@@Proftrof You think that's funny? Some people are so good at this game they full on Conquer Hell and more than one of them have relocated their dining hall and kitchen down there just to have endless 'Tonight we dine in hell!' gags.
The thing with Dwarf Fortress, is it is procedurally generated and a sandbox. There is a framework of mechanics of physics and behavior, and the rest is filled in mostly by interaction or random. Which results in some really crazy stuff, especially when something new is added to the game. The creator in an interview talked about how adding the mechanic to spill drinks in the tavern resulted in all the cats dying. The spilled alcohol would get on the cat's paws, which triggered the mechanic that the cat would lick his paws to clean it. The licking mechanic ended up triggering the alcohol intoxication mechanic, which made the cat drunk. Long story short all the cats got alcohol poisoning and died without the creator intending it, just because he added spilled drinks. The game is full of weird unintended chain reactions, which will occasionally get fixed in a patch
the problem wasn't that it triggered the Intoxication mechanic. The game confused the drop of beer for an entire mug and the cat ingested more than its own bodyweight in alcohol.
They are adding a more modern UI for the Steam release of Dwarf Fortress, but I don't think it'll be that much easier to learn. The new UI will just make it so you don't get lost as much.
>learn in less than an hour that would be very hard; most of the learning comes from getting used to controls (which is not hard - it just time-consuming at the start; but you get familiar with it real fast) on the plus side, UI and graphics has been updated lately, so it's somewhat easy now best way to learn DF is still watching how other people play
@@Proftrof I personally enjoy Adventure mode quite a bit. Well, honesly, there isn't much about it progression wise due to how world generations works, but combat is really really fun, with the ability to literally strangle ppl, and chop off limbs, pick em up and then bash the owner to death with them. My favorite is to grab a helmet off the enemy, pull it off, and then stab the dude in now unprotected face. Also, adventure mode is much easier to learn then foretress mode, you can indeed learn most of the basic stuff in a few hours i think. Worth it just for a combat imo

Just so you and anyone else who doesn't know, you can see a video frame by frame by pressing " , " OR " . " for backwards and forwards respectively. If you're keyboard doesn't have these theres probably an equivalent if you look it up. Just thought id mention it since pausing a video or slowing it down is a pain in the ass.
@@Proftrof You can also pause with "k", which is a lot more precise than trying to pause by clicking and won't result in accidentally toggling fullscreen.

Ah or he can wait for the steam release, because mouse support will make the learning curve very fast down to like 5 -10 hours depending on how fast ypou pick up stuff. its really all abotu the hotkeys and menus that are bothersome if you start out and slow down everything by alot
"Are there Balrogs in this game" My friend, there are creatures in this game that will make the balrog whimper in a corner as it prays for a quick death.
You will just have to wait for the Steam Release of Dwarf Fortress, where there will be a official Tileset and I believe a tutorial and even a GUI, so you don't have to deal with remembering 5 million keys. Hoping to see alot more reactions to Sseth stuff!
I don't think you can learn DF in an hour, I started playing a few years ago and when the first time I played I totally gave up because I didn't understand a thing. Just download it and play it, I never checked a guide, I just played and learned through failing horribly. You've got to try it, if it caught your atention, try it, probably one the best games I've ever played, and totally free too, like sseth said, its like an abusing lover, and you'll totally come back for more.
Dwarf fortress is free, but he is working on a paid steam version. Which will have some graphics at least. That said you might like Gnomoria which is a watered down version of Dwarf Fortress, or Rim World which is a Sci Fi wasteland version, they arent as insane as Dwarf Fort but definitely more playable.
The Steam versino of the game is nearing completion/release, it has better graphics and reworked controls. That one should be reasonably playable even for non-autists.
it's 2021 ...have you figured out yet that you don't have to pause precisely on the frame you are reacting to, since an average youtube watcher is NOT a goldfish?
What Sseth discovered was a literal pit into hell. If you dig too deep you get a massive horde of randomly generated demons swarming your fortress.
LOL
