Hi Steve, im Gary from UK a 69 yr old bass first timer but loving it, now I've been binge watching your videos, so amazing and so very helpfull, can I please
Sorry wrong button duh!! Can I please ask how you mute your strings? You play with your left hand like a guitarist ie you seem to spider walk your fingers whereas many others have their fingers flatter on the frets and I can't see you muting with your right hand. I'm guessing your years of experience shows your effortless muting. Would it possible to explain your way. Sorry to sound like an idiot but muting is becoming my nightmare. Kind regards Gary.
Hey Gary- It can be tricky for beginners to figure out muting, but once you get it, it'll become second nature. Both hands take part in muting. Most passive ringing of strings comes when you're playing the D or G string and the A or E will ring. When I'm playing on the D or G, my ring finger on my right had rests on the E string and mutes it. Also, as you alternate index and middle fingers on your right hand as you play, they fall in a way that will control the open strings. Play really slow and examine how your fingers fall and you can see the mechanics.
This is it folks. I have been scouring RUclips for videos on music theory and bass lessons, however this is by far the best tutorial I have seen so far. Definitively worth the watch as this playlist is a goldmine. I am sure the paid lessons are also great if you wanna take a look at that. Thank you very much for your work Steve. I ordered my bass and will be following along.

At last someone who can take the time to explain 'how to' in simple language and diagrams . I can't wait to get tuned up and playing my first bass guitar. Thanks Steve, keep up the good work.
This is the best base guitar teacher I have ever seen or heard. He simplifies it so well that anyone will learn from him lessons. I played bass guitar for over 10 years in live bands, and I have taught a few friends, but I could never explain it so well.
As a piano player since childhood (for leisure), having now just started trying to learn to play bass I knew the chord/triads music theory, even the chord progressions (which surprised me, since it has been YEARS since I actively studied this stuff!) - this video was super-helpful in transitioning that understanding to the bass fretboard, as well as being a useful reminder of the basics of music theory. Great stuff, Steve, thanks!!!
Brilliant! I’m a guitar teacher but I have a few bass students I just wanted to make sure I was teaching the best way with the bass lessons many thanks from Nelson bays New Zealand.
Thanks Aurora, I appreciate it. It's great to hear from people that are picking up the bass and starting to learn. Thanks for watching and please share the video.
I just purchased a bass guitar to learn to play at church cos we don't have a bass guitarist. I was looking for tutorials and I;m so glad i landed here. The best teaching ever. Im so glad i found this page. Thank you so much for investing in my life through this video.
Steve, Thank you man. I bought my first bass guitar 6 months ago at age 55 and have bought "teach yourself " books enrolled in online lessons and tried my best to understand it all and got basically nowhere. 20 minutes with you dude and the lightbulb above my head lit up. I can't begin to express how grateful I am. I really believe that I can do this now
That is awesome! Stay with it and it will come. And if you get stuck and need some 1 on 1 lessons I offer them via Zoom. Keep playin' brother. All the best.
@@stevekonbass Thanks man I'm just spending time working my way through what I've learned from your first lesson. Taking it slow just now until I get it down and then start to increase the speed. I really feel like I'm actually making progress. Thankyou so much man
That's awesome! It's important to practice every day, especially as a beginner. Stay consistent, this way the knowledge stays in your head and your hands stay used to these new movements. If you don't pick up the bass for a few days you'll probably find you took a step back. Consistency is the key.
@@stevekonbass that's so true I try do at least an hour or so every day just trying to get the muscle memory so my fingers just do it. I'm struggling a bit with coordinating my plucking fingers but I know I'll get there If I keep at it. Thanks for your replys Steve I do appreciate it.
Holy crap after years of playing I finally find a lesson that teaches me the "why" of what I'm doing. I remember back when I was first starting off, my teacher would just have me memorize everything without actually explaining it in a way I could actually understand what is going on.
Hello Mr. Steve. 1st off Thank you for your time in helping me dust off the brain & helping me uncover my music, & notes. I have not touch my guitar or my bass & especially my piano for over 25 years😑😒 all because of work work work work😵💫. I've now have time to relearn what I forgot & I found you. What you are doing is definitely teaching & if you had a class here in Northern Utah I would be there. The chords on the board I am also writing the notes on my sheet music. Thanks Again For Your Time From Northern Utah USA 🤠......... Enjoy..........
Well welcome back to the world of music! Never thought of myself as a teacher, but a guy that has been doing it for 38 years who is sharing knowledge. Thanks for the comment and "Hello Utah!"
