Fantastic that you are keeping history alive. Thank you.
Hard work, but it's worth it!
Wow, for a second there I thought this was going to be about the plane that was used in the movie It's a Mad Mad World. Just did a search for that one, it was actually an AT-11 and it ended up being scrapped back in 1970. Too bad.
With Thurston Howell in command
I saw that plane at the old Tallmantz museum back in the 60s. It still had damage from when it flew through the billboard.
'Stop fooling around and get back there and make us some drinks! Press the button marked Booze!!'
That same thought is the reason I’m here
My dad knew Frank Tallman (he was an USAF IP in CA at the time, then did MATS, combat in Viet Nam, Pentagon, etc.). About the time that movie was being filmed, he was conducting a post major maintenance check on a C-45 (Twin Beech) and had a catastrophic failure and ended up upside down on a very expensive golf course.
Watched many an airshow at Meacham and caught a ride with Junior Burchinald of Flying Tigers Air Museum in Paris, TX. He went to jail too for renting a B-26 (Douglas) to drug runners.
This clip MUST go to the museum, helping the History of this aircraft! Great Job Bill ! ! ! ! 🙂
Many thanks! The team takes the credit!
Great job honoring Jacquelin Cochrans memory👍
Thanks!
Somehow, the narration was compelling. I cannot say why but it is. Good luck, my friend. I would love to visit your part of the world. A beautiful plane.
Maybe one day! Thanks for the kind words!
My dad, M.R. "Dick" Dickson owned Mercury Aviation at Phoenix Sky Harbor and had it for about a year around 1979-80 for resale after MGE. He had it painted (this paint job) in Wickenburg Az., I took some great aerial pictures of him flying it in formation with my brother Steve in a K35 Bonanza. So glad she hasn't been melted down for beer cans yet! Great work.
We would love to get any copies of pictures you might have of this aircraft! Thanks for watching!
Cool stuff Bill. All excellent first class work. That bird is going to be a blast to fly.
Should be a sweetie!
Thanks Bill. Great project!!
Glad you like it!
I’ve been following this restoration and was pleasantly surprised to learn about its history in this video. I remember quite well seeing 333MG at the Van Nuys Airport in the late 1960’s when I was a kid. Merv had it tied down north of Norman Larson Beechcraft just beyond the now long gone shade hangars. A very worthy restoration!
Thanks for the great history!
It's a beautiful aircraft.
Thanks!
One of the coolest things about the WASPs was, at least in single engine fighters, they would ferry anything with little more than a data card and "how to start" list. Another story was when the AAC pilots were skeptical of the B-29, command decided to have WASPs deliver the first one. It worked. "By golly, if those women can fly it..." 😂
The girls did a great job!
200.0 to the effort !
Thank you so much!
I followed this channel a few years ago when you were working on the Grumman AA-1 but lost all the links. Glad to have stumbled back on to your channel again & subscribed. Fantastic work and backstory on the Beech 18! Great to see an aircraft restoration channel where the host is actually an A&P / IA and licensed pilot.
Welcome back! We missed you!
Thanks Bill.
Thanks for watching!
Wow!! What a cool video! "The Celebrities Express".
Thanks so much!
Yes, it has a very interesting history. Neat stuff..
Glad you enjoyed it!
That airplane was at Tarrant County Junior College when I went through their A&P program. We mostly used it to learn about inspections. There was another Twin Beech they let us start, but not this one. I heard at the time that Merv once owned it, but didn’t hear all the rest.
Glory days! This may be the other Beech.... ruclips.net/video/sW9JH7-cjZM/видео.htmlsi=NL22i8Ae07JbQDhS
@@HangaRatz That’s right! Our carburetors class would take apart and “overhaul” the carburetors for this Beech, then each team would install their carb and run the engine. Bob Landry was the instructor, if you didn’t learn a LOT from that guy, it was your own fault!
I flew 18s in the Canadian arçtic back in the late 60s and 70s. Some wild times! PJ. Weston
Tough flying! And you survived!
Thanks. From Gateshead. North east England
North country. Brrrr.... Thanks for watching!
🛩
At first glance, with Hollywood Bomber, i thought must be Lockheed Electra/Hudson, pleasantly surprised
Nope, just a pretty Beech 18. I would love to see a Hudson flying though!
Ah yes, the Beech 18. . .Built at the Beechcraft plant right down the road from me here in Wichita, Kansas!
Coolio!
I believe the aircraft also appeared in ?It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" in scenes with Jim Bsckus, Mickey Rooney and Buddy Hackett.
Yup the was an ex-AT-11...
TCJC GRAD 1988 And I did R&R the Stromberg Carb and Run the thing as I recall.
Neat stuff! You need to come back and visit the old girl!
Planning on it !@@HangaRatz
Look familiar from The Man From U.N.C.L.E. in aBomb run episode.
A similar looking plane was in the movie mad mad mad world.
Yup. That was actually a modified surplus AT-11
Hands down, she's among the top 5 most beautiful G.A. aircraft ever made
DRIPPING with Class.....
Oh yeah, any chance I can be the second person to jump from it?
Rated and current for public demo jumps. Anyway, in the meantime, I will go buy a lottery ticket where I'll have much better odds 😂
Thank you for saving this American treasure for everyone.
Perhaps when the day comes for her to retire gracefully in a museum, it will be the Smithsonian.
Would be kind of cool to do some jumping with it...!
How’s the spar on that thing? Isn’t there a spar strap mod or some kind of AD?
Ah, I see an earlier comment now.
X-ray is fine and it has a spar strap installed. Thanks for watching!
Where is the spar strap?
In prime right now
WOW Bill Now we know, I Just love the Back Story if shes gonna be in "54" Deco will you be installing the appropriate "Cigarette" lighters 😂 Great Job Team!
Well, kinda, sorta... Going to replace the cigar lighters with USB ports. BUT, we're keeping the bar!
@@HangaRatz Bill ppl kid me about ALL these ashtrays & Cig. Lighters @ every seat..hey I'm trying... to keep her as she left the factory She Picked quite well as the lowest flying time prestigious "AUTO FLIGHT" Round Nose 1960 Aztec w/540s on the planet, complete with Factory Curtains lol
How about the movie Ford v Ferrari?
Dunno…
It flew through the billboard in It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World.
Not ours but another one did!
I always wondered what happened to Adam Savage.
I must admit, he seems to be 100 times smarter now than he was when he was on Mythbusters.
Just kidding of course, great video!
Ya know, for all the crap I get for looking like Adam (or does he look like me?...🤔) when is he going to stop in and help?!!! Thanks so much!
