Everyone knows how good EVH is, and Diamond Dave is the essence of cool and one of the best front men ever. Not the best vocals in existence, but perfect. What doesn't get commented on is the rhythm section. Alex is a monster, and Michael Anthony is one of the best high harmonies in the business and thumps on that bass.
    Check out Hot For Teacher.

From the David Lee Roth era:
    "And the Cradle Will Rock"
    "Panama"
    "Hot For Teacher"
    From Van Hagar:
    "Runaround"
    "Poundcake"
    "The Dream is Over"
Van Halen is pretty much a radio band. They are solid across the board but a lot of their stuff has a similar feel to it. Oh yeah, and I can't remember whether you guys have done "Eruption Live Without a Net" but if you haven't and you want to watch Eddie shred for a solid 10 minutes that should be your next watch.

Van halen songs that are more off the chain:
    Ice Cream Man
    On Fire
    Atomic Punk
    Everybody Wants Some
    Take Your Whiskey Home
    Mean Street
    Loss of Control
Unchained is one of those songs where Dave would interact with the audience during that interlude part, hey man that suit is you... .
That phrase by the way became a thing back then, also, I like the way the line runs up the back of those stockings. Dave was quite the character, dudes wanted to be him, chicks literally threw themselves at him, you should check out some of his solo vids like Just a Gigolo.
Ive seen the original lineup once, Dave solo band with Steve Vai etc, Eat Em and Smile album, once (was amazing show), Dave touring with Sammy Hagar after Hagar got booted out of VH, and Van Halen reunited once, which was also a great show, Eddies son on Bass, no Michael though. I couldnt do Van Hagar.

There's a great interview with DLR where he talks about coming up doing music and theater in school being a fantastic backgroud to be a rock star. Growing up competing for first seat in band class trained them to perform correctly on cue.
BTW, VH never really goes off script. They do tight, compact songwriting and they kill it.

Interesting tidbit about the bridge where DLR makes the comment, "take look at this. Man, that suit is you. You'll get some leg tonight for sure," and the guy comes back with, "come on, Dave, gimme a break." That was totally ad libbed and real. While the band was recording "Unchained" (the used to record bands live back in those days), one of the engineers came into the control room dressed in a full suit. As kind of a joke, Dave used the intercom to the control room and uttered those famous words, figuring they'd just redo the take. The engineer responded and it was caught on tape. And the "one break, coming up," was a perfect segue into the chorus, made up on the spot. Everyone thought it was such a brilliant chance thing that they decided to keep it. Now everyone thinks it was written that way, but not at all. It's weird how cool things like that just happen sometimes. Unfortunately, now that bands mostly record instrumental tracks separately, you don't get that interaction between vocalist and band, and that's one reason why so much of what you hear on the radio these days is boring.

First time I ever saw the opening act blow the headliner away was when VH opened for Black Sabbath just before they got big. We had never heard of them and the audience was so blown away they were called back for an encore, Never saw that before or since. Amazing show. "Hot for Teacher" may be a tune you'd like, especially since you're still of age to have hot teachers. Banger.

Van Halen has an acoustic version of "Panama" that shreds. David Lee Roth did a lot of improvising during live shows and this recording is a perfect example of his crazy and rocking personality.

Unchained was absolutely not a radio hit.
That's why Fair Warning was the worst selling VH album....because the songs were just flat out awesome rock and none of them was a surefire single hit.
Unchained is arguably their greatest song....and it never even cracked the top 10 on the mainstream rock billboard chart.
It was not overplayed, or it would have been much higher than #13 at the time.
And yes i agree they should listen to Hear About it Later and Little Guitars....plus Secrets and So this is love?

    Great song! 9.5
This is one of those songs that usually gets the majority vote amongst VH fans.
I’ve been a VH fan since 1978. If I had to pick just one of their songs that is the perfect representation of the band I would say it is “Hear About It Later” 10.0 off the album ‘Fair Warning’
*This part goes to Andy who was interested in an “off the chain” banger.
I gave this much thought and here you go:
    “Atomic Punk”
    “Light Up The Sky”
    Honorable mentioned:
    “Romeo Delight”
    “Fools”
These four tunes are less likely to be radio friendly and are bangers! 🤘🏼

This is my favorite VH album. Raw, dark, heavy. I will say I always hated the breakdown. 'You'll get some leg tonight for sure'. Just thought it took the momentum out of the song. Just my opinion. Still a good song. Dirty Movies may be my fave on this though. Now the breakdown in that, works. Great stuff guys!

So dirty yet so clean. The song "Face down in the gutter" is so god damn catchy and that riff is so raw you'll want to bite the head off an innocent rabbit so I hope you'll listen to that song.

Back in the day, Van Halen ruled the airwaves. I too love bass driven tunes that shine. A couple come to mind for reasons you may like: 1) Bass drive, 2) Stuttering, 3) Dirty lyrics. The Knack "My Sharona", and more out of weirdness and a hot female bassist The Talking Heads "Take Me to the River."