This is what you call a proper bass lesson. No long intros, or sponsored by.... In fairness I am going to have to watch this a number of times before it sinks in, but the format is conducive to that, as you can skip using the whiteboard as a reference. Thanks for sharing.
The comments I've read say it all. I've been trying to come to grips with the bass. In 30 minutes you have unlocked many of my stumbling blocks.THANK YOU
I have looked at dozens of tutorials here on RUclips, and this is by far and away the best one out there. You go slow, and I love the diagrams and explanations.. Plus you don't waste a lot of time trying to "prove" how good of a player you are! I have played guitar and ukulele plus a bunch of other instruments since I was a kid, but never even touched a bass until a couple of days ago. I think I now have a working knowledge of how to play it, and the theory, which no one has ever been able to explain to me before. So that was good too. I am 74, and am looking forward to getting my own bass which is on order. My main interest is in just providing a simple back-up for the ukulele group, and maybe sometimes for a gospel group I play in as well. So now to learn some simple accompaniments to use as a background and to help keep everyone on time. Thanks again so much! I learned a lot watching your video! The best out there!
Oh my God you are a life saver. I have the passion for the guitar but sadly I have no income high enough to get a teacher. I have searched the entire RUclips for a person who can simply the guitar for me to understand and you have done exactly well. Please keep posting more of this beginners stuff. Even the highest guitarist will still need it. Nice job
This is the best beginner lesson I have ever seen. It's so easy to understand that I just figured out that if you start on another fret, the same principal applies. You can forget the names of the notes and just use the corresponding numbers. Thank you Steve!
I grew up with violing, cello, then bass, playing classic or Orchestra music, so by the time I got into jazz & rock music, all I knew was basic note-playing, and improvisation or solos were never done, until I tried out for the 'famous' Ohio U. Jazz band. I quit music to concentrate on my double-major, but I still have my guitars.
Great teaching Steve. Have played strats for over 54 years, am 68 now, an old schoolfriend here in the UK has just picked up his first ever guitar - a Squier bass. I'm putting together some lesson plans for him, your video(s) are the only lessons I've found that hack it. Your students are lucky folks! Big thanks from out here.😊
This video is a game changer. It packs so much into a short, concise, clear package but it doesn’t move too fast or jump around. Amazing work Steve. Thank you for this!!
Whole and Half Step explanation actually blew my mind. No other tutorial I’ve seen so far has mentioned that and the other teachers weren’t bad 😂… you just took it to that other level which was so nice to see
Steve's classes are in a league of their own. I like the way that in a mere 30 minutes goes from tuning to notes on the fret to patterns. Then unto chords on the guitar in relation to playing along with the bass to how to play chord progression, all in a nursery style way. I have learnt even the musical language of 145. He is the real Macoy.
WOW!!!!!!!! By far the best your teaching and delivery skills are brilliant so many videos I watched and not one could get into my hard head but you did I get it I get now thank you. Will keep watching.
You are the RUclips teacher that has finally gotten me to understand notes, scales and chords. Your teaching style is second to none. You broke everything do to the Simplist form. Thank you so much. It finally clicked in my head. I owe you buddy 🤘

@stevekonbass oh, I'm definitely going through all of them. If only this first lesson did so much impact, I can only imagine what the rest of them can do. I'm super stocked to learn more! Thank you so much.
I've been a Deejay for the past forty years and have done various music production within the last 4. I have always been fascinated with the bass but have procrastinated until now. My wife purchased a bass for my 61st and I'm glad that I've embarked on your channel. Thanks for starting me out on a simplistic approach Steve. It's greatly appreciated.🎸
This is a great lesson. I’m a beginner ….left handed with a left handed bass. Nice and slow and clear so we left handers can transpose in a follow along manner. Mel Bay has a left handed Bass Chord picture book that is a great tool as an compliment to this lesson. Thanks for this sharing Steve.
Been watching bass and guitar tutorials for over a year now but this one is the one that resonates with me the most as a lyric writer. Many thanks. Really helpful.
Greetings Steve, I've been playing bass for 35 years, teaching for almost 30. Man what you teach in this video is absolute gold information for anyone who picks up our instrument. The pace in which you instruct is perfect. I am in fact going to direct All of my new beginning students to watch and bookmark this video. I truly think just saved alot of young new players a ton of cash with this. Instruction rates in my area is 25 dollars a half hr. So thank you Steve! Cheers to you dude! Up the Irons!! ✨🍻✨
That's awesome to hear coming from another bassist David. I appreciate that. From the viewer response I have received I gather I've helped beginners connect the dots so I'm glad I could do that.
