I'm 74 and when I first heard this song on the radio about 1955 I considered it the first official Rock n Roll song. I loved it along with all the other Rock n Roll songs that came later. Elvis Presley just blew everyone away but there were many great singers to follow. 1964 brought the English invasion. Such great bands. The Beatles lead the way along with the Stones and the Dave Clark 5. Music has been a major part of my life.

Whenever my mom had visitors and they left her house she'd always say "See you later, alligator" by way of goodbye. She grew up in the golden years of rock 'n' roll and loved that music until the very end. When she suddenly passed away, we had her cremated, and when the urn with her ashes was carried out of the church, we had this song playing as a final goodbye to her. You're being missed a lot, mom, yet I am happy you're not around to face the wide-awake nightmare that life has become nowadays. Thank you for making me the person I am today. I have not said it enough when you were still here, but I love you.

She said I'm sorry pretty daddy, you know my love is just for you
Won't you say that you'll forgive me
And say your love for me is true
I said wait a minute 'gator, I know you mean it just for play
I said wait a minute 'gator, I know you mean it just for play
Don't you know you really hurt me
And this is what I have to say
See you later alligator, after 'while crocodile

Can't you see you're in my way now

I'm 72. I love the origin of common phrases and words. I am leaving McDonald's today and hear two small children bidding each other goodbye. "See you later alligator"
    "after a while crocodile!
I remember this was a common salutation in the 50s and we can thank Bill Haley and the comets
One of the posters here suggested that this might've been the very first rock 'n' roll record
He may very well be right but I remember when I was traveling in Australia I saw a movie about Johnny O'Keefe
And he achieved prominence about the same time as Bill Haley.
    Never heard of him?
Well he was a songwriter in addition to a performer and listen to his version of Shout.
I think it's even better than the Isley brothers version.
    He wrote the song
See if you can find it on RUclips

The Comets covered this Bobby Charles song and took it to the next level from swamp rock to rock and roll. The vocals and instruments make this a terrific dance classic. My father was a HS teacher in the 50s and he would chime it when leaving because his students crooned it daily. So I started singing it at 3 years old.
