- Proposition 187 was a California ballot measure passed in 1994 that sought to deny public services to undocumented immigrants. While the initiative was meant to keep the “immigrant threat” at bay, it mobilized non-immigrants and immigrants in Latino communities as well as their allies across the state. The political awakening of this powerful group would dramatically change the state’s electoral politics, transforming the state into a Blue and progressive state for the first time. Proposition 187 created new and enduring political faultlines across California and across the nation as well as molded the political careers of a new generation of leaders. Narrated by Danny Trejo.

I remember this when I was a kid at 8 years old, born in the US of an illegal immigrant mother at the time, and how prop 187 was the catalyst of knowing what racism was, what politics was and how I would cry and cry and scared for days because I believed that I was going to loose my mom, dad uncles cousin aunts and grandparents and being watching this march on TV and finally felling hope!!!!
I watched this for my CA Politics assignment on the topic of 187. So eye-opening!!
The movement against prop 187 raised political consciousness in the latino community. Fast forward to 2021 has the circumstances change in our communities? Did these progressive politicians do anything to stop gentrification? Homelessness? Cost of living keeps going up and its our undocumented Raza even middle class who continue to struggle just to survive in contemporary CA.
Nope they just closed down plenty of our Mexican businesses such as the Tepeyac in West Covina and ruined our kids education by closing down all the schools. I'm done with the stupid democrats who only want power at any cost!
Nope nada. Seems. Like us Latinos need to learn from the Chinese and Indians how to buy buildings. We are too stuck on the hard-work and not being selfmade.
well for starters it has turned California into a SOLID blue state, the notion of something like prop 187 today would be insane, how can anyone call that "nothing" is beyond me.
@@hectorsalinas8917 being a solid blue states comes with many consequences. Just like a solid red state.
@@DonJulio510 vague statement, what's not vague is that Prop 187 happen because it wasn't.
Excellent work, love these stories about our history
California got screwed.
Belmont high school walkouts !!
I agree that something needs to be done at the border and that we cannot keep allowing anyone to just walk in. But discriminating anyone that looks like they can be here illegally and mistreating them here is wrong. If they are here already let them be but if they are committing crimes they should be deported.
Prop 187 was not discriminatory. It barred non citizens from using welfare and Medi-Cal. Funny enough, even after Prop 187 was quashed Social Services kept the rule that non citizens were not eligible for welfare, food stamps or medi-cal, but workers were allowing non citizens to use the services illegally. Gov Newsom recently removed the rule to allow non citizens access to Medi-Cal.
Taxpayers will foot the bill of non citizens getting free Medi-Cal
1:24:27 then they pepper sprayed them all, disgusting display by that protester
It is more complicated than it is presented here. The public education and its curriculum is what is bad, not the mother coming to have her child born in the US; she is honestly, selfishly, striving for a life that is better for especially her child. The law cannot, nor should have people be put under suspicion. The immigration laws are very, very convoluted, and are not well to process status through them. The aspect in 187 that puts immigrant children away from public schools is especially good as the schools are running under an idea of socialization and pushing accommodation and idealization instead of showing facts. They would be better off in private schools that might have better curriculum, and do have much lower cost. There are more than enough private sources who are willing and want to make sure that children have an education. For the government to force some taxpayers to pay for the children of others is wrong. Even though I agreed with this in the law, I did not vote for it as it would put people under suspicion.
Latin Americans should be able to vote but how American can one be if they aren't a citizen.
@Fred Lenway Im not a latino. good thoughts though.
