You can also play a trumpet using a sax mouthpiece. This is basically all we do in band.
How?!
Quack
That’s what Eddie Harris, the great saxophonist, of Freedom Jazz Dance fame did. He played it on Tryna Make It Real Compared To What, with Les McCann, on a live recording.
Quack that’s not what our band does

Thanx Bruce
@@arrjee9474 ...I wasn't entirely awake from the last reply, which is now deleted. I apologize for that. SWISS MOVEMENT was released in mono/promo (Atlantic 1537) and stereo (Atlantic SD 1537) on November 3rd, 1969. I was sixteen years old, when I bought this classic LP on Veteran's Day that same year, which was recorded "live" on location at the Montreux Jazz Festival in Montreux, Switzerland on June 21st, 1969. My mother and stepfather also bought SWISS MOVEMENT the day before Thanksgiving Day the same year. By the spring of 1970, the highlight selection, a composition by the late and legendary Gene McDaniels entitled "Compared to What?" had received tremendous airplay on the jazz, pop and rhythm and blues stations in every major city throughout the country. Les McCann's swearing also was "beeped" out on "Compared to What?" which was expectedly obvious over the airwaves. PERSONNEL: Eddie Harris, tenor; Benny Bailey, trumpet; Donald Dean, drums; Leroy Vinnegar, bass; Les McCann, piano and vocal (on "Compared to What?" only). Produced by Neshui Ertegun and Bob Emmer. I still have my first copy today in near mint plus (NM+) condition. In recent years, I bought the CD version of SWISS MOVEMENT.
Wtf it sounds like a trumpet with a head cold 😂
Abby Goodman exactly what I was thinking
When everyone started soloing together I died of laughter
HEYYYYYYYYYYY..... ITS SAXOLOGIC
HEYYYYY
Me too...when recording the last solo I don't know how I kept it together
The goats here oh shoot
Play the lick with it
It has this weird charm to it. Can't really put my finger on it.
The trumpet mouthpiece (and the imperfect seal) is allowing you to form a continuous range of vowel sounds. Like a plunger mute but happening at the other end of the horn. I think the charm is this "talkative", "mumbly" quality. How about calling it the Scataphone?
AceTheMusicMan it’s brassy but sounds fresh
Because the saxophone is an unholy abomination, any alteration is a pleasing one.
AceTheMusicMan Yeah it reminds me of a really nice sounding kazoo lol
@@Tmanaz480 100% exactly
Bro wtf this is both wonderfully silly and really hip lol
Hahaha, thanks
a hip that needs to be replaced
I'm a sax player and I will definitely guve it a shot. I was laughing the whole time. My teacher always said you have to be crazy to play a sax and this is crazy as hell!! I love it!
God bless you man
This hybrid sounds strangely exactly how it’s supposed to, yet like nothing I expected. I can hear the trumpet and the sax at the same time.
Ask any middle school band director-the answer is yes
I am a middle school band director, so I kind of already knew the answer ;)
ikr? Leave a group of middle schoolers to their own devices and they'll exhaust all of the franken-horn possibilities in about a days time.
Cram
I remember in middles school band we got 12 trumpet's worth of slides and put them all on one trumpet. It looked like some insane Dr. Seuss contraption and it played insanely low and only fundamental tones like a bugle. So much fun lol.
@@Peter-ff1tp I'm confused. I got out of brass in general after middle school, is trumpets having slides an uncommon thing? I don't think I've ever seen one without them. How else do you tune it or intonate notes with the third valve? Also we rented most of them from a nearby music store and trumpets were by far the majority instrument.
Doctor:”Don’t worry, Traxapet can’t hurt you.”
Traxapet:
DerxkoPlayz trumpohone sounds better🤷🏻♀️
Saxophone is after Adolphe Sax, the inventor, it's better merged as a Saxpet. I wonder what would happen using a resonant tube like a flute
Don't forget Dave if you keep on playing that way and become good at it the reeds, sax mouthpiece and ligature company gonna tear their hair out with anger and frustation.
🤣🤣🤣
@@hansroemerszoonvanderbrikk7626 Tell that to the Tubax.

