I highly recommend Talking at Night by Claire Daverley if you want something similar to Connell & Marianne's miscommunication and realistic relationship throughout the years, and the writing gives Sally Rooney vibes as well!
Half of these books were already on my wishlist, I feel like it's time to get my hands on them and get to reading! Thatnks for this video, full of greats recs!
I didn’t really enjoy Exciting Times but I definitely think it’s worth anyone picking up if You enjoy Sally Rooney. 100% agree about Writers and Lovers, that book is an all time fave for me. I’m definitely going to pick up Luster and Friends & Dark Shapes per your suggestion.
What a great list. I’ve read all but 2 of those. (The Subtweet and the last one mentioned.) 2 I would add are A Very Nice Girl and Cleopatra and Frankenstein.
I have read and really liked Exciting Times, Luster, Writers and Lovers, A Room Called Earth I have just picked up Acts of Desperation from the library and have Fault Lines on hold because of this video. Keen to get to Fiona and Jane. Thanks!
This is a really great list. I’ve really enjoyed Exciting Times and Writers & Lovers, and have wanted to get to Tender and Fault Lines. I would really recommend Show Them a Good Time by Nicole Flattery for Rooney fans. It’s an Irish short story collection all about sort of messy woman. There’s a quote on it from Rooney, and I remember in an interview she said she wished she could write like Flattery! I feel like it’s very underrated both in that it doesn’t have that many goodreads ratings and it has a very low average rating and I’m not sure why. It has dark humor and the writing is a bit more tricksy than Rooney, but I feel like the tone of the stories and the focus on young woman/female friendships/navigating relationships makes it perfect for Rooney fans.
Do you know I have a list of 20 recommendation style videos and I'm trying to be better at getting to them :) Hopefully you'll see one every few weeks from now on.
even though i had to push through normal people & it was 3 star read for me.. i really enjoyed acts of desperation and writers and lover so much more... so i think anyone who didn't like sally rooney books very much.. may like some of these books more..
Very happy to hear you mention Writers & Lovers, one of my absolute favourite novels. I also really enjoyed Fault Lines and Exciting Times. I can recommend Expectation by Anna Hope, about the friendship between three young women in East London. Also, bizarrely, I'm thinking about the short story collection Single, Carefree, Mellow by Katherine Heiny. It's not so much about friendship as it is about young women and the affairs and relationships they are involved in. It doesn't have the greatest rating on Goodreads, which is a shame, but I thought it was fantastic. Like laugh-out-loud funny at times. I'm also thinking of Sorrow and Bliss by Meg Mason, a novel I initially struggled with and gave up on, only to then come back to it and really enjoy it. I've added most of your recommendations to my boundless TBR. I'm particularly excited to get my hands on Tender and A Room Called Earth.
You know I very nearly included Expectations, haha. I really enjoyed that novel. I haven't read Single, Carefree, Mellow or Sorrow and Bliss so I'll have to pick them up!
i ADORE tender by belinda mckeon. its one of my all time favs - i read it maybe 3 years ago and i still think about it. i know belinda mckeon is working on another novel now, which im SO excited for!!
@@MercysBookishMusings ive read her other novel, Solace, but i barely remember anything about it haha. it was well written but i dont think the story was as compelling as Tender was for me

Great list, I read Tender from your recommendation before and I thought it was great.

@@FHMS97 When I read the blurb I remember thinking it didn't sound as interesting as Tender
loved this! i think fans of rooney would also like acts of service by lillian fishman
That one is on my tbr - it sounds great :)
I dnf'd Luster but I can see how Sally Rooney readers could like it. More or less I really enjoyed all books by Rooney so far.
What abou Almost Love by Louise O'Neill?
Yes, that's a good one too. I have read it but forgot about it when making this list
This was such a good set of recommendations 🤌 (also so impressed it's shot in one take!?)
Hahaah, I think I paused between each book but thanks anyway :)
