George Orwell did this in the 1930s. He joined and lived with the homeless communities of Paris and London even though he had a home and was middle class. He wrote a memoir about it: Down and Out in Paris and London. At the same time it showed people the reality of being homeless and living in poverty but it was also a bit messed up because it was like an experiment for him that he could choose to end at any time and return to his cosy home while for the people he met on the streets, it was their lives

I remember back in 2006 being so happy about getting $100ish in a day here in Brooklyn. $30 per music lesson, $50 play a small show at night. $60 if i was filming a music event etc. By 2010 everything cost more but i was making the same. Then a lot of people started moving into nyc for work and the space got very completive for gig workers. Now you gotta work full time with gigs on weekends just to cover your rent. Born and raised and wish i had moved down south back when houses were cheap there to own.

Here in Denver is $17.29 and most places pay 19-27 per hour because it’s so gentrified, jobs have to pay that much for their employees to make ends meet.

I do odd jobs for my grandpa. Mowing his lawn, cutting branches, cutting them up into firewood, planting sprigs, shoveling sand into buckets, dumping and into buckets, cleaning out junk from his house, vacuuming water from his basement when it floods with rain water, etc. He pays usual 10 to $50 depending on the task. Im appreciative of what he gives me. Its not much but at least its tax tree, cant beat that. So I get to keep the little I get. Plus, theres no real schedule or time for when we do this stuff. So I don't have to work very much, which means I got lots of time for leisure. Lots of time to focus on what matters to me, like writing my stories.

The average rent in New York city is $3000/ month for your share, with room mates. $135/ a day x 30days no days off = $4050 could work if you hustled every day and didn't pay taxes and had few other needs or a girlfriend.

If your doing odd jobs, then your just earning physical money instead of a paycheck. Since thats not actual employment its tax free. Doing small services like asking somebody if they could cut their lawn for a few bucks is an example.
