  • We went for a food tour in Agartala to with our fellow food friend Sivangi who is teacher by profession.
    In the heart of Agartala lies Swapna Fast Food Center, an old eatery cherished by locals. It is here that we first encountered two quintessential street food delights: Bangui and Pork/Chicken Bhorta. As we entered this unassuming establishment, the unfamiliar yet tantalizing aroma of their signature dishes immediately sparked our curiosity.
    Bhorta, typically known as a mashed dish from Bengal, took on a unique and refreshing form here. It was presented as a healthy salad-like dish made by combining tender chunks of boiled pork or chicken with a vibrant mix of coriander leaves, roasted chilies, ginger, onions, and just a dash of salt. It could be paired with either roti or bangui, the latter being a local specialty.
    Bangui, a traditional sticky rice dish unique to Tripura, stood out as something truly special. Made with fragrant native rice, ginger, and finely chopped carrots, it is steamed inside lairu leaf cones. The subtle earthiness of the lairu leaves, combined with the warm aroma of ginger and the sweetness of the rice, made it a perfect pairing with the zesty chicken bhorta that was served alongside.
    As we took a bite of the pork bhorta wrapped in the thin, soft roti, the flavors harmonized beautifully. The pork was tender and seasoned just right, with the roasted chilies and ginger adding an enjoyable level of heat. Despite its simplicity, the dish was packed with flavor, showcasing the beauty of minimalism in street food.
    We then explored more of Agartala’s street food offerings, stopping at various iconic eateries, each known for its own specialty. At Haaji, we sampled bamboo chicken, a flavorful dish where chicken is cooked inside bamboo over a fire, infusing the meat with a delicate, earthy taste.
    Our sweet cravings took us to Bholagiri Mithai Shop, where we indulged in kheertua, a luscious dessert made of cottage cheese soaked in rich condensed milk, and nolen gurer rosogolla, a winter-special Bengali sweet known for its deep, caramel-like flavor.
    The day continued with a stop at Ranjit Pitha Cart, where we tried some home-style bhapa pitha, soft steamed rice cakes, along with the rich and crispy malpua and the delicately sweet patishapta, a stuffed rice flour crepe.
    At Laxmi Bakery, we savored chicken chop, a deep-fried pastry stuffed with a spicy chicken filling, before heading to Giridhari Mistanna Bhandar for fried sondesh, a decadent treat of lightly fried cottage cheese balls coated in khoya.
    Next at The Chicken Corner introduced us to prawn fry, crunchy and golden from its breadcrumb coating, and the distinctively flavored gondhoraj chicken pakora, prepared with the zest of the aromatic gondhoraj lime.
    Our penultimate stop was Food Hut. It is a small non veg stall run by a couple. Here we had a tasty duck curry.
    The final stop was Rahul Fast Food, where we enjoyed their famous haleem, a flavorful, slow-cooked meat and lentil stew with egg cake. Both the dishes were just amazing. Watch till the end for all drooling details.

    She clearly explained what it is called in Kokborok and what it is called in Bengali. When someone doesn't know your language, they will refer to any food item or object in their own language, the one they are most comfortable with. An English or British person would not go to a shop in Tripura asking for "murgir dim" or "tohan toktoi." They would obviously say, "Give me an egg." Grow up, stop hating, and start loving. There's so much hatred these days. Manipur is in chaos. People don't seem to appreciate peace anymore. During the height of the Manipur conflict, Tripura was cited as an ideal state. Hatred and war won't bring development. Politicians will exploit the situation, creating division and ruling over us. Love each other, stop the hatred, and be united. Ask your local leaders about the potholes on your road or issues like power cuts and lack of running water. I know I'll receive a lot of criticism from educated people for what I've said, but hatred won't change anything. Awareness can be spread without hatred too.

