- -Learning an Entire HEART Song by Ear! (in only 18 minutes) *my process
Here's a type of video I normally don't do but since I had to learn the song anyway for a gig, I thought I'd just record the process. :)

Learning by ear for me is a ton of trial and error. I’m by no means a great player but I know what sounds right and what doesn’t. Once you figure out the notes, get the timing down, and there ya go.
Mee too, but to be honest, there are some hints tips and tricks that might help a lot, for example knowing scales have made my process easier, also, very important thing, to know the style of the guitar player you want to emulate. :)
My favorite song on the album. Heart was my first concert & it was on that very tour.
Mike, this is incredible!! Thank you for showing this. I (and maybe others) would love to see more videos like this. It's great to be able to see how a PRO does things!!
For the 3rd chord of the “Tony Robbins part” I kept yelling “D shape!!!” at the screen 🤣
I like how the verse chords sound in 2nd position, a bit cleaner and crisper, rather than reaching up to the 7th fret. Whatever you choose I’m sure you’ll make it rock 🤘
Cheers from a northern Minnesotan!
Well yell louder next time. I couldn't hear ya. haha.
This is one of Heart's sleeper rock songs. Love it! It never charted, but an audience favorite. You did it great justice in 18 min! That double high riff you're hearing is hard b/c Nancy does the solo, then Howard sort of tops it off with the last half of the high riff, so for 1 guitar to pull it off, yeah it's a challenge...and the Rush reference...hell yeah.
Dude, this was a great video. I love to see the process. Great work 🤘🏻
Yes! Great, Mike! One of my favorite Heart songs!
Great video Mike! Really great to watch your process and insight into your methods of learning. This would make a great series imo. I'd love more of you learning a song you've never heard before. Great stuff! and don't forget, think about double D's while playing it ;) lol
Wow you picked that up pretty easily and quickly! I mainly play rhythm and just beginning to learn the scale patterns for playing lead. I really enjoy your lesson videos. 🤘
I really like this type of video blog. I like to see your processing it really does help you should get lots of hits off of this one thumbs up!
Thanks a lot! I was learning along too and it was an interesting little challenge, was confused about the triad too still nit sure, cheers. Heart is awesome, 80s feels good
Love your work 💯
Im new to singing and because i could only read tab and not a lot of sheet music, i need to learn how to transcribe from ear (and most songs i like don't even have the notes written anywhere) This was amazingly helpful, thank you
LOVE THIS ALREADY looks so fun :))
Well done man!🔥
Awesome. Very insightful. Thank you.
Great job!
Awesome watching your process and stunning to find out Tony Robins was part of Heart.😜
Love it. That's how I do it too.. I'll learn it by ear, best I can, then when I get stumped or want to see how the artist plays it, I look it up on RUclips. 👍
Great job 🤘
I really like your process, so it's not all smoke and mirrors after all!!!
Man’s learned the whole song in the time I’d take for me to learn the solo
Ah, learning songs by ear! FLASHBACK!! Hey, I have that exact Guitar School Magazine with the Ozzy guitarists! :)
Can't wait to see Shart in concert.
EHX makes a "Freeze" pedal that would allow you to sustain that D note in the 1st half of the solo, while continuing on to the 2nd half of the solo. Edit: certain BOSS multi-fx pedals and modelers also have this effect. For BOSS products, it's called "Sound Hold".
What kills me about the cover bands I've been in over the years is the whole, "Oh we don't do that part." Sometimes it is those little nuances really add to a song.
It was good of you to point out the timbre of the string. I find it an extremely important thing to notice when trying to get a solo to sound right. Especially when pinch harmonics are involved.
Your tone on this was killer.
Loved this song for years but only recently realized the opening/chorus riff is a lot like the Beat It riff. LOL
That track 'If Looks Could Kill' owns that whole album.....
Awesome playing, man, does your Heart tribute band have any videos on RUclips that I can check out?
Hell yeah! The Wolf is my favorite song from the self-titled album. You picked it up pretty quick. If you haven't listened to it, the live version from Portland is awesome, much better than the studio version IMO, specially the solo which is actually Nancy doing the main leads. "Wild Child" is on the Brigade album.

3:00 "Lotta E.D. going on there" 😂
Having a nighdentical tone definitely helps!
wonder if you could sneak some lines from other classic "wolf" songs, "hungry like the wolf"-duran duran, "wolf at the door"-radiohead, "bark at the moon"-ozzy, etc...
Lock Up The Wolves -Dio
Werewolves Of London -Warren Devon
Good song.
i don't know if this counts as learning by ear but i usually find a live video of the song or glance at a tab and then listen to it. basically i get a rough frame of reference for where on the neck it is and from there i can figure it out.
That Jackson looks killer dude, keep on rockin 🤘
I have a question ❓ please reply it can a guitarist who can not properly able to find lead on guitar can teach guitar to others but he his expert in sight reading...
How Can I Refuse is You Got Another Thing comin. Judas Priest
Do you have any videos of you and your heart cover band playing live
You're ripped as hell dude
If you’re stuck in a rut as a player, start working songs out by ear. It forces your hands into new shapes.
Heart.... Rocking Heaven Down is an overlooked gem!!! Do you play that??
We play that. Fun drop D action.
@@TheArtofGuitar awesome... Record it for a video broadcast I'd love to hear it. It's my favorite ❤️ tune.
That would take me about two weeks to learn that by ear and as long as the band could live with the solo being played at half speed, I'd be good. 🙂 Nicely done!
Sheart!
Don't make us change our name. haha

This is the “Heart of Guitar”. Some compare memorization to a muscle that works better the more work you give it. I would hate to see my memorization embodied as a muscle because there would be nothing to flex.
Feed the good wolf
i thought the tony robbins part sounded like that come sail away styx song
Does this sound like the Beat It riff to anyone else?

First?
Gave it a like. It was 69. (Pats self on back)
Not to sound hateful but why do u like Heart so much? Why dont u play tribute for a heavier band Heart isnt that heavy like Metallica is? And I dont mean to sound mean.
I'm more obsessed with Nancy Wilson but...;) I like Heart a ton, not my favorite band but I was asked to join years back and I liked the people in the band and it was a good challenge for guitar so I did it. I've been in a lot of heavy bands and loved it but I gotta tell you, there are a few insanely heavy Heart moments. Especially live.

@@TheArtofGuitar Thank you Mike for always getting back to me your literally the only youtuber that does and I appreciate your kindness. Also thats awesome Im glad that you are in a band Im thinking about making a poster or ad and posting it when i go to high school looking for ryhthm or lead guitar players. I really want to find teens my age or older to jam with. It sucks my parent dont listen to my riffs or solos I make up so I feel left out. Also I have been asking you but are you ever going to release your own songs like guitar songs?
I've got a few releases coming out soon but they're not strictly guitar songs. Should be fun though.
@@TheArtofGuitar Well i can't wait to see whatever it is!!! Hope it's really soon
