Thank you! I live in Birmingham, Alabama & just purchased a beautiful 06' SL55 in February of this year. I noticed the slight rattling on the passenger side & the roof's rubber seal started to open up at the joint above the main passenger window just as summer started to heat things up. Your insight made the process effortless & all's new again. As a newfound fan of the R230's, I can't thank you enough for help!
An idea for testing the spacing of the adjustment bolt? See if a piece of paper will fit between the contact points. That will give an indication of the amount of adjustment required.
@@GrooveOn i suggest you check the other adjustment if you still have any creaking. You can check the creaking as well by applying some pressure outside the car where the roof meets the rear pillar and keep an eye out for any movement. The adjustment you didnt mention is on each side, on the outer side of the one you adjusted, just inside the body panel of the rear pilar. You will see(with the pillar vertically) 2 black rubber”stops” like the ones you show in the video. Adjust the Top one! Mark a line if you want the try to unscrew it turn by turn. The bottom one, i think is not really adjustable, or in my case it is was not easy to turn so I decided not to mess with that. Please keep in mind that any adjustments done may affect something else, so do this at your own risk.
Thanks for that, very helpful. Is there a time limit with the roof half open and the engine on before it closes itself? I heard 7 mins mentioned in another video but wasn't sure.
Any idea of maybe adjusting the movement of the boot? Mine when it comes back towards the car to its normal position, it touches the rear tail light on one side and makes a horrible noise
@@GrooveOn no i will have to try that, but my hinges i changed some time ago, so they should be good. Although thinking of it, the issue probably started around the time i changed the hinges that hold the boot up when you open it normally, so that could have had something to do with it.
I was wondering if you have to adjust both screws on both sides for symmetry or not? My car creaks on the passenger side, I noticed that someone (prob previous owner) had adjusted the passenger side as the screw thread is more visible from the other side, however the driver's side isn't showing at all.
@@ReDandDarkFireno, it all depends on the what side is needing adjustment, one side may be totally fine, as there are many factors that could cause difference during the build
The screw at the back in video wont adjust the gap on the passenger side at windshield unfortunately, to do this you remove the roof panel and there is an adjustment nut underneath. Or you can do what I did and glue a small 1mm thin piece of rubber to the existing rubber, then use some vasiline to help seal. Cleaning and lubricate all your rubber joints too.
I can’t find this gizmo on my 2014 sl550. There is a thunking kind of heavy rattle coming from just behind the passenger seat. Drop the passenger window (barely) and the thunking noise stops. Any ideas anyone? Car has 21000 miles and came with the noise when I purchased it at the beginning of the year.
There is an adjustment stop on the rear window, if you remove the upper side panel you may be able to access it and see whats going on. This video shows the panel ruclips.net/video/HS4lis_zJrg/видео.html
Well I went to hiro coilovers, and they work great I did not drive it in the comfort mode I drove it in the sport mode not ABC mode. Search coilover conversions on RUclips for the r230

Thanks for sharing! And following!
Very helpful video. Thank you for taking the trouble to film it. Sorted my SL roof. 👍
Brilliant i'm so glad it worked for you it's the whole point that I create these videos, there is a Mercedes playlist with more in my channel
Appreciate all your videos. Thanks. Great tip. i’ve always done the silicone thing.

Hi, yes a business card is great, adjust each side until you get the same friction grab between the two bolts👍
Another problem solved, brilliant 🎉
Really helpful video. From my experience there are 1 or 2 more adjustments you could do to eliminate the creaks
Hey thanks for the response, you are quite right there are some other adjustments too, what would you recommend?

Glad it helped
Great video!!! Thanks
Glad you liked it!
Really good video. I have noticed tonight that the fabric underneath the sunroof has come loose, do you know how to fix it?
i have a c200 2019 and i have something similar, like a rattle but is intermittent, will try lubing the rubber seals as a first go
hope it works !
What about just getting a replacement plastic rubber piece
@@JamesSalvatore the rattle wasnt affected by the rubber just the adjustable screw was needed

I have a SLK R172 with the same noise but no adjustment stops like this? any ideas

Have you tried raising the roof so that the boot is vertical then stopping to have a look at the bracket that supports it?

Which direction (up or down) on the screw is to “tighten” roof? I noticed a drip between the windshield and the roof on the passenger side