    Just wanted to let you know what you are calling it as 'pork bharta' is actually called wahan mosdeng. We tripuris don't have any dish which is known as bharta. Bharta is a Bengali word. Wahan means pork and mosdeng means a dish which is made by crushing the chillies. A humble request to you that if you are covering any food make sure you know it's proper name. We don't call it bhorta or bharta. For a very long time it was made and eaten only by tiprasas. Wahan mosdeng is an authentic tripuri food which eaten on daily basis with rice and is also served with sticky rice (wrapped inside a leaf known as 'lairu') known as 'bangwi'. Since Bengalis and tripuris reside together even they started consuming it. And they started calling it as bharta/bhorta. Please stop calling it as bharta because by doing so you are promoting cultural appropriation.

    • @BTSBLACKPINK463
      @BTSBLACKPINK463 4 месяца назад +50

      Who are Bengalis to name a traditional dish or change the name of a traditional dish! All the shops in bhagaban thakur chowmuhani (owned by indigenous people) themselves call it vorta and it is clearly written Ruti vorta paoya jay. They have introduced this as bhorta to the Bengali people. It's their fault they shouldn't have done that. If they called it mosedeng years back it would have been known as mosedeng only.

    • @Khumjar24
      @Khumjar24 4 месяца назад +27

      @@BTSBLACKPINK463 I never claimed that Bengalis have changed it's name. I have clearly mentioned that they call it as so and so. Your claimed of us introducing it to 'Bengalis(as you have mentioned) mosdeng as bhorta is also not true. There have been many instances when people have confused names with our explanation because of our language barrier. For example it might have happened that they wanted to know the recipe and why is what called so and so. So maybe the people have explained the meaning of mosdeng and Bengalis have food like aloo bharta they thought that since mosdeng is made in a similar way like aloo bharta the start calling it as pork bharta.

      @@Khumjar24 Don't be too agitated before watching the whole video; otherwise, you will make yourself a laughing stock. Just watch at 7:00 where she clearly mentions what it is actually called in Kokborok and what the Bengali name of this dish is.
      Just as an English speaker would call the Bengali dish 'Macher Jhol' 'Fish Curry' in English and not 'Macher Jhol,' a native Bengali speaker would call 'Wahan Mosdeng' 'Sukor Bharta.' It's all about being comfortable in one's language, and you cannot dictate to others what they should call any dish in their own mother tongue. If she had not mentioned the traditional Tripuri name of the dish, then it would have been a problem, but she did mention it at 7:00 in the video.
      So don't make yourself a laughing stock here.

    Oh please just please don't try to distort the name of the Tripuri dishes, It's Wahan Mosdeng (Pork mosdeng) or Tohan Mosdeng (Chiken mosdeng). Term Mosdeng the name of the dish is made out of two Tripuri words Moso (Chili) & Deng (To smash). Not Bhorta and all it's too much. And also that girl who saying Awang Bangwi is made with Bini Tini rice it's totally wrong, it's Mami mairum or Guriya mairum, a particular variety of Tripuri sticky rice. Literally seeing it, it extremely got into my nervous just can't explain🙂
    If you can't promote it in it's true authentic way with it's true proper terms, why even try to promote. It's misleading very much misleading, just can't take it.

    As indigenous peopls are being deprived from their own land.....
    99% Bengalis are from Bangladesh

    I may have a bias for Tripura, but DFW - the food and culture of the Bengalis in Tripura is perhaps the richest in the eastern region - just like Lahore and West Punjab retained the best on partition in comparison to East Punjab, the rich culture of Bangladesh migrated to Tripura during partition on this side of the border. DFW, you appeared to relish the Peda, Egg Bun Cake, Mangsho, Haleem. Didnt spot you try the rosogulla and sandesh, Ilish, Gopal Misthan Bhandar for mithai and misthi dahi, or the ghee in Tripura which is arguably the best in the country. The patty at Sudipto bakery is to die-for. You should have stayed in the Forest Rest House in North Tripura, Ambassa, Teliamura, Sonamura, Sabroom to get the best Bengali food. A big thank you for this series on my favourite state. Come again!
