What an awesome guy. The HVAC industry needs WAY more guys like this. That want to improve the industry and improve peoples health and comfort. Far too many are just sales men looking to up sale and oversize everything.
I once had my AC go out. 3 quotes: $2500, for doing the bare minimum. $5000, for including a furnace. $10K, for the same overall type of system as the $5K except with better thought to design, gear, installation. I went with the latter and afterwards considered it the best feature of the house.
Every HVAC contractor and technician needs to listen to this entire video. As a former employer, I can say that it is VERY difficult to convince an owner he can grow a business without the "box sales" mentality. That's because the typical consumer is not educated enough. Until we educate home owners, this will always be an uphill battle. But in every market, there are educated home owners that do research. Be the contractor those owners gravitate to. Let the walmart customers go to the walmart contractors. Dustin and Genry Garcia are 2 people to follow on social media.
So glad to have friends like Dustin. I learn and grow in the trade everyday because of such amazing people in my sphere. What a great conversation. Thanks Corbett and Dustin!!!
Dustin has an amazing attitude not only about HVAC but life in general. Now I just need to convince him to make a road trip out to Houston when I build!

1. Can just running the fan on be sufficient enough info to calculate pressures? 2. You should really get in touch with Destin from the channel Smarter Every Day. I'm sure he would find the science of comfort cooling to be useful if not interesting especially since he lives in Huntsville AL. If there's an episode on comfort cooling it will be good for everyone except the charlatans. 3. I'd really love more standardization in the industry rather than the "In my experience" kind of training you get on the job (not everyone can afford the college route) and this is a step in that direction. Thank both of you!
Great video. Dustin know there's inertia in the trades, but that results are what sell themselves. Meanwhile, the crew who added a 2nd floor system to our drafty, 83-yr old place left extra flex duct, thermo wire spool, and a water bottle up in our attic. And that's only what I've seen so far. I can reuse the spare thermo wire in my doorbell project.
I've been in too many attics with empty bottles, extra materials and beer cans. Some of that is the company working their people too hard and not giving them support and some of it is tradesmen that don't care enough.
Excellent video. Wish I could some how express how great this conversation is. Hope this video spreads like wildfire for you guys. Great video. Grace and Peace Slick
How would a technician like myself find a company to go to work for that has the standards that I’m trying to achieve and be part of. Lots of companies will say their all about quality and doing things the right way but far too often it’s just not that way once ya get in and start working with them and seeing how they really are.
Move to southern Ohio. 😉 You also may have to give the company a little grace, it's not easy turning a ship, so sometimes it may take a while to get to where they're heading, and may take you to help try and steer them in the right direction.
I'm gonna get a shirt made. Yes I know, No I'm not. I had a lady shout out at lunch today in the restaurant when I walked in" Oh my I thought you were Johnny Depp" which resulted in everyone else looking up and staring awkwardly for a bit.
@@gsabic That's an interesting conclusion not supported by the evidence. Dustin's company literally makes good money. It's what this video was all about: getting sales by not targeting sales. Must be magic?
It's tough. I found a decent company, decent price. Most here in Central just know how to switch out a machine. I am challenging the company redoing my hvac to look into this channel and others.
Question for you. Does a ventilation system that operates in a window exist? I have a friend with an apartment where the air quality isn't very good. Voc's are very high around 2.7 micrograms per cubic meter. I haven't seen anything so I have thought about inventing a small system that will bring in and mix fresh, filtered air with inside air and add a portable dehumidifier. This is in Florida so latent loads though...any ideas since you can't modify an apartment?
How do I find a contractor in my area that knows and practices this stuff? My home desperately needs duct balancing work, but I've never seen an HVAC contractor whip out a manometer.
I have a hrv in a MN house i bought. It hasn’t been on in years. Is the forced air furnace (or at least central hvac fan) supposed to turn on when the hrv turns on during the winter?
There are many ways to set these up, Andrew- you’d need to know what the plan was to proceed with fixing it, or you could just test everything and start with a new plan
This can be tricky at times, primarily installation. The sensor should be high & or at the fan and IMO needs to be set 60+% to reduce false activation which may increase moisture in the room from infiltration causing continuous fan operation resulting in a runaway train of it trying to remove the moisture it is creating
@Dustin Cole location definitely helps. I have mine set high and at the door. It does glitch sometimes. You gotta find that fine line of adjustments appropriate to your bathroom. Small things like a towel hanging on a wall hook or a closet door can change its effectiveness. But... it's still better than none. Especially when people refuse to turn on the fan during a bath. Bonus is it can be set to stay on after occupant exits.

I've spent a bit of time with him in the last 4 years to know that he doesn't think he's better than anybody else. He has created a successful path to help him and his business. It came from hard work and trying things that other contractors for whatever reason were unwilling to do. I think you missed his sarcasm on the 2/5 ton units, but I've seen many successful projects over the years where other contractors were throwing capacity at houses when in reality they had infiltration and either positive or negative pressure problems and a smaller unit along with air sealing and or duct sealing was the way to correct the problems. The biggest take away for me from this video was Coles offer to help anybody, and for free.
