The gadgets/weapons thing isnt that big a factor. The first episode of the anime is also fairly weird seeing how Yuna(Lilos replacement) was immediately able to fight on par with Stitch. There is also 2 series after the disney one. Stitch!(first anime) and then another one named Stitch and Ai.

And when she finally returns, she said she couldnt take care of stitch anymore, but it felt like she just doesnt want to. Stitch overheard the whole thing and ran crying. Mind you this is near the end of the show's run And they NEVER RESOLVE THIS
