Oh Danny, normally that newspaper wrapping has been perfect for flower spikes- even really tall ones! I think these are some bad luck you had. I've had a lot of orchids come in perfect shape to me with the newspaper wrapping. What lovely orchids you got!! :) That cattleya is awesome!!
***** this is the first time that I get orchids in spike in shredded paper, maybe they were just brutal when packing I don't know.. but I find the schwerter packing muuuuuuuch better, there is nothing that touches the spikes cos even shredded paper can damage it due to vibrations if the spikes or flowers are too fragile.
Yeah, they must've stuffed it in there. Other places like Kawamoto orchids in Hawaii do a lovely and gentle packing process with shredded paper, and they show it on video. Still - sorry about your flowers. At least it's not like my nelly isler where ALL the buds blasted off, haha!!
I do enjoy your unboxing, Danni! So funny with your magic screwdriver. I'm sorry to see that the ones you ordered were damaged in one form or other. But, with your special TLC, the new additions to your orchid family will be happy and reward you with beautiful flowers!
Bummer about the flowers, but I LOVE that Tropical Pointer. I have the 'Cheetah' clone, grown from seedling and just coming into its first bloom. Fingers crossed as I've been waiting for some time to see this one. Yours is so much bigger than mine. Looks like a really healthy plant. For a Cattleya, this one does not like to stay dry for very long at all. It did so much better this year with waterings every couple of days in a clay pot/course medium. Good luck with yours, it's beautiful!
I love the Cattleya!!! Absolutely gorgeous! ...but yea I agree Schwerter is awesome in how they package their orchids...one of the best...They really do shine in that department! Great video!
PictureMaria1 Thanks Maria, well all is ok but it just breaks your heart to see broken spikes on new orchids :P good thing the plants are looking good, that makes up for it ;)
Hey Danny, did you have the chance to re-order from Wichmann? It would be nice to have a review of this nursery in you series at some point. Thank you for sharing
What a great purchases, love , love ,love all your new orchids ( I know some of them for your friends) but anyways it's great. Don't be sad about your flowers , they'll bloom again. Shipping is always tricky , if you'd order from Larry's orchids, they wouldn't even ship orchid with blooms. So you are lucky to get such a beautiful orchid:))))
The 'Galaxy' is a beauty and well worth the price for that size plant. They're all nice-size plants... and it looks like you're going to need to negotiate with neighbors real soon for use of their balony space... :)
Hey Danni, beautiful orchids u got 'urself! Am sure 'ur going to be a good mum to those babies. In the US most vendors use shredded news paper it works great here. I just got 13 orchids from Larry's, 12 out of 13 got to me in good condition. The 13th orchid was in rough shape, it didn't have roots!!! I am trying to rehabilitate it. Anyway I know u will take good care of them and off course they're in good hands. Just keep us updated if you can!!!!!
PrincessKatarinnah Kayra yes I do see that paper works, must have been neglect from the people who packed them then :P I will keep you updated! think the Vitellina will bloom :P
How is your encyclia vitellina doing? How was the media and the roots when you repotted it? I also bought an encyclia vitellina from Wichmann, but though the price was the same, mine was only half the size of yours. When I repotted it, there was very old and compact sphagnum moss in the middle of the pot, and the rest of the media (the bark) had the most awfully strong smell of mold! It was a terrible smell! The roots were ok, but they would certainly soon have died if I hadn't repotted and changed the media. The bulbs are slightly wrinkled, and the new bulb has grown very slowly. I think it will recover, but I'm a little disappointed. This plant was clearly too long in that old media. And it should have costed less, since it was smaller. It is, however, flowersize. It has apparently bloomed from old bulbs. Maybe Wichmann doesn't have a very good quality control when selling orchids. Some Finnish customers had worse problems, at least those who ordered the garden orchids they sell. One customer bought a Dactylorhitza majalis orchid, but the pot came empty (only media, but no orchid!). She also bought 2 Epipactis palustris and 2 Epipactis sabine, and even though they were all the same price, 2 of them were very, very small compared to the others. Another Finnish customer paid for an adult vanda coerulea, but got an young plant instead. I supposed most of the other orders were ok, and hopefully these were the exception, but it seems their quality control is not good enough. I probably won't buy from there again. How was the media from your orchids? Was it moldy and stinky too?
Andrea Soilander Hi Andrea, I didn't repot the vitellina just yet but I will soon. The media smells a bit bad indeed but the orchid seems ok root wise, I am more concerned about the color break on the flowers so I am pretty scared of touching it lol The Cattleya had a decent media, not too new in any case but was ok. One of my friend's orchids was misslabeled so she ended up buying something else than advertised so she was upset. Overall no I won't actually buy from them again, I am well aware that some orchids might be in bad shape, they are living things and can perish even if you do your best, but the ratio of sick/weird orchids from Wichmann is too big compared to Schwerter. With Schwerter I got maybe 3-4 orchids that were questionable in 3 years (out of 100 plus orchids cos I ordered for my friends as well and unpacked them) and I got refunded, it's an ok ratio. But I hear too many bad stories about Wichmann, not sure how they won the client award or something. I got better orchids from the ebay seller from Poland, his orchids were in great condition :) I don't know what is happening but I think they don't do a great job with maintenance.
WOW Danni All the orchids are stunning, and huge, shame about the damage tho, I had an orchid wrapprd in news paper it too was damage and out of its pot, it;s not doing too well, But I'm sure with your care they will do just fine, keep us posted :)
Rosemary457 sorry to hear :( some people had good transport with shredded paper, some didn't, so I guess it depends on the person packing the orchid as well.
Sad that the flowers & buds got damaged. :( But I'm certain you'll get them to grow and bloom again! As for German online shops I can also recommend Currlin, their shipping is cheap (6€ for Germany, 15€ for EU) but efficient (at least that's my experience!) and the orchids are great. They also immediately shipped after I ordered and it arrived the next day.
ViolettSkyy I might try an order there too just to experiment if they bring something I really want :) thanks for the info!

