  • What's up, people! I'm back with another Japan reaction, and this time we start our journey through their next album, Gentlemen Take Polaroids (1980). As you can see, the record starts with the title track, so let's enjoy some more David Sylvian and Japan! Cheers!

Great start to a great album.

Absolutely brilliant track and album. For an album that's over 40 years old this still sounds great. Enjoy the rest of the album and look forward to watching further Japan and Sylvian reactions. 👍🏼

@@mattsnider2667 I love your thoughts based on a song title, and it was interesting how you can see certain types of electronic equipment from two opposite sides. I didn't want to imply I am right. It's just that I remember the first time I got to see a Polaroid camera in the late 70s, it seemed quite revolutional to me. I guess in the US people were much more familar with those cameras back then. Anyways, I never really thought about the concept behind those gentlemen and their use of this particular camera, and that's why I love watching your reactions so much: You open up doors I've never thought about, even if I have known a certain song for decades.

The whole album is a true masterpiece of the highest quality, Japan really found were they wanted to be with this album, I always felt there was a strong David Bowie's 'Low' album influence in it, as well as Roxy Music.

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
Now there's a girl about town
    I'd like to know
I'd like to slip away with you
And if you said you love me
    How could I mind?
Is there another side to everything you do?
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Take in the country air
    You'll never win
    [Chorus]
    Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love, they fall in love
    Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love, they fall in love
    [Verse 2]
    Breathe life into me
    Spin me around
And I'll just sit and wonder why
It's just a foreign town with a foreign mind
Why is everything so cut and dry?
    [Pre-Chorus]
    The taste of country air
    You'll never know
    [Chorus]
    Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love, they fall in love
    Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love, they fall in love
    [Instrumental]
    [Pre-Chorus]
    Take in the country air
    I never win
    [Chorus]
    Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love, they fall in love
    Gentlemen take polaroids
They fall in love, they fall in love
Note: If any part of the lyrics are wrong or missing, please let me know.

This album version, like Ordinary World was on it's respective album, is the full version.
Most of the Japan 12" versions, unless specifically a remix, were actually their album versions.
On average they had 4 tracks per side on an album, 8 in total, but all top quality

The Bass and clarinet , and sax on other tracks all played by Mick Karn.

There sonics u were also questioning was a guitar being picked. This was guitarist Rob Dean's final album. A shame as his guitars are beautiful and layered throughout.
I believe he wasn't formally fired, he was just not invited back to do Tin Drum as the synths were essentially doing so much or they wanted a wider, cleaner sound with more space.

As a historian, did you actually (to paraphrase your handkerchief query) ask the question "why do people do things just for the sake of it?" 😂 Now we get to the good stuff. This album is superb. The title track is a great opener.

Also I love when these moments happen, because I shoot so many videos these days that I totally forget about random comments like that by the time I get to the end of a session. And then I'll see a comment like that and think, "Oh right, I did talk about handkerchiefs in that video, didn't I?" Really made me laugh just now.

I never knew the meaning, I presumed it was about a well to do man who is obsessing about a girl or model or some lady he has been taking photos of.
Polaroids were one of the first cameras that you had instant results , they also meant you didn't need to take them to a place to be developed, hense more risqué shots could be taken.
So I am not sure it alludes to that

Morrissey hated Sylvian from a young age, his angst stemming from a time when he wrote for the NME(new musical express) in the British press, his vitriol probably stemmng from the point of homoeroticism. For me, Mr M is not a nice person.

@@mattsnider2667 I recommend you listen to the track 'Music for chameleons' by Gary Numan. If you think Sylvian has an obtuse singing style, you'll be mystified by Numans style.