Thank god I watched this video first. I just got my first bass guitar. I wanted one for years, but didn’t think I had time. I picked it out of the gift catalog for my anniversary at work. I always dug bass guitarists, but I never knew how they figured out what notes to play when accompanying a guitar. This video explained it so well, and gives me so many great things as a beginner to start with and practice on. Thank you very much Steve
You're welcome and welcome to the world of music! Enjoy the journey. Here's another video to help you connect the dots: ruclips.net/video/CxkZ1enQ3ZU/видео.html
This is the best most comprehensive beginner not only bass but music theory lesson I've ever watched. I've been taking piano lessons for the past six months (from a great teacher) and this just summed up the first few months of what I've been practicing. Thank you so much for this!
Hey Steve, I've been playing bass for a long time off and on since my senior year in high school (I know I started late) and have been successful learning by ear in a gospel church and then years in a popular funk band here in CT. I have been embarrassed to tell people I didn't know music theory or my bass neck but my ear always bought me through! I have to admit, this lesson was truly a blessing for me. Knowing where you are on your neck and how the notes relate really takes the mystery and unsure feelings out of playing. Your a fantastic teacher and thoughtful to the process. Thank you man for this lesson, I can't wait to go through this video again so I can REALLY learn "the basics" Thank you again and happy bassing!!!
Truly glad I can help David. Never be embarrassed brother to ask a question. Most, if not all, musicians I've played with in my lifetime are down to Earth and ready to share their knowledge. Most of us are ear players, (Paul McCartney and Eddie Van Halen have said they play by ear) but the theory helps in navigation of the bass and understanding what everyone else in the band is doing. No matter what the age or experience, there's always stuff to learn. The second lesson where I talk about playing in minor might help you too.
@@stevekonbass Looking forward to it. I'll have to digest this one first 😀 I love the fact that i can play almost anything but would really love to know what the heck I was doing on an intellectual level! I'll get there!
I am a beginner, but I'm very mathematical. I really loved the way you broke the major notes into triads and sequences. You helped me make a breakthrough! Thank you!
This is fantastic. Steve has a very natural teaching approach, no gimmicks, just sound fundamentals. I will be basing my practice on this one lesson. Wish me luck! Thanks Steve.
Been always scared of these music notes , seems I'd never get my dream of learning & playing the guitar cause of the notes / theory ,they sounded like another foreign language but thanks to you for giving me the courage to understand these man .. never knew music was this easy .. now I get my chance to learn and play for the church 😅😅 .. God bless you
You will get better. Stay consistent with your practice and you'll see improvement. If there ever is something you can't seem to play, slow it down until you get it. Slowing down is the key to getting a passage right.
I'm a 70yo who has always loved to listen to the hard work others have put in. I've always been interested in bass guitar and cello, and so I've decided to stop free loading off others, and learn to play these instruments for myself. He is a bloody good teacher and explains and presents it so well that I don't feel pressured and look forward to some fun times, before I get called to the great band in the sky. Fantastic. You're welcome. When you're comfortable with that try this one: ruclips.net/video/vg9rOPD1ByA/видео.htmlsi=wAUl6cpr7rwdiHzZ
You're welcome! Hope you enjoy playing bass.
@@stevekonbasshow can i avail the book which you mentioned?
That book was just blank and my teacher would write in the lesson we did each week.
Brilliant! I’m a guitar teacher but I have a few bass students I just wanted to make sure I was teaching the best way with the bass lessons
many thanks from Nelson bays New Zealand.
You're welcome! And "Hello from South Carolina USA!"
For stating the obvious one more time: this is the best beginners lesson I´ve seen. As a complete beginner, I thank you for the enlightenment.
Thanks Aurora, I appreciate it. It's great to hear from people that are picking up the bass and starting to learn. Thanks for watching and please share the video.
This is the best instructor I have ever come across when it comes bass guitar lessons. Thanks Steve
Thank you!
My god finally someone who knows how to simplify things. I just learned/understand 1000% more than I knew before I watched this!!!
Glad to hear it helped!
@@stevekonbass It certainly did. Thank you sir!!
A friend will receive this video as he wants to learn to play the Bass. Thank you for the clear and simple beginner steps offered.
Thanks for passing it along William.
