  • Los Angeles has long been the place where you can imagine something - any time period, any locale, ordinary or exotic, real or fantasy - and build it. It’s a tradition that dates to the 1910s and 1920s, when early filmmakers built elaborately themed outdoor sets that often remained standing for months or years, inviting visitors. It found its fullest expression in nearby Anaheim, where Walt Disney’s Imagineers created the intricately themed, immersive experience that is Disneyland.

In 1968 mom and dad took me to Universal for the studio tour. I had just turned 12. We saw the cowboy stunt men shootout, the soundstage for the Shirley MacLaine musical “Sweet Charity” and Lana Turner’s dressing room. The most memorable event for me: I got my picture taken with Al “Grandpa Munster” Lewis!

It has changed for the worse, even since I was a kid in the eighties. I traveled there thoughtout my youth to visit family and there were areas to avoid, even back then. You have to be very rich to live in Southern California, or you can't live there. I watch silent films that shot on location in Los Angeles. It was mostly undeveloped lots. The ranches and orange groves are gone. All of the beauty that attracted people to move to Los Angeles is gone. No wonder people are scrambling to leave. I live in North Carolina, and the people from California who move here say how much they love it here, they can buy a mansion for what a flat would cost to buy.

Walt designed Disneyland's entry as an idealized fantasy of "the good old days" in the USA, fifty years earlier. At the time of the opening, there would've been visitors who had actually lived during that period. Moving up to today, this would be comparable to creating a version of the 1970s, which were 50 years ago now. That's a bizarre contrast to consider.

I can recall the 1964 Words Fair in New York. I was 8 years old. It is one of many happy memories that will forever be etched in my mind. I hope that in the hereafter, I wind up there again so I can ride the Ford car attraction again and again. Along with the large Ferris wheel tire. These were my favorite attractions of all time.

Lots of cool history in these videos. Thanks for sharing. I grew up in Hollywood and in the early-mid 70's I used to go to Magic Mountain and Universal Studios for $5. I didn't even go to Disneyland until I was 10 or so and pretty sure it was more than $5. Now it is cheaper to own Disneyland stock than to go there.

I'd like to correct something said in this: Walt Disney was a visionary, to be sure, however, it was his brother, Roy, who was the savvy businessman.
In addition to what hebneh below stated and in response to the general theme of moviemaking in this video.......as you enter Disneyland and pass under the left (specifically) archway under the train, it is meant to resemble the opening scene of a film, as your vision of Main Street USA widens.

The reproduction of the Intolerance Set in the Hollywood Highland Center is gone forever. The Irony in that is that they are directly across from the place in which D.W.Griffiths memorial was held when he passed away forgotten and penniless....

Here's what u don't know. Anaheim was all orange, walnuts, grapes almonds orchards. Movies were moved to Ca because of the perfect weather.
Hollywood was Hollywood Land nothing to do with the movies.
Like the OutPost, a housing area.
Water rights killed over 600 people in the late 20's a damn broke killing everyone in its path. Where Magic Mountain is now. Sad.😦🙏

It's frustrating to see these experts who only know their subject by education where as we who grew up amongst the subject and could write a book on what we saw and experienced personally in L.A. tell ourselves, if they only knew what they missed.

I know we cannot turn back time, but perhaps, Disney, your current ailment stems from just wishing for too much, all the time. Nothing can grow exponentially forever: even universes die. Make less, better. We could all use a breather.

There's no need! It's images and words that matter, not piiiinging and doooonging all the way through.

This host is so annoying, he's no Huell Howser or Ralph Story, and the content is so banal. A great effort as a high school video project though. Caruso is no Walt Disney...Disney sought to invite people in, Caruso designs to exclude. He's done that quite well in Palisades Village.