How original, figures that the RUclips algorithm has nothing interesting to say.
it works surprisingly well with a French horn mouthpiece
Hmmmmm I gotta try that
Dave Pollack you should try and get a jazzophone as well it’s like a trumpet saxophone but it’s its own instrument
Now i wonder if this is possible with a tenor (any other brass mouthpiece)
Dude I’m trying this
@@ooryl36It's possible. You just gotta have pretty small mouthpieces ie a tenor trombone mouthpiece won't work well on a tenor sax but an alto horn or trumpet mouthpiece will work fine
Dang Dave, you’re blowing up! This year must be a good year for us youtube saxophonists!
Hahah, it’s going pretty good
Dave Pollack love u man getting a lesson from u once this youtube check comes in
What else would you like to see my try for this series? Let me know!!
Can you try a flute head joint?
On an alto?
A trombone mouthpiece on a tenor or bari
Could you see if you could find an Irish Whistle mouthpiece that would fit on the neck? Or a recorder mouthpiece, on both alto and soprano if you can, although it might be easier to find a mouthpiece that fits a soprano neck. I am curious to how that would sound, if it would make any sound at all.
😂😂😂😂
this is the ultimate jazz machine
すげえ!トランペットとサックスの間みたいな音や!
あぷりこっと太郎 Yes
Hmmmm flute mouth piece. I put a saxophone mouthpiece on my flute. Flutaphone
Jacon0206
...I’m honestly trying to figure out how that’d work...since...flutes are held and blown horizontal vs vertical. (But, you might be able to stick an alto or tenor recorder’s head on it and get the same pun lol)
❤️❤️❤️
Jacon0206 I play both of those and imma try this
that will fit over a flute??
Michael Shelley I’m pretty sure if you put the neck of the sax into the body joint of the flute it’ll work
Wow man!!😂 You even sound killin on a alto sax/trumpet!👍
Hahaha, thanks!
No, thank you for sharing your talent on whatever instrument it may be!
Lucas Netto it’s a trumpaphone
@@Enderwolf1245 what's a trumpet with a sax mouthpiece...
ALTO TRUMPAPHONE
Bari sax with a trombone mouthpiece. I call it the bari trombophone
Gene Pelletier That actually closely resembles a very old instrument called an ophicleide, search it up. Really interesting old instrument
What about the baribone
Me and my band friends hooked a alto mouthpiece to a trombone. The results were epic
MyRackley so what? It can still be old, even if there are older instruments
When you threw that mouthpiece a piece of my soul left me
Trumpet mouthpiece sounds better than some Meyer, don't worry about it
I love how you make this like the old videos- you get straight to the point and don’t do the whole expierence of buying the product and other clickbait and wait 20 minutes to see you blow into it and the video ends
THANK YOU!!!
You're welcome!!
おすすめにでてきました!発想が神!投げた時の音がよかったですw
Glad you liked it!
Try out bari sax with tuba mouthpiece
That wouldn't sound good at all. Euphonium mouthpieces work much better with bari saxes
That's an ophicleide ahahah
"That wouldn't sound good at all." ...did you watch my video? It sounded horrible, but that's the fun of it!
@@DavePollack I'm just saying that you need a mouthpiece from higher up in the brass family ie. a trumpet (as high as a soprano sax) mouthpiece for an alto sax and for a bari you would need an euphonium mouthpiece (same pitch as tenor sax). It still sounds bad but tuba mouthpiece on a baritone would be damn near unplayable.
The series is called "will it play", it's just a fun experiment and it would be funny to see if Dave could actually play something with that setup
Not gonna lie, this sounds way better than I thought.

Basically what school band sounds like.
That is without a doubt the best thing I've ever seen on RUclips. I was laughing so hard I was crying.
I actually spit out my coffee lmao
when it got the triple
Hahah! Me too
My friend played a French horn with a baritone saxophone mouthpiece (or one of the saxes) and it sounded pretty crazy, you should try it
I’ve found it. This is the soundtrack for my life
Amazing
You made that sound much better than it should. (I play both trumpet and sax, but can't sound close to passable with that combo.) Well done!
Thanks so much!
I remember doing thus in my high school marching band
This is actually really similar in design to an ophicleide, which is a keyed brass instrument from the early 19th century. Both saxophone and ophicleide are conical bore, keyed, and share a similar shape, with the exception that the ophicleideʻs bell returns to the top of the instrument to make a large U like a tuba. Very cool!
最近ふとサックスって実質金属で出来てるし金管のマッピつけても吹けんじゃね?とか思ってたところにオススメで出てきたw

Lmao I used to do this shit back in high school. I'm determined to find a way to make it work like you did. I really like soprano mouthpiece on trumpet even more!
Hahah! I’m going to be doing a bunch of different stuff in this series...let me know if you want to collab for one!
Ophicleide is basically something like a saxo with a brass mouthpiece. They sound similar to tubas, and they are awesome!
Woooo !!! Great ! 🤗🤗 the tone and also the trumpet style phrasing
This sounds like if the otamatone was a brass instrument
OMG it does 😆
LMAO it does though
@@marky7110 holy shit I completely forgot about this video
What a fantastic sound when all three played together! Some solos were a stretch, but man when played together it is a great sound. Thanks for sharing.
Hahah thanks!
Thank you for this Dave. It gave me me the best laugh I’ve had all week! And great playing too!
Thanks! Everyone needs a good laugh
this is surprisingly good
Well, that's how the sax was invented. The other way round, anyway. A clarinet MP on a trumpet led to what we have th today. Bravo Mr Sax.
Haha the two standoffs during the solos are perfect.
I paid them extra
Can confirm this has worked for me
Ngl it sounds like the hybrid of trumpet and saxophone and in blends extremely well. It still got the buzziness of a trumpet but the tonality of a saxophone

