  • Jeff Ostroff gives you a new update on the investigation of the OceanGate Titan submersible implosion on June 18th, 2023, which captivated the world. This week reports surfaced that the Royal Canadian Air Force released official audio of the banging sounds detected during the search and recovery of the Oceangate Titan sub. The sound file will be shown in the BBC Channel 5 Titan sub documentary titled The Titan Sub Disaster: Minute by Minute.
You will see a trailer for this new BBC documentary that has this authentic audio. You will hear this audio and analyze whether this could be the Titan Sub crew banging on the hull of the submersible to get the attention of the rescuers. It is possible the Titan crew was trying to signal help from the rescuers.

There is an entire decaying ship down there slowly falling apart. Pretty good source of rhythmic metallic banging. Could be sea life too. There was also a whole bunch of vessels around in the area with lots of bangy equipment on board. By the time the recording equipment was in place the sub was already crushed to pieces. Otherwise it wouldn't have been a debris field, it would have been a debris pile.

The US Navy said they heard sounds consistent with an implosion coming from that general region at around the time they lost communications. That coupled with the debris found in the state it was and where it was is consistent with an implosion at depth, where it would was expected to have been when commms were lost and the implosion sound was heard. That’s strong evidence the implosion occurred around the time comms were lost, but we’ll ultimately have to wait until the NTSB, US Marine Board, and Canadian agencies issues their formal report. I’d wager that this audio being released now in a commercial deal means they ruled it out as being related to the submersible.

Also according to previous passengers of the Titan... it constantly made loud snapping sounds when it was below 900 feet.. Stockton first passenger and fellow submariner... said it was the carbon fiber filament snapping under the pressure and warned stockton that his sub was unfit for service. Stockton meanwhile claimed it was the sub flexing under the strain. So I can imagine the frequency of loud sounds would have be constant and increasing in frequency the deeper they went.

It’s very effective if you know what you’re doing, and this indicates to me that the documentary will play both the raw audio as well as their best attempt to isolate the banging sound from the rest of the noise. This is a great thing, and exactly what I’d want them doing for the doc.

First, the wave file shown shows five not four sound impulses -- not clear why they didn't play the first of five. Second, the recording may have been made by the SOSUS array, which can triangulate location because there is more than one hydrophone. Also, Sonobooies can be dropped by aircraft, but if there is a thermal layer, as there usually is, they might not be able to detect the sound through the layer. Lastly, the four sound impulses we heard don't appear to be the actual implosion as the final impulse should have been more smeared out, I would think. The estimated time for the implosion was 20ms, but those four sounds were more like 400ms or more between them. Perhaps the program will have audio that wasn't played here, so we'll see.

Carbon fiber hull, acrylic window or flexing of joins between titanium and carbon fiber.
Those were the 3 points of failure and it was a race to see which would fail first as all three would have failed with time.
I go with the carbon fiber hull.
Why? Stockton got the carbon fiber cheap because it had expired.
Titans designed actually called for 10 inch carbon fiber hull. But Stockton trimmed it down to 5 inches.
Strong UV light on the surface would have caused degradation. And the Titan was not well cared for towards the end.
When stockton made the carbon fiber hull, he just dumped some expoxy at atmospheric pressure. That mean when the expoxy starts to cure, it would heat up and outgas . So you get little bubbles through out the structure. Given the great depth the titan went too, high pressure water was forced into these spaces, widening them.

I am calling BS to the banging noise because of the human response to imminent danger. In my humble opinion a person would not bang some random rhythmic message every 30 minutes. They would either bang Morse Code or a continuous, random, desperate banging or hammering until they were tired and would do it again as soon as they could.
It would also be interesting to know who in the sub knew Morse Code. Many people know what SOS is without being proficient in code. I would also take odds that Stockton Rush was proficient with code.
I don't understand why people always think there is some hidden conspiracy story in every incident even if it makes no sense. The sounds were described in the first days of the accident, as well as the implosion sound. The implosion came first and that is it. WTF, Over? Maybe it is some sort of British click-bait?

There is no feasible way someone banging on the sub wall would be loud enough to be picked up. Sound travels well in water, but there's no way.
It sounded like something buckling and creaking before its crushed. Or if something in the plane was flapping around and hitting something else, it would usually make a pattern depending on what it is.
But it wouldn't make any sense that it happens more often. No idea but its not physically possible they could hit the wall loud enough to to more than a small area around it.
I am still fully of the opinion it imploded at 9:45. And yeah, the people in there were immediately turned to chum, it would have been spread and cleaned by critters before anyone got there.
Or it was just something like in the Santa Clause 2 when the plane flew over the north pole.

My question is, which NOBODY seems to be answering or addressing, is HOW FAR AWAY could the sound they are listening to be coming from? Sure they can hear tapping, banging, and explosive sounds but with what accuracy are they able to determine not only what direction the sound came from but from what distance? I would imagine if they had multiple listening devices that they could use triangulation to hone in on a potential area but perhaps with limited accuracy. Sound can travel great distance underwater so how do they know if they are listening to sounds within a few miles or within hundreds of miles?