Hi Danni! Woah there is some spacey wacey timey wimey stuff going on there! Soo sorry to see that the orchids got damaged in the transport! I was really annoyed with the shredded paper too! Especially because I have eczema and the dust annoyed my skin so badly! Ughh! But they told me the shredded paper keeps the orchid moist - err well if you say soo... duh! The Tropical Pointer "Galaxy" is humongous! And my own will be just a maturing one! Oh noes! However the Beallara's are massive! Like a bush not an orchid! Which is good, because compared to the supermarket or any random nursery version is like 1/3 of the size!
Robert Gębczyński ahahaha indeed they are big babies. Wasn't expecting the catt to be so big but I can see it's an old specimen catt, really nice :D and for that price.. I would have gotten it without flowers lol about the moist thing, I would prefer orchids in dry environments, anything moist and not ventilated is dangerous lol
It is such a bummer that the flower spike came broken, and the gorgeous floeers also suffered on the last one. You should definitely leave feedback and packaging suggestion for them!
hello danni, i hope your orchids will be doing fine. i used to order 4-5 time from wichmann but i dont do it any more because i had a very very bad experience with them. and the prices as you said especially for cattleya orchids are incredibly high, for some about 40 euro. the prices from schwerter are only half of that but i have 50 percent more chances to get a healthy orchid. so my personal choice is schwerter))
NinaVanini Hi Nina, thanks for sharing the info, yeah I do prefer Schwerter too, but sometimes others stores have one particular orchid that I really want so I go and risk it :P not too often though :) I would say Wichmann is good for the orchids themselves but not blooming ones. Can I ask what was the issue you had with them?
MissOrchidGirl i bought in total 6 cattleya orchids from Wichmann (not all together), the plants were good at the first glance, thats why i ordered again and again, but when the time came for the plants to bloom, 5 out of six 6 cattleyas flowered with color break... well and then I understood why some of them had small strange streaks and spots on the leaves. with cattleya orchids it is quite obvious ((( only one one catt which is blooming now seems to be ok, i keep my fingers crossed that she wont get it, i love her so much!!
NinaVanini oh my that is a serious issue. If this ever happens again then contact the store and tell them. It does happen sometimes that we get a problem orchid but 5 out of 6 is a provider issue. I got a virused orchid from schwerter as well, I tested it 3 times and came out positive. I wrote to them and they immediately took it down from sale to test the lot they had. They also refunded me. It's not the store's fault either, the provider should guarantee virus free orchids. From what they told me they had some issues with Asian providers, they have a spread of virus in their nurseries. So it really isn't the store's fault either and I'm sure they try their best to have healthy orchids and you telling them about it will help them as well, they won't buy from that provider again.
MissOrchidGirl thank you, you are right, i will do this in furture. i just thought it is difficult to prove that they came to me already virus-infected, because some plants were at least 6 month at my home before they flowered. And most shops guarantee only the first month that the plant is healthy. Some small spots on the leaves were not that bad and i dont have a test kit at home, i think i should order one and test all new plants. But when cattleya flowers with color break and necrotic spots, i think you can be pretty sure what it is. I have some problem plants from Schwerter as well, but the rate of healthy plants i bought from them was much higher.thank you))
NinaVanini wait a bit before you order the tests, at the beginning of May I will have a huge give away and I will have some discount codes for Agdia tests ;) yes I always have tests ready, cos you never know. Yep some signs are very noticeable with virus, as well if the plant isn't vigorous and loses new growth for no reason, that's another sign (for CyMV anw). Will make a video on some new tests soon, just got them from Agdia :D
I'm happy you finally got your order, and wow, these orchids are BEAUTIFUL!!! The tropical pointer is much bigger than I imagined. When I was thinking of ordering it, I read in a Finnish orchid magazine that her size was around 20 cm. This is clearly much bigger than that!!! How tall is this orchid? It looks like at least 40 cm! But wow, the flowers are absolutely amazing! What a pity they were a little damaged in the transport, but the plant itself seems to be healthy. I was curious to see the encyclia, since I too ordered one from Wichmann. It looks so beautiful and healthy! Let's hope the second sheath will develop, so that your plant will be blooming soon. By the way, I enjoyed a lot these two recent unboxing videos with the magic tricks. :D Now, where could I find a screwdriver like that one. ;)
Andrea Soilander Andrea, my own Tropical Pointer is much shorter, but I grow it shallow and very bright. I know Maxillaria get long and lanky if grown in lower light, so it's probably the same with Cattleyas. Many plants I've bought from nurseries have much darker leaves than mine. I think they grow in the lowest light possible to bloom the plant, as it saves them water and resources. I've seen photos of other full grown plants that are much taller, though. I'm sure I'll find out this season since it's finally mature.
Andrea Soilander Hi Andrea, yes I wasn't expecting the pointer to be so tall, think it is about 40 cm if you could the spike as well, it's an old orchid it seems. Hope your encyclia will arrive with its spike intact :) the screw driver oh you need to see the Doctor about that :)))
MissOrchidGirl Oh no, I wanted it to stay small. I'm running out of room! LOL I think you're right though. I've seen some taller plants on the net and all of them looked to have some age to them.
I'm so sorry about the damaged flowers but you got some fabulous orchids! Can't believe you got that last one for €22 !!! Wow really nice orchids danny. I like all your videos much they are very interesting. I have commented u many times but u don't reply. I don't know whether u r able to see my comment. Pls if u can reply me let me know.
Sorry, I had been watching videos all day n night and was just excited about seeing more of the orders. I do enjoy watching you. Thanks for sharing Miss Orchid 😆