This is truly a piece of art
I agree
Sounds good for me. I suggest "the traxophone" as a name, since "alto" is a term for a vocal range (and sometimes the violas are called like this too).
I always thought it should be called the traxophone
This sounds so soothing! I love it
You've effectively made a keyed bugle.
Oh damn...I commented before I listened: Excellent!!
発想が面白いです!!音の感じも聞いたことの無い新感覚な音ですね!
I fall asleep with auto play on and wake up to this
I won’t complain
I was looking for this. Thank you. That's basically an alto ophicleide!
how bout the other way around? sax mouthpiece on a trumpet. please haha
imlacsina Eddie Harris did that well long ago on recordings.
I’ve tried that, it won’t
Derpy Sheep if you have the control of the overtone series on tenor like Eddie Harris it indeed works. I saw him doing it . I also heard d him play the ballad “ people”. Never playing a note below G above the horn. Perfectly in tune and phrased beautifully. If you can’t play your overtone exercises with many permutations you won’t be able to do it. Practice playing scales and melodies on the 3rd and 4th harmonic of the bottom 5 or 6 notes on your saxophone..
Well for the heck of it, I tried an alto mouthpiece and the notes are way lower, like baritone range. I guess that's because of the size of the mouthpiece bore vs a trumpet one that's very narrow. Im thinking if using a soprano mouthpiece would work, since it's a bit narrower and smaller.
@zangsax So because one person did it years ago means we should never try it again? I mean I'm going to do whatever anyway, but I'm just curious about your thought process
Dave! I appreciate your COOLNESS!
Haha, thanks!
Yeah, the trumpophone! (No presidential pun intended! Crazy!)

Yes
My sentiments exactly! LOL
WOW - this reminds me of my mentor and teacher, the great Eddie Harris who invented a Reed Trumpet mouthpiece and was the inspiration for Miles Davis' Bitches Brew - He also recorded playing Oleo with a trombone mouthpiece on the tenor sax - I love the true innovators
You've rediscovered the ophicleide... Sort of
now it's Altocleide
You can have quite an ophicleide with a horn mouthpiece on a bassoon, it works kinda well!
Look up the keyed bugle.
Not only did you play very well, but also your video work is amazing... welldone.
Thank you!
Come oooon Maaan. I'm already trying to play Miles Davis parts on tenor and now you go and throw a trumpet mouthpiece on the sax. Now I can't get this out of my head. Lol. Not bad. I'll stick to the sax mp for now. Thanks for the video.
It's such a weird mellow sound I love it
Once some kids put a clarinet mouthpiece inside of a trumpet and it sounded exactly like a clarinet...
I just tried that and it sounds like I'm playing a clarinet note with the octave key.
@@Ilnur-v6z interesting
Pretty fun bro. Odd sound but cool music. Thanks for giving folks a reason to smile today.
Glad I could help!
Take pieces of pvc pipe and tape it an alto where the neck would go. Then stick the mouthpiece on the end
YES!!
genius
Some instruments should never be combined (for example, the bassoon and the trombone), but this works remarkably well.
Just what I was looking for.
i played my recorder with my trombone mouthpiece, it kinda worked
Vid pleasa
Just tried this, kind of-ish
I can’t decide which of the three of you plays better
The oldest one
The saxumpet, or TRUMPaphone. Those woulda been my suggestions. I kinda liked it! Good job!
Did stuff like this alllllll the time in high school!! It’s fun putting the flute head on it. It’s kinda hard to play but sounds cool!
This sounds alright. Has it's own charm. Why don't more people do this? Is it out of tune with other instruments or something?
This is absolutely ridiculous! I love it. I mean it sounds horrible, but it sounded better than I thought it would.
Hahah yup!
A trumpet sax, cool. It works. What does the low end of this trumpet sax sounds like. As well as altissimo 3rd oct 4th oct
Try it and find out! Could be fun
MAN, THIS IS AWESOME. DOPEST THING I'VE EVER HEARD. YOU ARE AWESOME. OFFICIALLY, THIS IS ON MY ACHIEVEMENTS LIST.

C'est la première fois que je vois ça, excellente idée, bravo.
Interesting! Nice improv on This I Dig of You. Perhaps a thin layer of cork around the shank might lend more control. The Tralto!