Once again you break down all of the questions that have popped up, at least in my head. From questioning why the Canadian Air Force is involved in releasing this information, and why they shared just 1 news sources, especially for the BBC, etc. As for the sound, it’s difficult to say if it’s connected or not if there is no time mentioned to correlate the events that unfolded.
And the best way I can think of describing what happened to the human remains is as one person who works for recovering the 9/11 victims described what they are working with, forgive me if I mess this up. When finding the remains is like trying to find the pieces when the whole thing is as if it was put in a blender. Chances are as grotesque as this metaphor is, it is the most accurate description of that event and it’s likely the best way to describe this event too.

It would be very interesting to test as analogy the difference in sonogram of an impact on a mass of titanium as end cap vs composite cylinder as well as thick layer of Acrylic. The sonogram would be identifiable. Also, one would assume there would be a decipherable means to find human vocalization. The sound of human voices would be transmitted via the hard shell composite as well as acrylic and titanium. There most likely would need to be vastly greater amounts of viscoieleastic sound deading needed to eliminate all sound transference. I have not seen anywhere that the titanium end caps were covered with the Rubber that the composite shell was covered with.

So if we use common sense, logical thinking and some of our iq, we know that during the last minutes of the Titan sub, you can read in the manuscript (the conversation between the sub and the support ship), basically their last words were that they heard noises in the back up the sub, shortly after that all communications stopped and the military heard a sound that sounded like an implosion underwater at that time, right where the titan sub was.
So there basically 0% chance that they survived for 2 days after they lost communication with the support ship and after the military heard the implosion, and then all of a sudden instead imploded 2 days later, even though there are no sounds that support an implosion two days later anyway, and based on this new sound you would think that they would knock SOS instead of some random knocking if it was them banging for help, and that sound is not what an implosion sounds like, it could have been some smaller bang first but the last one should have been very distinct from the other ones.

The Titan remains were offloaded in Middletown Rhode Island last year.
    41°31'45.8"N 71°18'47.0"W
They were most likely stored inside one of the warehouses inside the Naval Station Newport Rhode Island.
I've been to that place a few times when I was a delivery driver; it is a super secure naval base.
Armed humvees patrolling 24/7, guard dogs and totally fenced-in with cameras.
As soon as any local hears 'Coast Guard investigations' they immediately think 'Naval Station Newport Rhode Island'
The Navy and the Coast Guard share a command center there.
Plus, they already test and repair navy mini subs there. So they have workers with mini-sub experience that work there daily.
That place you keep showing in your videos; it's like a museum or something and is 30 miles away; anyone can walk up to the door or look inside through the windows; it has no security and it has 2 small offices with 3 people working in them.

My _guess_ is that the Navy sonar has some ability to resolve direction, because it has multiple sensors well spaced out, and because that's what you'd need it to do to tell you where any invaders are. _If_ that's the case, they should have a high degree of confidence the loud explosion came from the vicinity of the wreck. I've got no idea how you'd record sounds in the water from an aeroplane, but perhaps they drop a floating pod with hydrophones into the water and it radios sounds back. That may be less directional, as the sensors would be closely spaced and sound travels faster in water, making it harder to resolve directions from phase differences.
If one accepts the Navy's report as being more reliable, the subsequent sounds must have another source.
When a cable bangs against something, that triggers a wave which travels the length of the cable to its support, bounces back, and may cause a temporary separation and second impact at the contact point. That's one non-human way a double bang could be generated. Sometimes when humans use hammers they do double-taps, pausing between them to check progress.
If one wanted to ramp up publicity for a documentary, a good way would be to "talk up" the possible significance of these sound recordings, even if one realised they are likely of no significance.

Hi Jeff and thank you for your outstanding content. I have been following you since I discovered your quality coverage of Titan tragedy.
I do have a proposal or maybe it's rather a question. So, you are a real content creator with significant amount of subscribers, and who's audience surely exceeds millions in some fixed time frame, right? So could you consider contacting the press office / PR people of the committee conducting the investigation (or the Canadian AF, Canadian CG, or the US equivalent, incl. Navy) and either ask exclusive from them or if not possible public and general press release to be released on the matter at least? Even if they tell you they dont have anything to tell at the moment, that's still news, right? They might, if nothing else, provide you with expected time line when they assume they are finished? Also, what is indeed interesting is your accurate observation on the subject of limited release of the sound recording. This kind of material should be made available for the public in general. It would be more than justified inquiry to figure out why the tape was published only in so limited manner? They do need to have an excuse, I would think? Maybe it is the fact that this recodring actually has nothing to do with the investigation, that they have been able to single that much out? I mean, I am pretty sure officials would not turn down your QSO because taking care of public relations is part of their official, mandatory even duties. Back in the day, when print media was still something, I was in charge of the leading trade periodical of my own field of specialty in my own region and we had an audience of mere thousands - say two to three- and officials always responded in timely manner and worked with us to the expected levels when we contacted them.
