It's so funny when you're grown and your cousin, who looks just like a homie figure, tells you his daughter found his homie collection and said, "Why do they look like you?"
They were in a little machine in my favorite teriyaki spot lol. I think it's just a gumball or sticker machine now. I didn't know there was such a big history behind them.
I grew up in Central California. The homies toy line has a soft spot in my heart. I went to a predominately white school in my early elementary years. I bought a pack of homies Valentines cards circa 2005 for my class in 1st grade. When passing them out, the teacher had hid the cards in the back of her cabinet. She didn’t pass them out until I asked them to. She pulls them out and says, “who would buy these”. Haha, iconic moment in my life.
I'm a Latina community based therapist for kids. I use a set of about 20 homies I collected as a kid and bought from E bay and use them for play therapy. Most of the kids I give therapy to are Latino. Their parents usually trip out. Lol
As an Italian American from NJ, I collected a few homies from the coin machines. I was so excited when I got one of the girls. Bc of the flag colors and the clothes style I thought they were Italian gangsters at first, I had no idea about the Italian line! They should have been marketed in NYC and NJ!
That’s dope to hear you found them at a Chinese spot. When I go to Mexico to see my fam, there is a taco joint with dragon ball z art painted all over haha Cool to see different cultures appreciating each other
Yup the Chinese buffet I grew up around had an entire room full of toy vending machines like 3 of them were full of just homies and also the homies stickers I always looked forward to getting them on the way out 😅
Same here in West TX. My pops had over 200 figures! Had a massive model lowrider/homie collection in a glass china cabinet back in the day. Shit rivaled my DBZ/anime figure collection I have now... 😂
Sidebar I laugh when my kids talk about how stupid the dress code is at school. Brings me back. People would wear this Metallica shirt "Metal up your A$$" and it was like a contest to see who could wear it the longest through the day without getting busted and having to wear the gym shirt. One love
Most of of the time that did nothing. I remember in elementary school one kid had to turn his pissing Calvin shirt inside out, but you could still see it clear as day.
I feel that. I had a friend who used to wear an Ozzy shirt. It was him, from the back, bum necked. I remember him wearing it a handful of times before he stopped. I'm guessing the principal caught him.
My mom had a huge collection of Homies and Rascals. But sadly after she got over the Chicano phase she threw them away. My tia kept some of them and now my uncle has them on dispaly with his lowrider models
