      I think that the lower pitches would be harder to play given the mouthpiece is the same size, so as a result it just puts the harmonics a lot closer together in the played range, kinda like a horn but not in tune :P

      I was surprised too, but the hose would need to be as long as the trumpet's tubing just to lower the pitch by an octave. At a guess, it's maybe doing half that.
      And Colton's right, the mouthpiece makes a huge difference.
      To me the biggest difference is the much lower Q factor, meaning that the lips have way more pitch range available.

      The sound was interesting. I have no idea what happens with French horn though. Probably something similar.

    Nice Dave. You might get better results if you remove the tuning slide and connect a length of hose in it's place. The longer the hose, the lower the pitch so you might be able to turn your trumpet into a valved trombone or even a tuba!

    Tape a sax mouthpiece onto trumpet, I did it and it works decently (takes a lot of control tho u have to be good at sax overtones)

      I did some reseeding in a portion of my backyard and had the sprinkler set up. I had an old hose that I no longer used...figured what the heck!

    I have an idea. If you have a trombone that you don't really care about, you should take off the outer slide and duck tape a piece of garden hose to the ends of the inner slide.

    What about a "French Trumpet" or "Frumpet" for short. The hose coil is very similar to a traditional French Horn.

    How is the pitch of the instrument affected by the hose? I would've thought that more tubing would make the instrument lower, but it almost sounds higher to me?
