockpit side shades could be a base for your portable solar panels while at anchor?
Thinking about doing a big awning in the front with the panels zippered on! Will give an update on that soon!

once my upgrade is done will install a small automatic fire prevention where my batteries are stacked , in my kitchen .

Not to be the RUclips University advisor, but if you are running diverse panel groups - meaning some in shade while others in Sun, you will be best of efficiency wise to group them onto different MPPT controllers. I cannot see your new layout but on your old layout I see ideally 3 MPPT controllers. One for the two stern panels and one each for the 4 port and starboard group of for panels.. Granted budget comes into play, but when real estate is a concern plus the lower efficiency of the flexible panels minimizing the loss due to shading of a single panel in a larger group will help over all efficiency. Almost every time you cut camera takes, there’s a loud pop happening. This is an easy fix, simply fade in/out the audio at the beginning and end of each clip. It’s a hassle but much better production quality and not as painful for us listening on headphones. Truly live your channel, energy, and lifestyle. Wishing you many years of blessings and sailing.