Robb Forehand Thanks for the tip Robb, it actually was the only one that had a moist media, will be careful to water it in time ;)
They still look wonderful, but I can totally understand your disappointment with the broken spikes and leaves. That last one is beautiful!
Orchid Dreaming yes but they will bloom again, I got over it :P the cattleya is already losing its flowers so I will repot soon :)
I love the Cattleya!!! Absolutely gorgeous! ...but yea I agree Schwerter is awesome in how they package their orchids...one of the best...They really do shine in that department! Great video!

I love David Tenant. All my favorite episodes are starred by him. I just placed an order for a few neofinetia. Can't wait for them to arrive.
Jackie Fu hahaha one must have an unending crush on David Tennant or else he is not worthy lol

Hahahaah, your editing had me cracking up. xD Oohhh, Tropical Pointer 'Galaxy' is beautiful, I have Tropical Pointer 'Cheetah.'

Robb Forehand yes it might be why but I think the age of the orchid plays a role too, this one seems to be quite old, at least 10 years
MissOrchidGirl Oh no, I wanted it to stay small. I'm running out of room! LOL I think you're right though. I've seen some taller plants on the net and all of them looked to have some age to them.
I'm so sorry about the damaged flowers but you got some fabulous orchids! Can't believe you got that last one for €22 !!!
My son had to come in to see your Doctor Who themed unboxing and he was impressed up until half way thorough. But that's because he's not interested in orchids!
He did point out that we both use the same vanda bucket for watering. Must be a European thing ;-)
Gardening at Douentza lol there's just so much you can theme a video lol the buckets are actually garbage bins.. but they were too good not to buy :))
Gardening at Douentza q
Just when I thought you couldn't get any more awesome, I then find out you're a Dr Who fan too!! 👍👌😁
Hi Danny! Can you make a video update on your minimark phalaenopsis keiki?
Thanks! :)
Vytautas Poška I gave him away to someone, not sure how he is doing, I only have the mother plant which you can see in my recent video update on my sick orchids.
Hi, I hope your doing fantastical . So I just got BllRA. Marfitch 'Howard's Dream' yesterday I paid $46.00 dollars in United States America. The orchid is done blooming but it was the last one they had and I fell for the beautiful purple blooms so I took the risk . But I see no sign of new growth on it and just repotted today . Should I be worried ? and if you got some care tips for it please help ! lol Honestly was hoping that the new growth was covers under the layers of moss but as I found out today it has none . So now I'm sitting here trying to become a nervous mess. lol
Ellofez well you need to have patience, they will produce new growths when they consider it's time to, usually a month or so after the spike dies. It's not a rule, but it can take that long :) I have a video on beallaras here ruclips.net/video/z9vPys9PNus/видео.html
Cool I'm willing to wait . Thank you like always . Oh I just ordered a BLC. Rustic Spots in spike whis me good luck they do not get broken in transit . I am so excited !!
I also Love that orange one with the crushed blooms she is stunning! Thank you for the link to your videos.
Ellofez the orange Cattleya? yes she is my pride and joy, I always wanted a tropical pointer and I will order some more varieties of this hybrid, it's just stunning to look at :D
