Actually recently cried listening to this song (which is a rare thing for me because I'm kinda unemotional) because 1)my closest friend may be moving away, which really sucks; she's like the best of people, and 2)Steven Wilson is a genius.
Curious the fact that this is such a heavy emotional song and Steven got the inspiration through a random electronic song/album! I really thought that there was something more about it!
Boards of Canada? That's a good electronic band. :) I thought the main electronic rhythm sounded like Recoil or Portishead, but I have to agree with Steven.
Boards of Canada (specifically "The Campfire Headphase") does the strangest thing to me. They make me feel nostalgic, but not because I listened to them as a kid. It's really hard to explain but their music just has a tendency to dig up old memories out of nowhere, so I can really see where Steven is coming from.
So no matter what happens to and and around the water, it'll never change or affect it. Whereas the girl in the story was damaged by what happened to her, and although she tries to move on from it it will always be a part of her. Similarly, the girl narrating is forever changed by her foster sister
Hand Cannot Erase is a freking Masterpiece, but please spare a thought about the young lady this ALBUM is based on,for those who dont .Wikipedia search hand cannot ... and look for a name ending in Vincent, and be prepared to be horrified,if you have a soul. Amen.
This is by far the best song ever made to catch the feel of lost happiness and memories from days gone by..

Same. Absolute tear-jerker...and I tend not to cry. Wow.
Steven's such an articulate and brilliant guy. Love all his music, Hand Cannot Erase is a masterpiece. Would love to see him live one day
amazing the way he explains the song was exactly the way i felt about it first time i heard it

Yes, that suprised me to
The music he provides, may it be Porcupine Tree or his solo work is just such an enrichment. He never fails to hit the feels.
We speak to Steven Wilson about the inspiration and stories behind his incredible track 'Perfect Life' from Hand Cannot Erase.
Tomorrow's Harvest = Masterpiece. Steven Wilson = Genius.

Agree. Sounds like a collaboration between Wilson and Wilder (Recoil).
PS: Alan Wilder - the most underrated musical genius!!!

Steven wilson... Ok pretentious.... but still hugely talented... 😊
I'm disappointed. His explanation is so banal.