Wow that really helped a lot 👍
I just purchased a bass guitar to learn to play at church cos we don't have a bass guitarist. I was looking for tutorials and I;m so glad i landed here. The best teaching ever. Im so glad i found this page. Thank you so much for investing in my life through this video.
Thank you! I appreciate that. Please share the video if you can. That helps to keep it in circulation.
Only man who teaches me well on RUclips so calm and composed clear exactly what a bass beginner needs to watch
Thank you! Hope you enjoy the music journey.
Excellent communicator + Clear example = Great Instructor
Great to hear that Gary, thanks.
I have been looking for a lesson like this for a long time. This is the easiest explanation on the internet of how to play the bass guitar. Cheers!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh man, this is so good! Basics and employment and no faff!
Wow.. now THIS is Teaching. Thanks for sharing these!! (I'm a 50yo just starting my journey into playing the bass!)
Enjoy the journey! Have fun!
Holy crap after years of playing I finally find a lesson that teaches me the "why" of what I'm doing. I remember back when I was first starting off, my teacher would just have me memorize everything without actually explaining it in a way I could actually understand what is going on.
Great workshop Steve!
Thanks Chuck.
I've been looking in RUclips bass lesson program and found no one like this very helpful lesson to learn play bass guitar. Thank you so much sir .
You're welcome! Here's the up to date lessons playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLsFosTB39eVBVllLkZP_RAIjNmviv8nYe
Best beginner bass lesson I’ve seen yet. Thank you
You're welcome and thanks!
Hello Mr.
In 30 minutes you have unlocked many of my stumbling blocks.THANK YOU
That's great to hear Warren!
Very good I love your lessons
Thanks Theodore.
For people just starting out this is a great teacher
Thank you! Enjoy the journey. Ya never know where music will take you.
Fun and easy to follow.. Ladies and gents, I officially have a bass tutor 💯💯
Welcome aboard!
Thanks for explaining this "fundamental basic stuff"! Now I start to connect the dots.
I think this is the best video I've seen explaining this stuff.
Thank you! Glad the video shed some light on theory for you.
I agree. He is so organized in his explanation.
Exactly! I needed to see how to connect the dots. Now, I feel like I'm getting somewhere.
I too agree as an absolute beginner I have learned a lot from his tutorials very simple and easy to follow.
There are lots of guys know how to play bass, but teaching without boring is equal to being expert. You are doing it well Steve. Thanks a lot.
Thank you!
Great lesson ! I've been noodling around for 2 years . I'm 62 and just found you made sense of what ive been struggling with . thank you !
You're welcome Chris. Glad to help.
All I needed to understand . Thank' you. Good man. Peace be with you.
And with you too.
3y old video and I just learned so much, seemed all this evaded me for so long but making progress now, thank you
Thanks great to hear.
Nice job
Glad I could help ya Bate.
This is the best beginner lesson I have ever seen. It's so easy to understand that I just figured out that if you start on another fret, the same principal applies. You can forget the names of the notes and just use the corresponding numbers. Thank you Steve!
You are welcome!
Big thanks from out here.😊
Thank you!!
i like the way this guy explain things..
I'm new to bass. Been playing guitar for years.. Great lessons probably one of the best videos. I came across so far.
you are so great teacher I like your style, next day i start playing the Bass Guitar because of you, thank you so much
Hey that's great Gabi. Have fun with your journey!
This video is a game changer. It packs so much into a short, concise, clear package but it doesn’t move too fast or jump around. Amazing work Steve. Thank you for this!!
Ah, thanks for the comment Paul. Glad the lesson was a help.
Dude this is the best video I have seen on youtube bass lessons...so well explained and down to earth...cudo's to you
Thanks brother, I appreciate it. Please share the video with any of your musician buddies. Helps to keep it in circulation.
There are "learn to play bass" channels with hundreds of thousands of subs, but this video has been the most useful. EDIT subscribed.
Glad to hear that. Thanks for the sub.
Whole and Half Step explanation actually blew my mind. No other tutorial I’ve seen so far has mentioned that and the other teachers weren’t bad 😂… you just took it to that other level which was so nice to see
You're a legend. After so long trying to understand how the bass work, I finally understand. So glad Ive found your lesson.
Glad to hear it! Thanks Jaco.
Really usefully for me, as I have zero knowledges about bass, only play guitar for couple of month many years ago, very clear for me!
Happy to help!
WOW!!!!!!!! By far the best your teaching and delivery skills are brilliant so many videos I watched and not one could get into my hard head but you did I get it I get now thank you. Will keep watching.
