This series is so awesome and informative. As a new L.A. citizen. I wanna learn as much as possible. Thanks for this wonderful series!!! Please keep going.
my dad and his family is all from LA, South Central, Huntington Park, Watts, etc. When he showed me this series on tv a couple weeks ago, he couldn't stop talking during every segment because he grew up with all of these great attractions, sights, etc. Welcome to LA, I hope you enjoy it here with us. :)
wow. Born in SanDiego, raised in Ventura County, I grew up in the 1970s. I had never even heard of the Tongva people until randomly finding this video. I was looking at "history" topic on youtube. Very glad to learn more about things I never knew. I hope that more and more people will share these stories and share the facts about people who lived in California so long ago before white people wandered into the lands. It does no good to keep repeating false histories. Its not romantic.
Thanks for your comments. My family goes back through the "Chumas-Tong-va " people. My great grandparents were of Native American people and of the Japanese people. I've tracked it back to pre-1400. We're learned to ASSIMILATE. We're not EXTINCT!!!
As a Filipino-american who grew up closely with working class Chicanos/Mexicans, this history is important. In Filipino culture even though we have Spanish surnames we're just about 95-98% full blooded indigenous (the names were assigned to us, we're not as mixed as most people think) despite that, our culture and mentality is very much centered around the Meztiso identity. The racial caste system, and how this programming taught it, is very impactful.
Great series. I moved to West LA from NYC in 1958. It was wonderful. In 1975 after graduating university, I moved to Santa Cruz. It was wonderful. Now I live in New Zealand and Its wonderful. Alot like Southern Cal was in the late 50's.
Haha, it’s funny that Americans think from East to West. As a Mexican descendant, even just on my European side I have ancestors in the modern Western US in the 1500’s, before English ever appeared here. By the 1530’s, Mexico City already had a university, printing press, vineyards, cathedrals, etc by the time the pilgrims even thought about building their ships. Sadly, if you search up “first university in North America”, you’ll still get “Harvard”.
I often say that on the east coast, the mother country was England through the pilgrams and on the west coast, our mother country is MEXÍCO through los pobladores. ( yes, they carried the “Spanish” flag but the majority of supplies and personage came from Mexico. por ejemplo; only one of the 44 pobladores of Los Ángeles was actually from Spain and only one other was criollo)
I somewhat agree, because most of the families were from New Spain (Mexico), but it was our Spanish ancestors that did the leg work, so I would say SPAIN is the father country and Mexico is the mother country of the West.
PBS SoCal we need more videos , for example San Fernando Mission , Los Encinos , The Leonis Adobe , the history of The Dominguez Family & The Avila that create LA like The Sepulvedad Family . I can wait for you channel to show them too .
Include your 2-3 key takeaways (what you learned) from the Lost LA: Borderlands video. Wrong! The Spanish Monarchy did not judge or burn alive woman who were accused of being witches. However, the Hispanic Monarchy constitutes "an absolutely unique case in all of Europe" because in the face of the "prevailing witchcraft madness" the Council of the Supreme and General Inquisition became a "bastion of wisdom, prudence and rationality" and did not allow " that a single witch was burned "in the nine" complicities of witches "in which he intervened between 1526 and 1596. [26] According to Joseph Pérez. As a matter a fact there was a Spanish Inquisition in México, and throughout the American continent. Though the natives weren’t prosecuted nor killed, however it only applied to certain mestizos. I’m not saying the Spanish monarchy wasn’t evil but they had less casualties compared to the British and Portuguese empire. FYI Pío Pico’s family was of Spanish decent. The only thing I hear about this documentary is about separatism and how the natives class against the Spanish, yes it was so true though at the end they had a future and played a big role throughout the Spanish and Mexican empire. Yes México did have its empire though it lasted for about a year or two.
These producers should make a documentary about the many whites who came to old California and married Mexican women, thereby qualifying them to legally purchase land from the local Californios. The list includes people like Wilson, the grandfather of General Patton. Another interesting story is about “Don Enrique” Dalton, an English businessman who purchased land that once stretched from Pasadena to Claremont. He ended up losing all of his land, trying to appeal the leaders in Washington to stop the land grabbing Americans from squatting all over his land, as well as the railroads taking the rest of it, following the Civil War. Pico wasn’t alone in this story. And Henry Dalton was white!
This was pretty cool, a bit anti white but whatever. I'm from Pico Rivera, born and raised. We would go to Pio Picos mansion off Whittier Blvd all the time. I love my hometown!
It’s funny how this show completely glosses over the fact that Mexicans had a functional metropolis here in Mexican California. With a beautiful culture. Many of the current street names in downtown are original to those times. This so called peace shines a completely negative light on that era!
Please, enough with the conspiracy that you anti-political correctness nuts insist is real. You anti-PC people are the ones guilty of attempted thought-control.

The Spanish Empire's population was half-again as large as the Aztec Empire (9m v 6m) and only the Incan Empire to the far south was larger at 12m. Hardly small by any standard; beyond that, it commanded a quarter of the world's wealth at the time.

Right and Mexicans always sayin that California was once Mexico but always leave out the fact that it was Native American Land way before Spain came along wtf
From an indigenous or a pre-Columbian context (Chumash, Hupa, Miwok, and Serrano) yes. But from a colonial or an imperialistic perspective (Spain, Mexico, and the United States of America), no.

Great narrative for anglosaxonism exaltation. However, if you really want to know the truth or the actual history about native americans, spanish and mexicans living in the area go check spanish, mexican or native american archives instead. You will probably find everything for good or bad, because is not in our culture to burn our shames. I am sure we´ll see how real history comes up within this century. Everyone needs it. There is too much unnecessary hate.
FYI - California & Los Angeles state & county archives are filled with Spanish & Mexican documents. Who do you think ran the state & local governments before 1849? Those records didn't just disappear.
I find it interesting that a lot of these "natives" have Spanish, or should I say, Mexican last names. Its almost like theses "natives" forgot how the Aztecs didn't exactly care for the "natives" of California and also warred with them constantly. And yet the "natives" never mention the Clovis culture of White people that their ancestors wiped out thousands of years ago. Sort of like the Polynesian Hawaiians, they have blinders on that don't allow them to see the greater picture. The anger blinds them and will lead them to be a blip in history, no matter how many latino catholics you brainwash on day trips.
The Spaniards and their cousins, the Portuguese, mixed with the Indians since day one. The Anglosaxons didn´t since they are much more racist and typically looked very different than the indians, more Scandiniavian whereas Spaniards look more like Turks, Greeks, Arabs, etc.