Ah, that's great to hear Frank. Glad you had that "Aha" moment. All the best to you brother.
You are the RUclips teacher that has finally gotten me to understand notes, scales and chords. Your teaching style is second to none. You broke everything do to the Simplist form. Thank you so much. It finally clicked in my head. I owe you buddy 🤘
Once it clicks it's like, "There it is!", right? Glad to hear I was able to break it down for you brother.
@@stevekonbass I'm so excited to learn to play bass. I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to teach others. Once the economy improves I hope to take lessons with you.
I'll be here brother. In the meantime work with the 12 video lessons I put up so far and focus most on lessons 1, 2, and 11.
@@stevekonbass Will do. God Bless and thanks again. Stay safe.
Dude, this was the best explanatup of natural notes and all the majors and minors that I've heard. As a beginner bass player, I really appreciate it. Thank you
You're welcome Victor. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
So I have been trying to play bass for last 15 years.. I only wish someone would've shown me this when I started.. I can't believe it was this simple and effective 👏🏻 thank you so much!!
You are welcome! It's great to hear the lesson helped. Here is the playlist for all the lessons: ruclips.net/p/PLsFosTB39eVBVllLkZP_RAIjNmviv8nYe Even if you don't go in depth with them and just casually watch, there will be times when you have that Ah Ha moment and realize how easy some things are. Happy playing!
That's a great gift! Hope you enjoy it and have fun learning!
Best beginner bass lesson video… awesome instructions.
Thank you! Please share the video with your musician friends, helps to keep it going.
Hey thanks Barry. Glad to hear you liked the lesson.
I'm the same Barry... finding it straight forward rearranging the info. I will check out the resource you mentioned.
Thanks and good luck.
Just realised that I have it already but thanks anyway 👍
This is the best beginner lesson I ever watched. Thank you Steve!
You're very welcome!
Been watching bass and guitar tutorials for over a year now but this one is the one that resonates with me the most as a lyric writer. Many thanks. Really helpful.
Happy to know you found it useful.
Thanks Steve for your contribution to my musical education
You're welcome Vince. Glad to help.
Thank you so much for sharing this Steve...Greetings from Denmark!
You are welcome and "Hello" Denmark! Please share the video with your musician friends. It would help to keep the video going.
Best bass lesson I’ve watched and it transfers right to guitar as well. Your way underrated my man.
Glad to hear you dug the lesson.
I have been playing bass for about 5 years and this lesson is by very far the best I have had. Outstanding!!
It's great to hear that Marc. Thanks for taking the time to comment. Glad to hear the video was useful for you.
This is great. You’re a natural teacher. Thank you.
You're welcome!
Finally someone explains this in a way that makes sense to me.
Glad I could shed some light on it.
Best bass lesson I’ve seen to date
Thanks Marc.
Do you give private lessons?
Yes. I give them via Zoom. Info is on my website: www.stevekonbass.com
Glad the video was a help. Good luck with the piano lessons. Good piano players are hard to come by.
It helps me a lot to understand the basics
Finally, EXACTLY what I have been looking for ! Thank you thank you thank you. Liked, subscribed and shared.
Thanks Doug! Glad to hear the video was a help to you and thanks for sharing it.
Thank you man for this lesson, I can't wait to go through this video again so I can REALLY learn "the basics"
Thank you again and happy bassing!!!
I'll have to digest this one first 😀
I love the fact that i can play almost anything but would really love to know what the heck I was doing on an intellectual level!
I'll get there!
You sure will. There will be a click and then you'll have that "Aha" moment.
I am a beginner, but I'm very mathematical. I really loved the way you broke the major notes into triads and sequences. You helped me make a breakthrough! Thank you!
That's awesome Keith. Math is part of music. You should catch on quick.
This is fantastic. Steve has a very natural teaching approach, no gimmicks, just sound fundamentals. I will be basing my practice on this one lesson. Wish me luck! Thanks Steve.
Thank you. Your fingers will be moving across the fretboard in no time.
God bless you
It's nothing to get anxiety over brother. It's just music. You can do it. Have fun with it and enjoy yourself.
@@stevekonbass thank you so very much hopefully I get better I'll drop my feedback at often as I can
You will get better.
Problem is I know nothing of how to make it happen, that is until I came across this channel. He is a bloody good teacher and explains and presents it so well that I don't feel pressured and look forward to some fun times, before I get called to the great band in the sky. Fantastic. Thanks so much and I'm excited to start now as I can see a way forward. 👍👍👍
Fantastic! Enjoy your musical journey.
